Guest in town Mikey Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 To someone who has never heard Northern Soul, to capture the whole essence of the scene. Which one would you choose? After reading the posts on the blue eye soul thread, I thought this might be slightly less controvercial topic. Artists of all genders and colours are welcome. Having said that; I do agree; the Paul Anka track is the epitome of Northern (soul, or otherwise). I don't think that can be doubted. Or can it? link For me, it would be Sandi Sheldon - You're gonna make me love you. Its a good old stomper, its on a label synonymous (Spelling?) with the scene, and I just cant sit down and listen to this track. I absolutely HAVE to dance.

Guest Stuart T Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Not Ree Flores?? I'll get my coat link If you'd asked the same question about funk Mikey....
Guest James Trouble Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 As stuart said, we're talking northern here, not funk.
Supercorsa Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Herbert Hunter - I Was Born To Love You Anyone wanna sell me an original copy at boot price? No harm in asking!
Guest Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 (edited) Its got to be Frankie Beverley and the Butlers If thats what you wanted. Whether you like oldies, crossover, funk or another type of "northern" this conveys the essential sound that hooked us all. IMO Edited October 29, 2004 by Guest

Emjaygee Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 I'm torn between L Allen - Can't We Talk It Over for the intro that is instantly recognisable and drags me to the floor when ever i hear it and the Dells Make Sure s it's for me the best group harmony allround feeling of soulfullness at an available price to anyone etc etc.

Guest Awake 502 Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Clyde McPhatter / Please give me one more chance...
Craig W Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 On a purely played out oldies point of view it has to be The Snake , I hate it now but it must of alerted more people to Northern soul than any other. You have to start somewhere.Give this some credit. On the other hand I reckon that if anyone heard Little Anthony & The Imperials singing Better Use Your Head played on any radio station and not Knowing much about soul music, it would make you think bloody hell thats good. Ive heard it a thousand times now but if it was played on the Jonathon Ross show tomorrow on radio 2 for example it would still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Guest Johnny One Trout Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 Sooooooo many to choose from Good call on the Johnny Wyatt btw Blade I suppose if it's someone who has never heard Northern it has to an instant sort of record and as much as i'd put in Dena Barmes or Gwen Owens there is something of the aquired taste about those as there is with so much of the music that we all love to the point of distraction i think my choice given that some i may have chosen have gone would The Group ft Cecil Washington - I don't like to loose - Profonics Remember the first time you heard that at the Casino !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Billy Freemantle Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 Backstreet - Edwin Starr. It has that ... well backstreet vibe. Either that or The Right Track . Another wrongside of the tracks record. Still do it for me after 35 and more years.
