Magnificent 7, Never Will I, gets played in here at least once a week, "so close, a breeze can't blow between us, so tight, you couldn't part us with a Tommy gun" brilliant lyric, and the delivery, well, perfection

Everytime I hear . Peggy March. If you love me. It takes me back to the greatest, happiest days of my life as a 18year old at the Casino. Such a haunting intro. Steve. Who dosnt care what the soul police think about my choice.

What's wrong with me baby, invitations great intro one of the first northern tunes I heard.

Another that always works for me. I'm sure that as a kid I heard it on radio Caroline.

Posted

Mel Britt - She'll come running back - the fadeout at the end always gets me

Another Sleepless night - Phil Flowers - on the DOT  Our Man in Washington LP after the slow intro when it just build and builds - gets me every time

Ty Karim - Lightin' up - Romark - the intro and first line - Darling you 'axed' me to leave - bloody brilliant!

Great thread by the way!

Hmmm,

so many to choose,  but who can resist the strings on Mel Britt, Lou Ragland ?  The sax solos on Evelyn king's 'SHAME', or Mystic Merlins, 'Just can't give you up'?  Not forgetting the Memphis horns on 'try a little tenderness'

a multitude of quality tunes, love em

Hey,

Ok I would love you guys to experience what I get from this moment of magic!

On the flip side of "Little Woman" by Ronnie West on Goins, in the incredibly soulful Movin On there is a bum note in a sax break about 2/3rds way through the song that will pierce your soul! It makes me shiver every time, just incredible. Its perfection in its inperfection and had to be case of one take n thats your lot.

There is also a strange phenomenon I've discovered with this record. Please please please, to get the full effect of what I'm describing play it over the head phones and close your eyes and truely listen to the words. You will be lost in the song by the time that bum note hits ya and it will send a shiver down yr spine.

The phenomenon I mentioned is , anybody I have played this for over the headphones, by the time the song is finished and they open their eyes, they all to man/woman make the same rocking motion to the beat of the song.

The power of music eh ! Please enjoy n let me know what yee guys think ?

The Charles Johnson is an absolute masterpiece in my humble opinion. Never grow tired of listening to it. Literaly find something new in it everytime I listen to it. Its just epic. It has everything for me.

My favourite bit is when he sings "my love is shining clear and bright" so simple, Beautiful stuff!

Also I always found the use of the oboe at the start of Rose Royce's Wishing on a star very haunting . Stunning tune !

Great thread this, its great to hear what gets to people in a tune.

Great thread, have a few to mention - Magnetics/Count the Days, last 30 seconds.Charles Johnson/ You made a mistake, the drummer (I think) shouts "hey" about two thirds of the way through.C.Alexander +the Natural 3/Pay them no mind - all 2 mins 45 secs.O'jays/Now he's home, last 40 seconds or so where the chorus and backing just swells up.

Love this thread - some great recommendations. Can think of so many hair raising moments when it really can't get any better:-

The intro to Barbara Lewis 'Remember the feeling'

The start of The Invitations 'Look on the good side' where it breaks into the main string riff

The whole of The Dells 'It's all up to you'

The last chorus of Four Tops 'I just can't get you out of my mind' when they all sing together

The horns and drum roll at the start of Frank Beverly 'If that's what you wanted'

The fade out of George Pepp 'Feeling is real' - "you're breaking my heart baby....don't break my heart'

The intro and string break in Barbara McNair 'It happens every time'

The piano and vocal at the start of Jerry Fuller 'I get carried away'

The fade out of Masqueraders 'Please take me back' - "please...please"

The start of Donny Hathaway's 'Lord help me'

The start of Frankie & Johnny 'I'll hold you' (I know!)

Marvin Junior's "whoaa...ohhh" at the end of Make Sure

The bit halfway through Jasper St Co 'Since I found you' where the vocal kicks in (Cleethorpes modern room!)

When the organ comes in during the second verse of D.J. Rogers 'love brought me back'

Dean Courtney 'love you just can't walk away' - "Love.....what have I done"

The echoey piano in Carol & Gerri 'How can I ever find the way'

The start of Hamilton Movement 'She's gone' - "you know life, is a funny funny thing"

The piano riff at the start of Timmie Williams 'Competition'

I could go on and on!

Probably my favourite is so obscure I would suggest you probably need to be stoned to appreciate it. Used to come in from Droylesden niters back in the early 90's and sit and have a mug of tea and a smoke listening to tunes. My absolute fave post niter spin was Johnnie Taylor 'What about my love' (Beverly Glen), and in particular the bit at the end of the second verse where the drummer drops the hi-hat out for a few beats, just leaving the bass drum in. Such a small trick but somehow so impossibly cool it just makes me go 'aaaarrrghhhh!!!' every time - still does now when I hear it.

Tried to explain it to my mate Mark at Cleethorpes a couple of years ago and once he tuned in he fell off his chair laughing about it - see if it does it for you!

Some very good shouts Ijust love records with that instrumental part like...

Can't fault the choices so far. Just like to mention the Fantastic Four's As long As I live. Great production all round but when they spin off into that melodic chorus, buzzing and just sends me. Getting a lot of plays at chez D at the moment.

I was listening to radio 2 alone driving in the car the other Saturday morning and this came on.

https://youtu.be/W9ONt6D2noA

It just wiped me out nostalgia-wise.....for a couple of minutes I was back there with a big lump in my throat and a few tears in my eyes.

Listen to it again, what an unbelievable track that is!!!

goosebumps?.....shivers down the spine??......there is ONE supreme hands down WINNER.....LINDA JONES, unquestionably, and without any shred of a doubt, THIS woman HAD IT ALL.  not an octave on the chart she couldn't reach...coupled with THE genius that was GEORGE KERR, her contributions to soul music are nothing less than SUBLIMINAL!..we could talk for eternity about wonderfully dynamic orchestrations and the legendary and integral sax break that is the trademark of many historic northern soul records, but only ONE ARTIST can contrive a "vocal break", if such a thing exists...and that would lead all and sundry to conclude that i speak of "MY HEART NEEDS A BREAK", a song in itself that could easily have doubled for a blockbusting 007 soundtrack, when from out of nowhere, bursts forth, a mind blowingly sumptuous mini-aria that is breathtaking, yet not beyond the realm of a woman, mature beyond her years...she takes it in her stride with ease, pitched within the confines of kerr's heartwrenching lyrics.

a true heroine of the northern soul saga, who seccumbed to diabetes, LINDA was taken from us, aged just 28 years in 1973, an incalculable loss in terms of her mastery of a meaningful song, her catalogue has no flaws, such was her very real greatness...had she lived, what price a performance on a stage in this country??.

The Dynamics on Dyna  at the end of the song the guy sings "just ask the lonely " twice but on the second time( as a lot of black singers do) pronounces the word "ask" as "axe" I fuckin love-it

Mine is Monique - If You Love Me. It's the part towards the end that pleads "I love you baby, yes I do" when her voice cracks. Such unbelievable passion nearly moves me to tears every time I hear it.

And yes, it's my ringtone!!
