Speedlimit Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 It's official there really is two soul scenes , there's the money making clown shows where you can by anything from casino coasters to frank Wilson kitchen bins playing your top 500 ,full of people who enjoy all of that and that's their choice.then there's the true underground scene where the patrons crave new sounds be they 60's 70's funky soul this scene is mainly attended by those of use who championed the cause through the dark days of the 80'swhich do you choose 3
Winsford Soul Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Me I walk the line. Dipping my toes into what night I fancy. Steve who also championed the cause through the 80s, 90s, 2000,s and still doing so now in the whatever you call these days. 1
Popular Post Pete Eccles Posted March 20, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 20, 2014 From your descriptions I'm not overly enamoured with either scene, maybe there's a 3rd, 4th or 5th scene? Or maybe I don't wanna be in a scene? 4
Wiganer1 Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 im on the allniter scene,,dont do many soul nights,,just into good uptempo northern soul dance music... 1
Guest Paul Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 There has always been several soul scenes and factions of scenes and even more people who don't associate much with any particular scene but who take the music seriously and get a lot of pleasure from it. I think the only true "underground" movement in this country ended when the Tories closed the coal mines. And coal miners didn't go underground to support any particular cause, they did it to make a living. But variety is the spice of life.
Popular Post Mark Bicknell Posted March 20, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 20, 2014 Don't really feel a part of any of it anymore, been away too long really and I was full on with it through the 80's and 90's, still adore the ethos of the music that will never change but as a scene it's far too diluted and fragmented now and some aspects and areas of it are so far removed to the scene I was once part of it's something I simply don't recognise or need to be part of. 13
Popular Post TOAD Posted March 20, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 20, 2014 It's the dumbing down that's irritating me.every man and his dog is into it then you get stupid remarks by the likes of Robert elms and pathetic media show's its embarrassing to be associated with it 8
Popular Post Daz Posted March 20, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 20, 2014 There are about six different scenes here in the North East alone! For me it's just about the music - that is SOUL ! 9
Quinvy Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 This is just another oldies versus newies thread under a different guise. Trouble is there are no newies anymore. So there are golden oldies and post Wigan oldies. The so called underground scene are playing post Wigan oldies mixed with stuff that never made it and Funk. I love the golden oldies and the post Wigan oldies, but I want to hear something new. But not Funk. 1
Guest BAKUNIN Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Like me the whole thing is dated...you would have to go a long way now to find a small 60s type club playing club, uptempo, mid tempo, class sounds now....cannot get into this funk thing.....most of that stuff I used to hear on those crappy cassette tapes that used to surface every now and again.Scene has lost its originality bigtime imho...in fact just dont get the same buzz anymore..but its probably just a natural age progression thing...isnt it?
Popular Post Steve G Posted March 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 21, 2014 it is completely factionalized......50 shades of northern....but as Krissii said (quite fairly) on another thread, for a lot of people (civilians) it is just about an occasional night out with mates and reliving something familiar from their past. Not everyone is hardcore and as passionate as us. 5
Popular Post Winnie :-) Posted March 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 21, 2014 There's one scene but thousands of people desperate to define it to their own personal agenda. I choose what I enjoy every time, and suggest we all do the same :-) 13
Dave Pinch Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 i actually believe theres several in attendance that dont have a past...just a present..of course most have been on holiday for 30 years but will try and convince you otherwise.....me i`d go for the 2nd of speedlimits comments but with a bit less of the funk.. the europeans influence....imo....dont mind a handbaggers do once or twice a year tho
Guest Backdrop Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Its not really that difficult , because it is or should be about personal taste of course there is nothing wrong with "trying out" different venues . but surely without influence from what anybody else says .. you know if its your thing or not. I posted this on another thread it used to be so much easier; Merchandise...Dont like......Dont buy Music ..............Dont like.....Dont Dance Venue.............Dont like......Dont go again IMO it really is that simpel btw ..going to an oldies all nighter in Nottigham at the weekend ... cos thats what ilove .. Hope every body as great weekend this weekend ..which ever venue they choose
Popular Post KevH Posted March 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 21, 2014 First rule of the underground scene - don't mention the underground scene. 7
Gary Brown Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 you would have to go a long way now to find a small 60s type club playing club, uptempo, mid tempo, class sounds now.... Here's four - Empty Bottles, That Driving Beat, Black Bee Soul Club and Monkey Jump. All small 'real deal' clubs playing rare and underplayed dancefloor Soul on OVO. 2
KevH Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Cue people name dropping there clubs ;) Well if the gauntlet's down............

Popular Post Kev Cane Posted March 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 21, 2014 I'm in the underground scene, It's a bit elite 'cause I'm the only one in it, Music's great, but the attendance at my chosen venue (bedroom) is crap. Just one regular punter (me) Much politics flying around ? people only interested in records when certain people play them ? and on and on and on, I like your scene Incognito Kev 4
Soulstu Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Hmmm.. some of you guys are a tad bitter. It's not worth it. Though I hate the nostalgia crap and all the marketing, I will not be made to feel ashamed or embarrassed about still loving all of the fantastic records that got me into it in the first place. I'm no oldies dinosaur - I've got into more 'new' sounds in the last 6 months than ever in my life, they are constantly on my playlist. Whether there's a 'real' scene and a 'divvy' scene I don't care to be honest. It's OK to take the best out of the whole thing. If I was a youngster reading this thread I'd probably think twice about being a soul fan. We seem to hate ourselves and what we have become. Just go and put a record on. 3
Godzilla Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 There are about six different scenes here in the North East alone! I think that's an underestimate. Here in Scarborough (population 100,000) even discounting the two scooterist clubs that have their own events, there are at least five scenes. Three of them managed to have their nights on the same date in February!

Good post but not sure about the 'think twice' comment, is being a 'soul fan' a decision? I can't help liking what I like, I didn't decide to like soul, maybe I'm reading it wrong, 2
Kev Cane Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 F*ck off you f*ckin tourist, Don't come around my venue with ya tacky bric a brac. I'm changing it to be even more underground, I'm closing the venue, opening another and not even telling me where I'm going
Winnie :-) Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Reading this thread it's as though people want their own particular taste to be validated by everyone liking the same tunes/venues as them. It's never going to happen, somewhere in a parallel universe on an alternate soul source there's a bunch of oldies fans wearing vests and bags moaning about how the original ethic of the scene has changed, since this newie/funkie/latiny/ thing became popular. As I've read this thread or it's type a 100 times before I'm dipping out and leaving it to the 'movers and shakers' to right the wrongs of the soul world 3

Popular Post Andrea Ko Posted March 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 21, 2014 what about just playing good soul records, dance and being passionate about it? How many other ingredients you need? 5
Wiggyflat Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Two scenes....more like 8 scenes. The X over young smart European scene into original records ie funky early seventies and a bit of rnb...progressive people, northern oldies events now populated by baggy trouser wearing late forties onwards people playing the same old records on originals, local events playing boots,ex mods and current mods with their r nb and mid tempo soul nights.Rare soul nights...expensive originals....I just want uptempo northern soul Inc underplayed and newies. 2

Shimmy45 Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Personally, I just like the music and having a dance when I get the chance. I wouldn't mind a Frank Wilson kitchen bin, to be used for ironic purposes only, obviously.
stokesoulboy Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Very negative OZ atb Kev No Kev, just sick of the underground underplayed overplayed bull, good records will always be good records, if someone chooses a skirt big enough to take a missing plane great( if it makes em happy!) etc,i just get on woth it and enjoy the grooves baby Ozz 2

Popular Post Swifty Posted March 22, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 22, 2014 Have I got a problem ? 'cause I like a fair bit of the so called top 500 as that's what I grew up on , I like Xover , 70's Modern !? a bit of Jazz funk and just nice Soul records. even a bit of Youth Club stuff . It has all been part of my musical life. Thank f**k we're all different I say Swifty P.S. I still get goosebumps when I hear Donnie Elbert - Little Piece of Leather 4

Frankie Crocker Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 It's Northern Jim but not as we know it... The scene has evolved to the point there's a scene for anyone who likes soul. Some scene goers kept the faith, others lost it but plenty never had it in the first place. Courses for horses really, Cheltenham for the purists, Ascot for day-trippers and Lingfield for the die-hards. However you look at it, the fragmented scene is what the punters want. 2

Courses for horses really, Cheltenham for the purists, Ascot for day-trippers and Lingfield for the die-hards. However you look at it, the fragmented scene is what the punters want. Well why moan about it? Why not just shut up and get on with it, I would imagine everyone knows where they are going, who they are going to listen to and have a damn good idea of what they are going to hear. No one who goes elsewhere is going to bother them and vice versa so why is it a problem to some who constantly moan about what others get up to in their spare time. Oh and Cheltenham is full of day trippers just like Ascot 1
Guest Dave Ward Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Always been 2 scenes, stuff I like and stuff I don't.
