Mal C Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 (edited) notice the Aussie Sandy Wynns - The Touch of Penis, John Manship has up in his auction, in the wrong sleeve... If I was paying £131 and counting I'd want that to be correct, thats an Aussie sleeve but was not used post 1963... So if your reading this, it should be a Red stripped sleeve, yep 'Looks gorgeous' as it says in the blurb, but its not as it looked when it was issued... small matter, but makes a difference... Guest turntableterra Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 not really Frankie, but I know where you are coming from, but there are a few of like minded record collectors who like the original sleeve too as it adds to the history of the record, I just managed an upgrade to mint minus aussie verve clara ward and in its sleeve too.. but try an find a tony drake in a sleeve. on the subject of sleeves, picture sleeves are hard such as the Jackie day, so much so that some people are resulting to scanning them and using these until they get an original as I have seen. if memory serves john sold one of these in his dropdown a couple of years ago. but you cant be fooled as they are easily distinguishable due to the quality. what would you reckon was the hardest aussie mal. I have a theres that beat that lists them you can have it for 20 pence plus postage

He hasn't got that weird New Zealand copy of Fife Piper that I've got though, on the old early 60's purple Pye label.

I have a theres that beat that lists them you can have it for 20 pence plus postage Did you pick the Clara ward up recently? there was one for sale but the bidding was very silly for it.... rare ones, Only ever seen seen one copy of Donald Jenkins on W&S, Frank in Melbourne has that, and the scans on Dave Flynn's Web site But the rarest 'Northern' Aussie might well be Nolan Porter on Pink Probe, a friend Craig in Sydney found 3 copies well over a fifteen years ago at a Big TV channel sale I think, big sell of, of some sort in Adelaide, there are some on here that were there that day, so they might put the location and date correct, my memory isnt what it was.... anyhow he kept two and sold one to Frank in Melbourne, George in Sydney is said to have a copy also. Tony Drake is very rare, and some of the Garland Green 45's on MCA, 'Jealous kinda Fella' being the most common, then the LP, then I'm told there are two other releases, I'd have to check my records for the titles, but very likely all culled from the LP... Finally the RCA stable always are very hard, 'Lights Out' by the Dynamics came up on eBay years back, never heard of another, pic cover as well... always found the RCA stuff hard to get hold of... oh and festival White Demo's, which do turn up, but you never see them for the good titles, Ive got about ten or so good ones in varying conditions.. any more out there, what do folks think..>? Mal C Posted April 15, 2014 Author Posted April 15, 2014 (edited) He's got all the guides has Mal, he knows more about Oz 45's than anyone I know. He hasn't got that weird New Zealand copy of Fife Piper that I've got though, on the old early 60's purple Pye label. I Know he deals with a guy in Sydney Pete who has a shop there at the back of Central, Surrey Hills area, very near to where I used to work, same chap who was the source of the Jamaican Sam Dees / Fragile handle with care 45's that swamped the world some years back.... I met him once, thought he was an arrogant sod, so I asked if they were boots, which seemed to piss him off no end... safe to say we didn't like each other... And I know that George and Frank sold shed loads of Aussie 45's into the UK throughout the 8ts/9ts and beyond... makes sense that John Manship was likely a recipient of a whole lot of those... there are various hordes of 45's Ive heard of that came out of allot of strange locations, one guy I visited in Victoria I spent a very hot and sweaty day with in blistering heat, surprised they didn't all bend in my hands, it was a nightmare, went through thousands upon thousands of 45's, really narked of Liza, and found one garland green track, and then he tells me he had been cleaned out of soul stuff years before... God Damn!! Why didnt you say Dude!! and that was the story at allot of places throughout NSW, and other States we traveled trough.. Tamworth was good in NSW, its the country and western music Capitol in Oz, found loads of stuff in 2nd had stores on the fringes of the place, nothing in the center what so ever.. and I actually found some records in a junk shop in a place called Casino, which is on the inside of the Great Dividing range, farming town so how they got there I dont know.... Be honest, Parramatta record Fair nr Sydney was one the best places for me..Miss Goldie took me there initially in 2004, I went pretty regularly there after.. I said no to loads of things there, Shorty Long on TM, Don't mess with the Wkd,, bloody fool... I'm happy to learn, and if your selling, I'm always interested, but at the right price... purist Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I've not had too many, but generally it seems that the vinyl on Aussie releases stands up well. One Aussie I'd LOVE to own is the Larry Santos on Festival, anybody got one they'd part with ? 1

Benji Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Now that this thread moved all the way from London's 100 Club to down under, one question: How many soul 45's were issued in Australia in the 1960's?
Quinvy Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 He may have changed since I last won a record on Manship's auction, but he never used to give you the company sleeve. They were just window dressing.
Mal C Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) Now that this thread moved all the way from London's 100 Club to down under, one question: How many soul 45's were issued in Australia in the 1960's? loads Benji, I have W&G and Festival Listings (61-69) and Ive highlighted the releases of interest for my reference, but Ive never counted them up.. It seems to me that the stuff between 61-69 is very well documented, but the 7ts and 8ts seem less so, and Ive come across allot of good releases from those decades, but again Ive never counted them up.. Dunnno, how long is a piece of string? £GRAD for the 100 club singles.. Phuttwwwttt... easier to get off your arse and go up there once a year isn't it...thats allot of money.. sorry Dave I'm fueling the Aussie debate I know, but its more interesting quite simply.. Malcolm Edited April 16, 2014 by Mal C 1
Dave Rimmer Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Did any of the 100 Club singles get released in Australia then ? 1
Pete S Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 To someone interested in records this is infinitely more interesting than the 100 Club Singles thread, we've all seen these but there's still loads of Aussie 45's which are way off the radar. And as Pikeys Dog says on that thread, who cares what they go for?
Mal C Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) OK, to widen the appeal of the thread, here's some nice Aussie Motown for you, I only collect demo's, ones with no bullet sticker showing, sticker would be on the other side.. Regards, Malcolm Edited April 16, 2014 by Mal C 1
Pete S Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Did I dream it or is their a Aussie Verve "Living A Lie"?

Winsford Soul Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Mal.. Had a Australian Solomon King. This beautiful day Columbia demo and a Marcia Hines. You gotta let go. Wizard 7" until recently. Wish I had kept them. Bought them of Phil Arnold when he returned from Australia about 10 years ago. Steve 1

Guest turntableterra Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 another one the hardest has to be seven day fool or another that I wont say because its the other side of a tune they play on country programs and I want it first. frank is the top man on aussie stuff and a great guy too. I thought the clara went cheap at 300. ive only seen 3 and ive got 2 of them. things like brian hyland and also a lot of cover versions like nick knack paddy wack are around too.

Know what you mean on cover versions, there are hundreds, Pete Smith said he had a CD of loads of them, be good to see the track listing on that, personally I gave up collecting them because the quality got so bad, thought Little Pattie - Messin up a good thing was good, I did pick that up recently, and saw an Aussie Don Charles - The Drifter go on evil bay week or so ago, ok version but nothing tops Ray does it... so whats this 'Other'? you cant allude to something without giving us more of a clue? so its the flip of a country 45, what group of labels does it come from? Mal Edited April 18, 2014 by Mal C
Guest turntableterra Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 (edited) ua, with a cover version on rca. and I only heard it last year. I don't have may oz but I have to say the quality is great, seven day fool on coronet Edited April 18, 2014 by turntableterra
KevH Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Saw a nice Carolyn Franklin - "Reality" on black RCA ,solid centre, the other day.
Ernie Andrews Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Ive got a magazine that Barry Waddington sent me with loads of aussie labels in it. & Of course One of my best finds was that aussie lot in Dublin 40 records for 40 euros and i probably missed a few.Sold most of them!
Triode Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Not forgetting Ozzie released LP's ie Casablanca Sampler that included Gloria Scott's "Case of too much love making" (as well as the ultra rare Oz 7") Also the Van McCoy SSS International " Van McCoy & Friends". Clyde McPhatter "Welcome Home" (MCA ?) I also have the Metros "Since I found my baby" on Oz RCA Promo that references the LP "Sweetest One" so maybe that exists to? Triode
Mal C Posted April 23, 2014 Author Posted April 23, 2014 I have the Casablanca LP, still after the 7", seem to remember somebody talking about Clyde McPhatter LP ages ago, Ive never seen one, But the allot of Aussie LP's are quite surprising, allot have the Aussie vinyl with the USA sleeve just with a large sticker the size of the cover on the back, simply to state "Blah blah records, Australia'... Malcolm
Pete S Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 This is a link to a blog site, it's mainly Rock stuff, on the left hand side half way down are links to loads of Australian sites including many discographies and histories etc https://rockonvinyl.blogspot.co.uk/

Kris Holmes Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 picked up this label variation i hadn't seen before the other week NZ press 2
Pete S Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I saw it and can't remember seeing Lynne Randell - "That's what love is made of" the Smokey Robinson track on the list, but I have a copy on Oz CBS Sorry probably didn't see it - didn't include every cover version.
Missgoldie Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 But the rarest 'Northern' Aussie might well be Nolan Porter on Pink Probe, a friend Craig in Sydney found 3 copies well over a fifteen years ago at a Big TV channel sale I think, big sell of, of some sort in Adelaide, there are some on here that were there that day, so they might put the location and date correct, my memory isnt what it was.... anyhow he kept two and sold one to Frank in Melbourne, George in Sydney is said to have a copy also. Craig picked the Nolan Porter's up in Canberra the 2nd year they did a fair selling off all non Australian artists from the National archives. There was multiples of loads of great stuff.
Ernie Andrews Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 That Magazine I was talking about was "Theres that beat Issue 11" 18 pages of Aussie releases written by Dave Moore & Nigel Loveless
