I attended a Northern Soul night at the weekend, musically it was acceptable, but In an adjacent room, I was somewhat dismayed to find what can only be described as a small 'indoor market' selling a plethora of Northern Soul related items:

Various items of clothing, drinks coasters, mouse mats, bootlegs DVDs, bootleg vinyl, bootleg CDs of Kent LPs, more bootleg CDs, cloth patches, coffee mugs, gaudy looking slip mats and numerous other types of tacky 'KTF' and Wigan Casino goodies/crap.

Thankfully, I did notice that punters weren't exactly queuing up...

I guess that sometime soon, somebody will have the brass neck to openly sell illegal copies of Elaine Constantine's film. but we owe it to her and ourselves to resist buying them.

I know that what I found was not the norm, that most soul nights are not like what I have just described above and most promoters/venues would not knowingly accept the selling of such trash.

I haven't dared look, but I would imagine that eBay is awash with the stuff anyway.

Maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age.

Blimey, did you go in a Tardis or have they started it up again?

Musically, it was largely a Tardis job - but of course it was sold as such.

These kind of Market Traders even popped up down the revival (Whitworth St) Wheel before it closed.

I guess it is what we have to expect from some "promoters" these days...... :(

These indoor markets are nothing new, they were at the "old" Prestatyn too, a few years back. There have been a number of threads about the breadth of repro memorobilia doing the rounds, they were quite funny some of the things people found. I wouldn't mind if it was genuine 60s and 70s posters, dansettes, Russ's tea cup from Wigan etc etc.....but it's all "Made in China" and brand new.

I'm surprised nobody has come up with one of those magazines where over 23,876 weeks you can build up your own scale replica of the Casino.

LEGO have also missed a major trick there.....! Edited by Mace

mouse mats?   :D

At Prestatyn you could buy tea pots, salt & pepper shaker sets, cutting boards, wind-up scooters, drinks coasters of pressings (as opposed to drinks coasters of originals!), I could go on but would run out of space!  There was also a shop that in addition to selling soul-related T-shirts had various non-soul related clothing like little girls party dresses...  All very odd IMO!

The 'Faith' was sold years ago - the 'Northern Soul' scene has been sold out & being wrung out for its last few bob & has been for well over a decade & more & it actually started back in the day.

Any self respecting real fan is long gone & takes this pastiche, masquerading as NS with a huge pinch of salt....

Do we care ?....nah, the real scene is still out there for those that want it, let the fakers, tourists & those that have raped n piledged it for everything its got crack on....when its on its knees financially with everything sucked out of it, they'll be gone again....

We will still be here tho, diggin, collecting, dancing & listening to fresh, exciting, soulful, dance music in clubs that take a little effort to find, with punters, DJ's n promoters who have some self respect & a love for SOUL MUSIC in its many forms...

Russ

Russ I agree with everything you say but  I've heard you (and others) say many times "when the tourists have got bored gone and the last drop's been squeezed out" etc etc…. well there aint no sign of it happening anytime soon I'm sorry to say :(

Yeah but you can have competitions to see who can find the most horrendous piece of tat. It's always worth just going looking for the laugh factor.

I think the Crown for that would sit nicely on the head of the Northern Soul Goliwog on sale as Prestatyn a few years back. Edited by Byrney

As someone who bought his first record in 1958 (don't ask), "giving it time" is not the easiest way for me look at stuff these days...... :(

.....ah your'e all belittling these entrepreneurs...............but they'll be having the last laugh in a couple of years when the market for "soul power geriatric aids" (pat. pending) goes stratospheric with the detonation of the demographic time-bomb !

....."tenna ladys.......now also available in alto, bass and baritone"

..... stair-lift with bose sound surround system featuring NS juke box..."get up those dancers to the soundtrack of your dotage" (default setting plays curtis mayfield whilst ascending......and walter jackson whilst descending)

......"dancing zimmer frame - with pre-set automated dance styles.....simply remove your dentures and hang on for dear life whilst the "Torch-Trotter" (pat. pending) moves and grooves in your chosen dance-style.....spin/stomp/shuffle/acrobat*....(*no liability is admitted for personal injury sustained if performing backdrops on this device which must not be attempted without the prior attachment of the "north notts.(pat. pending)" safety roll-cage)"

....."thought about planning your funeral yet?.........why not think outside the box....and have an all niter instead of a requiem....for our list of available graveyard shift DJ's look us up on Face-Sores"  :hypocrite:

Absolutely fantastic!!!   I want one of those stairlifts

Hi Steve. they have always been a feature of Prestatyn but this recent one was imho over the top, and where the stalls was set up in the record bar just seemed to be a bit to much. there was nothing wrong when they where set up in the bandit area :wicked: for the people that are into that sort of thing. just my opinion

Well Winnie just lately i have helped out a young friend with his night he asked me to play soul and reggae so i do a warm up spot and it's a free night and the youngsters just want banging fast beats but a few do like the old classics.there would need to be thousands to keep northern alive in the future all i see is a oldies revival scene at the moment. Plus decent real music is not fashionable

We live In hope Toad, all I know is my lad came to love the music, He has a great collection of northern soul (not bootlegs),Ran a well respected Charity event for the last six years! Just by coming with me to Cala Gran in the 90 s. I would love to see more Youth out there. Winnie puts it down in print well.Rod

No way will a film attract young people forget them it ain't gonna happen!

Dream on as those are into it will fade away when getting married etc just like before! Anyway the scene has been dumbed down and diluted for it to become a credible choice

  Len, what are you like!! I'm not ALWAYS positive, I actually hate the majority of the scene at the moment, but just put up with it, & it does make me value more elements of the scene that still float my boat.

All the best chuck

Who remembers Dave Evisons soul mugs? There was a period from the early eighties up until 87 or 88 when the tat became minimal.I then remember Dave Evisons soul mugs being sold in the back of Echoes.I think this was the Tats return. This stuff goes with the photoshop owls and hearts. There's even a Facebook patch now.... 20 years time.Yep was online that day that The Snake was posted. It was a great night on the keyboard.Ktf...Koko...Wtf!

I bought all 23,876 issues and built the scale replica, only for the council to come and knock it down a week later.

I've left the scale model of Russ Winstanley standing in the ruins.

Caught Russ trimming his nose hair in 76, so picked it up as I thought it might be an investment for the future... Not had a bid on e-bay, but did sell one of Richard's toe nails that broke off when I was bathing his feet Magdalene stylee :)

dunno why the the chap who started this thread is so surprised,  its what, 50 year old scene? awash with allot of older folk; teenagers dont bother with that stuff, they are too busy getting wrecked and getting off with each other, but once your over 30 its fair game, you know this...

If you went to the States, they always have stuff like this, if you cant make money on the refreshments or the door, you sell the punters any old tat at the back of the room...

I do love that toilet roll Jess! tat that you wipe your bum with, what could be a better flagrant waste of money, actually I need a new Mouse Mat, no not to wipe me arse with... :elvis:
