Guest Dave Ward Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I was given a copy of Dave Nowell's book, Soul Survivors (@1996), when published. I skipped reading chapter #6 in which RW lists his top 50 Casino discoveries. Until last night, (couldn't sleep again), so I read through it, and in at No.46. was this, I vaguely remember dancing to it, but not as a RW sound. Any more info ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=jze8Jy2gEsA
Chris Turnbull Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Just bought this the other week after the 'Northern Noise' thread on here where it was listed in an RW article about top Wigan sounds - assumed it was him that had played it New to me but well known generally? Great tune, I was delighted to find a good clean copy for £20. Sounds great on the old cans

Barry Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 RW play whilst I was there. The LP is bad ass if you like a smorgasbord of Blues Funk Folk and general weirdness.
Winsford Soul Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Used to sit this one out and let the stomper/shuffler type dancers have the floor. Steve

Guest Matt Male Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 DEFO RUSS..us flying dutchman and also came out on uk philips.....still a great oldie imo Agreed mate, didn't know it was a Winstanley play, but definitely Wigan. Had a bit of reactivation last year, but to be honest it's never been forgotten.
Soul Shrews Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Yes Russ spin from around 78/79 I think Love it myself had a mint UK copy from that nice Mr Rez for not a lot of dosh a couple of years back. Leon is of course a jazz legend Cheers Paul

Guest Dave Ward Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Thanks for your input, everyone. still can't get Russ discovering this, or taking 5 years to break it. I love it, particularly the Dave Mitchell 'The Trip' saxophone break. RW has moved up in my estimation ( a bit ) .
NEV Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I'll be honest and admit that I'm not a big fan of Russ's additions to the " northern soul " scene but credit where credit is due.. I gotta refer to The famous black and white photo of him, Kev & Richard, probably taken at Wigan in the 70's? Russ holding a copy of Gloria Barnes lp.. shaaamaaaziiing ! 1

Wiganer1 Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I still say Russ deserves far more credit than the stick he gets.... 1
Geeselad Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 tune, never heard it before, would seriously like to hear the lp russ deserves credit for pushing the boundaries of the sound at least.
Guest Dave Ward Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Good job that Russ was just the warm up DJ!!!! I'd agree, but I liked that, 1 crap record, 2 average crowd pleasers, then a good one, I'd sit on the stage people watching, have a bop about, no pressure, Russ usually had a full floor. But for me it was waiting for RS, who could also be a bit conservative up until 3:00 am, M's would open and that was a signal to kick on, in the main room. I always liked John Vincent's sets later on in the night as well. RW's last spot in the morning was always appalling.
Wiganer1 Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 of all the tapes i got the best atmosphere is on russ spots ,,perhaps he was a dancers fave and not a collector...
Guest MrC Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 of all the tapes i got the best atmosphere is on russ spots ,,perhaps he was a dancers fave and not a collector... Not how I remember it.
Pete S Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 of all the tapes i got the best atmosphere is on russ spots ,,perhaps he was a dancers fave and not a collector... That's because everyone was coming up when Russ was on and wanted to get the gear working, hence loads of people on the floor early 1
Guest Dave Ward Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 That's because everyone was coming up when Russ was on and wanted to get the gear working, hence loads of people on the floor early That's right, also, the oldies room M's didn't open until after Russ's opening spot which meant 500 people disappeared from the main room until M's closed at 7:00 am, just in time for Russ's last set.
