Jason S Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Four good new (and recent) releases - pm or email soulstacks@gmail.com Postage £1.60 1st UK/£4 Europe/£5 Worldwide for up to 3 discs. Wanda Davis - Where Did You Sleep Last Night/Inst (Secret Stash) New £6 Follow up soul effort from this increasingly important label sees the 'Minnesota Queen Of Soul' return to wax decades after cutting the ever indemand 'Save Me' on Project Soul in younger days. Hear Derobe Dance Band - Gogoplate/Kem Dahg (Secret Stash) New £6 Another juggernaut collision between afro-beat and Ethio jazz on this debut release from the Derobe Dance Band: two sides of non-stop, in your face afro-funk. Excellent. Hear Hear Trey J's - I Found It All In You/We Got A Thing Going On (Soul Junction) New £9 Stellar modern soul rarity backed with a largely unheard mid tempo number. Really good sound quality on this issue allowing the full force of the grooves to come crashing through on what was the group’s sole released recording. Members of the Trey J’s Review — a touring combo trading their goods on the early 70s college and Chitlin’ Circuit — would later ply their trade as part of hit makers Brick Hear Hear Elbowed-Out - Taking A Giant Step/Girl You Got Magic (Soul Junction) New £9 Seattle act Elbowed-Out recorded two gold standard tracks that — unbelievably — never saw a waxing at the time. The pick for me is the breezy, funky ‘Girl You Got Magic’ on this, their debut release. Both sides rock: ‘Taking a Giant Step’ has all the ingredients for instant ‘Modern Soul’ dancefloor appeal in the grooves while the lyrics speak of the ills of society and how to dodge them. Class!
