Posting this as am just  a bit weary of reading people trying to make out that it is some sort of downer on this site just because some members also use facebook

Its not,..

Soul Source is doing just fine

In fact Soul Source in 2014  is doing better than it has ever done!

January saw us having its most active month ever, that's the most active since 1997

Stats such as views and unique visitors have hit new levels for January 2014

Members per month logging in are up and the same for members posting  and the amount of new topics being posted up is also up,

The ongoing Inactive members campaign has so far has meant that over 200+ inactive members have come back to the site after a lengthy abscence

And both the months of Jan and Feb 2014 have seen some of the highest figures for new members signing up with over 450+ new members so far in 2014

A quick look at the many features on offer here and how the members use them should tell you more and put the ott negative posts and claims seen elsewhere in place

Myself I do find that facebook is good at certain things and bad for others  and am sure that it is a similar experience for many  members on here and I bet you could say the same about soul source

Anyway, apologies for the interruption, just felt a need to post after reading some late nite claims.and some posts on facebook

Thanks go to all the members and all the mods here on Soul Source for getting us off to such a vibrant foot in 2014!

Thanks and regards

mike

admin/owner of Soul Source

and of course if you are on facebook and want to keep up with the real world when chating to your mother-in law then I do know of a page..

You can change your name on your profile Peter, up to 3 times I think - I changed mine to MrC last year when some geezer appeared on here making posts with a user name that was almost identical to mine

As far as Facebook goes, I go on it to post a new status every week, and to catch up with a couple of games I play on my phone for an hour every weekend. It's very much a social thing, no real substance, which is fine for those who can take it for what it is, but is also why Soul Source is THE port of call for anyone wanting real information about soul music and it's artists, it's like the Wikipedia for soul - but with the correct information~!  - WikiSoul? SoulWiki? - could be a new section.....

You're doing a great job Mike and the rest of the site Admins!

Yes, truly fantastic but with the worst name for a forum of all time I reckon...

collectors corner would have been better than Look At Your Box.

I had a dvd once called look at your box.... not a thing about records, and I've never seen anyone that was in it at a soul night either!

LAYB sounds like a perfect forum for Snapchat though..... now that's a totally different story!   :wicked:

One good thing about FB that no one's mentioned is the chance to connect with the artists, got quite a few as friends on there. A situation that you couldn't have dreamed of 20 years ago!

Hi Paul

Yep, I could change it but Peter is already taken. I don't think I have ever seen a post from a Peter so its probably an inactive account. I know Mike is working his way through them so one day....................................

Mike, can you give that Gordon Russell bloke a job.... keep him out of mischief

As I only came out of the neolithic age a couple of years ago I never felt the need for any social "media" other than a phone call or a face to face meeting with someone.

Used to come on here merely for event information as I'm not a serious collector, DJ or otherwise inclined to promote myself or anything else.

Totally addicted to this site now but have recently got going on FB so I can get at photo's from events and keep up with the people I see out and about because most of them don't come on here.

Glad to hear that this year has kicked off well for Soul-Source......well done and many thanks for all the hard work to those at the helm.

Keep up the good work mike soul source is the site for northern soul....

If you like to read posts from teenage girls (or ladies who like to think they are still teenagers), all using the C-word a great deal (because they can - ooh,how exciting!!), then FB is fabulous.

In 20 years, we will look back on it in pretty much the same way as we now look back on Garry Glitter.

And all those ladies will claim it wasn't them that used FB!

Ah well....

Soul Source is by far the best, it is streets ahead for in-depth discussion about any given topic or record but there is more to FB than the social side.  There are some groups for specific genres that are far from social with substance and knowledge.  I take what I want from Soul Source, FB, Soulful Detroit, Southern Soul and various other forums.

soul source is the number one for all things soul related, wouldnt be without it,on here every day, huge thanks to mike and the mods

jason

Keep up the Sterling work Mike and the Mods

Remember when me and Greg started the Capitol Soul Club back in 99

without Soul Source not half the people would have heard about the Club

And the music we were playing at the time.

