On the flip side of "Little Woman" by Ronnie West on Goins, in the incredibly soulful Movin On there is a bum note in a sax break about 2/3rds way through the song that will pierce your soul! It makes me shiver every time, just incredible. Its perfection in its inperfection and had to be case of one take n thats your lot. There is also a strange phenomenon I've discovered with this record. Please please please, to get the full effect of what I'm describing play it over the head phones and close your eyes and truely listen to the words. You will be lost in the song by the time that bum note hits ya and it will send a shiver down yr spine. The phenomenon I mentioned is , anybody I have played this for over the headphones, by the time the song is finished and they open their eyes, they all to man/woman make the same rocking motion to the beat of the song. Never grow tired of listening to it. Literaly find something new in it everytime I listen to it. Its just epic. It has everything for me. My favourite bit is when he sings "my love is shining clear and bright" so simple, Beautiful stuff! Also I always found the use of the oboe at the start of Rose Royce's Wishing on a star very haunting . Stunning tune ! Great thread this, its great to hear what gets to people in a tune. Atb Clint

Used to come in from Droylesden niters back in the early 90's and sit and have a mug of tea and a smoke listening to tunes. My absolute fave post niter spin was Johnnie Taylor 'What about my love' (Beverly Glen), and in particular the bit at the end of the second verse where the drummer drops the hi-hat out for a few beats, just leaving the bass drum in. Such a small trick but somehow so impossibly cool it just makes me go 'aaaarrrghhhh!!!' every time - still does now when I hear it. Tried to explain it to my mate Mark at Cleethorpes a couple of years ago and once he tuned in he fell off his chair laughing about it - see if it does it for you!

Agentsmith Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 goosebumps?.....shivers down the spine??......there is ONE supreme hands down WINNER.....LINDA JONES, unquestionably, and without any shred of a doubt, THIS woman HAD IT ALL. not an octave on the chart she couldn't reach...coupled with THE genius that was GEORGE KERR, her contributions to soul music are nothing less than SUBLIMINAL!..we could talk for eternity about wonderfully dynamic orchestrations and the legendary and integral sax break that is the trademark of many historic northern soul records, but only ONE ARTIST can contrive a "vocal break", if such a thing exists...and that would lead all and sundry to conclude that i speak of "MY HEART NEEDS A BREAK", a song in itself that could easily have doubled for a blockbusting 007 soundtrack, when from out of nowhere, bursts forth, a mind blowingly sumptuous mini-aria that is breathtaking, yet not beyond the realm of a woman, mature beyond her years...she takes it in her stride with ease, pitched within the confines of kerr's heartwrenching lyrics. a true heroine of the northern soul saga, who seccumbed to diabetes, LINDA was taken from us, aged just 28 years in 1973, an incalculable loss in terms of her mastery of a meaningful song, her catalogue has no flaws, such was her very real greatness...had she lived, what price a performance on a stage in this country??.
