Soulsmith Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 The night is billed as Northern Soul - Across The Board. The DJ spins The Sounds Of Blackness - I'm Going All The Way. Is it acceptable? Are we either a 'broad minded church' or a 'narrow minded tribe'? Just a bit of fun...... Col.
Chalky Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 some promoters who bill their night as across the board haven't a clue, they think across the board extends only as far as Drizabone or Angie Stone hasn't this been done before
Soulsmith Posted July 10, 2006 Author Posted July 10, 2006 hasn't this been done before Possibly. But couldn't resist it. Picked up the CD 'The Collection' by Sounds Of Blackness in HMV for £4 on saturday. Thought it would be good to share it with everyone.

Guest Matt Male Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 It's soul, but is it northern soul? Col did say 'northern soul' across the board... Is everything northern now..?
Stillsoulin Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Funny one this, most of the tunes listed go well at our charity soul nights frequented by "normal" punters, when played at our Northern nights, Coppertops, they invariably clear the floor. rob h.
Guest Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 It's soul, but is it northern soul? Col did say 'northern soul' across the board... Is everything northern now..? Northern, deffo`,not cheesy
Guest Dodger Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Col did say 'northern soul' across the board... Can one genre be across the board?
Chalky Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 It's soul, but is it northern soul? Col did say 'northern soul' across the board... Is everything northern now..? well if it's played at a northern soul night then yes
Guest Matt Male Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Can one genre be across the board? That's what he said... I took it to mean R&B, Oldies, Newies, 60s, 70s, 80s, whatever..
Guest Matt Male Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 well if it's played at a northern soul night then yes anything played at a northern night is northern..?
Soul Shrews Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 anything played at a northern night is northern..? Yep! Got it in one!

Are we either a 'broad minded church' or a 'narrow minded tribe'? Just a bit of fun...... Col. Noice!! Not my usual cuppa but really liked that. Would sooner hear a few like that than say, Because of You yet again! Drizabone have been mentioned... there's a couple of better tracks than Pressure (much as I like it) on the Conspiracy album IMHO!
Guest Matt Male Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Yep! Got it in one! Ok again for the simple minded 'anything' played at a northern night is northern?
Guest dundeedavie Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 surely the question has answered itself ....if it is across the board then let it be across the board and play the full gamut

Sean Hampsey Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 I'm Going all The Way was Huge as a new release at PITCHES, Rotherham. I just cant fathom (and never have been able to) why the Northern scene often needs to have a 10 - 15 year incubation period before it can accept a Soul track (see the Al Mason thread - i.e. only just acceptable now!). Tragic... but you've heard my rant on this subject before! Across The Board... was a phrase first used at PITCHES to mean just that. Soul Music... Across the board... all eras, all tempo's for all tastes! Sean Hampsey

Sean Hampsey I agree Sean but it hasn't always been this way. New releases got played at Wigan all the time e.g. N.F. Porter - Keep on keeping on, and at Stafford too, Atlantic Star, Jeffrey Osbourne etc.. Maybe it's just a recent thing.
Soul Shrews Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Sorry didn't mean to insult you Why not you dineasour mided correct spilling twot you
Guest Bearsy Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 it sounds soulful enough to me, what a great tune, im looking for one right now Bearsy

Val (Chunky) Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Ann Nesby what a singer. I remember seeing Sounds Of Blackness at the Southport weekender back in the day. Loved it!!!

Couple to add: I Believe Everything Is Gonna Be Alright All should be able toi be had for less than a fiver - Can't fail with them! From the ' From Africa to America ' LP I think! The period of late 80s to mid 90s - Esp. from the UK saw IMO some great music - Affair / Paul Johnson / etc etc Labels such as Boogie Back etc. Across the board indeed. ATB Rich
Guest musicden786 Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Great Modern Tune. Fits the across the board tag and well worth a play to the open minded.

Porter - Keep on keeping on, and at Stafford too, Atlantic Star, Jeffrey Osbourne etc.. Maybe it's just a recent thing. Agree Matt that 'some' tracks have been played as new releases (I've made a bit of a career of it myself) and infact the Northern scene was founded on records that were either new or only 4-5 years old, but that's why I stated that the scene 'often needs to have' rather than 'always'needs to have'. Sadly, though, I think you'll agree, its more often than not that Soul Music itself is way ahead of the 'Northern' Soul scene's ability to absorb it. There are dozens of tracks that should have been played when new, snubbed at the time, only to be later 'discovered' or deemed acceptable many years later. Good to see the above track getting the thumbs up though in the poll, if only belatedly. But dont ya' all just wonder what tracks came out in the last 12 - 18 months... that the Northern Scene should have played... rather than waiting until 2010. Sean Hampsey
Guest Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 If I went to a venue advertised as "across the board" I would expect and hope to hear music from 60s R&B through to contempory dance tunes, after all irrespective of year of issue they are all branches of the same tree and....it's still growing S o B gets a thumbs up and it's a yes from me.
Guest soul kitten Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 this is right up my misses street!! shes converting me slowly
Guest soul_hull Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 not a bad track - but in my opinion - i'm looking for a certain something from soul tunes, not sure if this will ever do it....maybhe it will maybe it won't - i'll stick it on the old mp3 player and see if it cooks... anyhoo - we are entering into a world of.......... wait for it...... my mix is better than yours!!!!!! oooeeeerrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Guest marion Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 across the board means i'm expecting to hear a few decades of quality soul music - 1960 to 2006 and beyond, in't nothing wrong with that ! I went to the Without Boundaries Summer Ball on saturday and that was a fantastic array of good quality tunes spanning afew decades and stuff due out in the near future- most people got up and stayed up dancing.. a few sat down when the different DJ's came on ...but it is a free world, each to their own. I went home with sore feet so i was happy enough !