I come on here for the in depth discussions about Labels, artists and such like

All great stuff

And the Records sales to dent a Hole  in my wallet

I like a couple of FB group sites, even post sounds sometimes, but there are some trolls even on the NS groups. Soul Source is excellent, proper soulies, but it has a reputation of not suffering fools easily. If I need to ask a question I go to SS, but do some digging first, otherwise I know I'll get cleaned out....great site and enjoyed being with the people I've communicated with !

:hatsoff2: HI ALL..... True fact, by making a post on FACEBOOK led to me to lose my job in the NHS, so it's no surprise that I rate SOULSOURCE, Yes it is another true fact that some people have a dislike to some of my posts and I have been warned about, but I have not been concord,

SOULSOAUCE is very important to me, as a way to communicate with people, since ill health prevents me going out,

The success of the Record Club is quality and if you have the time, just look at tunes that have been posted and compare it to other lists, and you will see why it's the #1 site fore the rare record collector,

KEEP ON KEEPING ON MIKE

FB would be better if people stopped posting the same northern oldies on it 5 times a week - soul source is 3 or 4 times a day visit for me whereas FB is once or twice a week now. Keep up the good work Mike

:hatsoff2: HI ALL   So true don't get me wrong, I love the classics from the WHEEL TORCH & WIGAN, HOWEVER I have many myself, the reason that I DID NOT MENTION IT, IS I DON' WANT TO OFFEND THE POSTER, For example the thread on FB that is dedicated to TONY JEBB, Has turned into the same people just posting  a YOU TUBE video,

SOULSOURCE RECORD CLUB gives a reason of why the posting has been made and some titles are completely new to my ears, ok a lot of the postings are by a dedicated & knowledgeable bunch of soulsters but it's if you were with them at a venue and feels very real, well it does for me, the RECORD CLUB has made me aware of the MODERN SOUL & CROSSOVER SOUL records that I would of never heard if the club did not exist as there is no other site that comes near to it, well I can't find one.

The new thread for the club starts in the early hours tomorrow, so don't forget to put up a posting for your 45 of the day, Many thanks again MIKE & all the RECORD CLUB SOULSTERS,

 ,DAVE K

Soul Source is still the best particularly when it comes to information and is still my first port of call.  Facebook has its uses and is probably better for promoting your event as you can get your promotion over to a larger group of people, many who have no interest in the collecting side of the scene.  FB is more social but there are some great groups, Gethro's already stated and for me the Stafford one.

Thanks to Mike and the mods for the great work they do.

tend to disagree with the view that event promotion is better on fb,

ok for your aunties birthday maybe or a nite out at the pub with your mates

but from what seen of fb promotion nowadays  it all seems like ever decreasing circles

how many does your event reach on there?

think a few earlier comments in this thread are telling

on here most events that make max use of the features seem to be doing great

plus of course as the comments are all independently moderated then theres none of that facebook feel

all imo of course

I don't do aunties nights out or nights at the pub with mates Mike.

However IMO, You need both, Soul Source and Facebook and any other means available.  Most events have their own group and are targeted to those who have an interest in that event.  You do get more feedback and chat on FB IMO.  Lifeline for instance is advertised via its group, the walls of its promoters and DJ and is shared by members, so will reach quite a lot of people  The "going" clicks are often into three figures on FB yet very few on here, 20 for the last Lifeline allnigter. The Lifeline group on FB has 623 members.  Don't take what I said the wrong way, it wasn't meant that way, it isn't a dig or anything, I'm just going by personal experience and the interaction with members here and on FB.  At the end of the day there is only a few hundred interested in attending allnighters.

Can get a little fractious on here but that is the beauty of SS.  Allows you to express your opinion and if you get a little too heated the Boss steps in and slaps your wrist.  Learn so much on here whereas on FB you get interlopers chipping in with meaningless comments on subjects they know little or nothing about.  Saying that .......

