Pete Eccles Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Who's to say all of them are? Which goes to show how brittle your point is, who's to say anyone can or can't afford records, it was you that put all 20 year olds in the skint bracket
KevH Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 What 20 year old is going to be able to spend £300 - £400 regularly on records, and the daft £1-2k prices for popular stuff? The record price thing shuts them out of the ovo scene which in turn shuts them out of being 'taken seriously'. Best thing for the guys to do (as mentioned) is start afresh with their own version of it all and not worry about us lot. And genuinely good luck to them all. Hi Joel, cropped your post.Your question "What 20 year old etc".Isn't this where playing boots comes in.? The cost can be high for ovo.But playing boots is not taken seriously - unless you poo poo ovo. I went to an all nighter a few years back with friends, one who was dji'ng.He'd purchased a "big lad" recently and was going to drop it into his set.A tune that was quite different from what he was associated with at the time. So what do you think happened about 90 mins before he was due on.? That's right a young dj stuck on the inferior boot to a lukewarm floor. Thoughts.?
Corbett80 Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 So you think there is enough 20 year olds out there into northern soul who can afford to spend that money on records regularly in order to jock on the UK soul scene? Maybe you're right.

How do you suggest they go about DJing on the scene as it stands currently in terms of records? I'm not saying I have the answers but f*ck knows how you get these records if your're young and don't have huge funds available to you (and fair enough Pete maybe they aren't all skint but it's still an outrageous cost these days) ? How do you get booked if people are saying you have to have the records to mix it up with the established DJs? Edited April 17, 2014 by corbett80
Pete Eccles Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 So you think there is enough 20 year olds out there into northern soul who can afford to spend that money on records regularly in order to jock on the UK soul scene? Maybe you're right. I'm just saying when I was 20 I was doing the same job I do now and in relative terms I had more money to spend then than I do now, just a pity I wasn't collecting records then, If out of work, or up to the neck in debt then funding any hobby is difficult, regardless of age, 1

Corbett80 Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 (edited) I agree Pete, but I suppose i'm just trying to say I can understand the frustration of being into something and wanting to be part of it but having a huge monetary hurdle to go up against. It just seems like a catch 22 for younger people getting into it - sort of takes the fun out of something that is supposed to be fun. Edited April 17, 2014 by corbett80
Corbett80 Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Kev> You're right, and some are doing that it seems which is great. Certainly we're lucky down in here in London to have the younger people into it doing exactly that, same in Manchester etc. But that is a case of where they are through the playlists creating their own part of the scene. I guess it depends on where you are aiming to DJ and to whom perhaps? 1

It just seems like a catch 22 for younger people getting into it - sort of takes the fun out of something that is supposed to be fun. Where I work there are 20 year olds on exactly the same money as me, I can guarantee with very few exceptions they all have much more left over than me after outgoings, drive nicer cars, and enjoy nicer holidays, It all depends where on an individuals list of priorities they place original records, and what they are prepared to sacrifice in order to fund them, 1

Popular Post Peter99 Posted April 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 17, 2014 Hobby's cost money, the more serious the hobby the more cost involved. I would like to do certain hobbies - but I could never afford to. That is life. 4
Popular Post Quinvy Posted April 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 17, 2014 I think you are all missing the point.............when we were young we loved the music and just wanted to dance to it. The Dj's were a special breed that somehow had these incredible records. If the young'uns are so into the music, why the fook do they want to be Dj's? If I was 20 I would be dancing all night. That's what the scene needs to have a future, loads of young dancers, not loads of young Dj's playing boots of oldies. 16
Guest Bearsy Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 I wanted a Ferrari when I was 20 and I still want a Ferrari now but I'm no closer to owning one now as I was then. Some people earn enough to own a Ferrari some don't so buy what you can afford and if you want that Ferrari then get a job that pays enough or save like mad as nothing is given to you in this life for free unless of course your born into money

Bazza Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 (edited) My thoughts are this, the scene as we know it will die ,it already is , OVO is important to me it adds to the pleasure of listening / dancing to it, I understand the time and effort that has gone in to acquiring it but I am old school ,Many folk don't give a toss if its proper or not,if a youngster comes in and sez to them self " I love this stuff " its the Music they love ,not the baggage and politics that come with it and why should they ,that time has gone ,encourage them and then let them sort there own scene, with out our old fashioned idea's Bazza Edited April 17, 2014 by Bazza 1
Tolbert Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 I wish I had half the amount of top quality 45's some of the younger generation have in their playbox today . People like Henning ,Callum ,James Pogson ,Alfie and Davide to name only a fraction ,are not just buying ,owning and playing great records ,but are very passionate and knowledgeable individuals who can give most old DJ's the run around behind a set of decks . It would be interessting to see a playlist from J. Pogson from ...let's say...3 years ago.

Popular Post Paulb Posted April 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 17, 2014 Jordan, no disrespect mate but that kind of playlist is about as old hat as you can possibly get. Ditch copying the northern soul playlists from average clubs in the 70's and open your ears. Do the young collectors out there aspire to be djing to their Dad's mates down the local conservative club, or do they want to be playing to people their own age in a decent club? I think of lot of the alleged young soul dj's fancy the con club. 4

I hate seeing it done badly. Why follow the crowd? if you collect oldies then great - but at least play with a bit of imagination. Absolutely no point copying anyone. Popular Post TommieOnTheSpot Posted April 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 17, 2014 (edited) Right, as a DJ aged only 16… I think pure and simply DJ needs to have passion and a reputation for playing a crowd-pleasing set, as that’s what is about I think, pleasing the crowd. Regardless of what anybody says OVO is the only way to play and there are some great classic original records you can pick up for under £20: Spyder Turner - I Can’t Make It Anymore, Dells - Make Sure, Jean Wells - What Have I Got to Lose, Garnett Mimms - Prove It To Me… When I get booked for a set, I want to get sets because the promoter has booked me for what I will play and how I would try and work the floor and for me, not because I am 16... Leave them to it they will find their way and let's stop wrapping them up in bubble wrap and telling them what to do its their lives let them crack on and find their own way.
