He certainly has, thing with Phil Collins, I think he was pretty hip kid in the sixties, and his favorite band according to a TV programme I saw was 'The Action', who did my favorite version of 'Since I Lost my baby' sorry Temps... as for Englebert..... words fail me.... Kevin Jones
David Ruffin must be turning in his grave, god rest him. It seems everyone wants to get on the Motown bandwagon. Michael Bolton has just released an album of all Motown cover versions titled Hitsville (I think). The thing IMO is that you can not re-create or better these Motown originals. What will be next, suggestions please. Kev Link to comment Social source share

BrianB
To be honest neither are any good. Tainted Love is up there with Interplay and other youth club 'classics' before we knew any better. Just for the record, Tainted Love was not broken in youth clubs, but at venues such as the Pendelum, Catacombs, The Mecca and the Casino. It may have been played to younger enthusiasts when booted, but it was a record, as Pete says, that helped drive the Northern scene forwards in the early seventies. Too many people dismiss this type of record as "youth club" as through no fault of theirs, they were just too young to be on the scene. I believe this term has become derogatory, and imo shows more about the person classing the record as such, than it does about the song itself. To me its a classic intro, great vocals and a stand out track. The Cliff and EH version of the mighty Tempts is just laughable, again in my opinion. 2 Link to comment Social source share

Of course I know it wasn't broken in youth clubs, stop being so patronising, and it doesn't say bugger all about me just because I dislike the song. I first heard it at youth clubs, but yes I know it was being played elsewhere at the time. So what if I call it a youth club record? To me it was a youth club record because until I went to Wigan that's where I heard it played along with many other 'youth club' records, which were better than Tainted Love in my opinion, Barnaby Bye, Kiki Dee, yes even Peggy March. It might be a derogatory term to you, but to me it just means a time and place and it was my first experience of northern alongside many others. I don't disagree that it was a sound that drove the scene forward, it doesn't mean I have to like it or can't have an opinion on it. Apologies to the topic starter for dragging this thread off topic. Bloody hell Matt, it was not meant as a dig at you, it was just to say that in my view, the term YT record means that the person is of a certain age. Not old enough to be at the venues at that time, but was young enough to be listening to the sounds at a YT. If someone calls them YT records, they must have been around 14 to 15 in 73 or 74. I don't like the term personally. That's all I was saying. Best wishes, Brian Link to comment Social source share