I think we do need both as a lot of folk are on one but not the other so if you promote or sell then you can use the best of both.  Trouble is that you also get a little of the worst of both but hey, we are all grown ups, aren't we ?

Soul source for me,.the only game in town. used to go on facebook, but found it was full of walter mitty types & Divs, that "i went to Wigan Casino" group..a big chunk of them never stepped inside the place...final straw was someone selling some lapel badges about being there,..i,m  sticking where the genuine Soulies hang out....on ere

Chalky, your Auntie has been in touch and said where were you last night, it was brilliant down the pub.

SS is quite literally the source for me, I always check here first when I need to know something. I also use FB, but in a totally different way. So the two can peacefully co-exist quite happily in my interweb adventures !

Facebook is care in the community without the interesting drugs....Having said that I do know of a promoter who lost his venue two days before the gig but could inform all his regulars via facebook so maybe it has a commercial value. In my days of promoting you had to bribe someone to stand on the rain swept streets of Manchester and point the way.

dean

use both and enjoy both....have to step back from getting into arguments on both sometimes

as a promoter I think you need both but have to agree with chalky on FB being better..you may have hundreds in your group plus all your friends not in your group and they can all 'share' your event with their friends and you can share your event on other groups and so forth the number of people who could see and read posts about your event far outways the views on ss IMO

buy and occasionally sell on both but the number of sellers who only advertise on one or the other is getting smaller

ss is better if you don't want to get involved in non soul matters you can keep out of 'freebasing' where FB you cant help but see countless reposting of what is a lot of the time bullshit..again IMO

SS is also far better for knowledge on soul..amazing the amount of things ive learned about soul as a music and a scene

keep up the good work!!

That IWTWC page is poor other than a handful of posters. For a bit of comic relief have a look at their take on OVO vs boots being played at Prestatyn. So many speaking with authority as ahem... DJs with no real idea of what they're talking about. It seemed many didn't really understand what an original or pressing is. It's apparent that it and some other pages on FB are full of warriors who had a year or two tops at this game but because of the era they were there think it's gives them some credibility.

The Stafford page is a world apart from this, informed and cracking entertainment.

Mike, Please, please don't change Look At Your Box - it's a brilliant title, distills the whole record collecting thing down to a simple, tangible image - our boxes of records.

It only sounds naughty to Finbarr Saunders ears!

I'm still not sure how to use Facebook properly.  Nice to hear from old mates out of the blue but I don't do a lot on there soul wise, though I do like Chalky's group and some of the old photo groups - but the thing I really dislike about it, is people keep signing me up to groups which I have no interest in - an invite would be nice, but not an unauthorised sign up.

Brings back a memory ........... I worked in a clothes shop in the mid 70's and when we ran short of customers to take the piss out of we used to think of other ways. Across the street was Chelsea Girl, most of the girls that worked there were pretty fit but the manageress was an absolute dragon who would chase us out if we wandered across. I think she wanted the fit girls for herself! One of our favourite japes with new Saturday staff was to pretend to sort out some stock and half way through moving stuff about we would say we needed something to put all the stuff in ....

.... a cardboard box?

..... a big one possibly?

.... just nip across to Chelsea Girl, they had a delivery yesterday so they'll have loads of boxes

..... ask the manageress, she usually lets us have one

.... get a big box if you can

Once they had headed across we would watch and listen from the doorway, nine times out of ten the dopes would walk in and just say "Have you got a big box?" or "Can I have a box, have you got a big one?" and as this used to happen every other week she was well hacked off with it, you could hear the shouting all down the street.

We were easily pleased in the 70's :D

I use facebook for keeping in touch with old army mates as they are spread all over the world.

The thing about advertising on there or getting the word out on something is that if you post something on someone's timeline all their friends see it and may post it on someone else's or share it or summat - things can get to a lot of people quickly. But facebook is sh*te for a discussion as it tends to be quite an instant media (though not as instant as twitter which I still can't see the point of).

I like this place as you can pop in and see what is going on, comment if you want, come back later and see where the subject has gone, comment again etc.
