ricticman Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 is one of my all time fave Tempts tunes, I've loved it with a passion for over 40 years which brings me to Engelbert and Cliff's cover version, being played on radio 2 Is this the worse ever [ to date at least ] cover of a classic motown tune ?
Pete S Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Rolling Stones killed a couple of great Motown tunes.
Pete S Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 God what about The Fall doing Ghost In My House, I know some people think this is genius but I don't. 1
Quinvy Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Oi! Cliff, Englebert.........NO!!!!!!!!! Leave it. 2
Mal C Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) Phil Collins has murdered a few. He certainly has, thing with Phil Collins, I think he was pretty hip kid in the sixties, and his favorite band according to a TV programme I saw was 'The Action', who did my favorite version of 'Since I Lost my baby' sorry Temps... as for Englebert..... words fail me.... Kevin Jones Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 David Ruffin must be turning in his grave, god rest him. It seems everyone wants to get on the Motown bandwagon. Michael Bolton has just released an album of all Motown cover versions titled Hitsville (I think). The thing IMO is that you can not re-create or better these Motown originals. What will be next, suggestions please. Kev
Guest JIM BARRY Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 What an awfull version from an old has been and ...well another old has been..
The Yank Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Michael Bolton's version of "Reach Out I'll Be There" is unbelievably bad !
Guest MBarrett Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) What an awful version from an old has been and ...well another old has been.. I had to check - combined age 150! Guest Matt Male Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) How about the Flying Lizards version of 'Money'? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W25_jgiY51I Edited March 3, 2014 by Matt Male
Guest Matt Male Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Soft Cell doing Tainted Love A better version than Gloria Jones in my opinion.
Ian Parker Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 A better version than Gloria Jones in my opinion. Ouch! Really? They cant even sing the correct lyrics fer gawd sake. 3
Guest Matt Male Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Ouch! Really? They cant even sing the correct lyrics fer gawd sake. To be honest neither are any good. Tainted Love is up there with Interplay and other youth club 'classics' before we knew any better.
Gogger Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 A better version than Gloria Jones in my opinion. two lasses sang it on the voice on saturday , better than soft cell imho
Guest Matt Male Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 two lasses sang it on the voice on saturday , better than soft cell imho Yes, I saw that. I agree it was a great version. Had real power, which Gloria Jones' weak vocal doesn't have.
Pete S Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 How about the Flying Lizards version of 'Money'? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W25_jgiY51I Brilliant version
Godzilla Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 We talked about this once before and I think you'll have to pull something fairly spectacular out of the hat before I surrender the blue ribbon I was awarded for Tim "Rocky Horror show" Curry's excruciating version of Baby Love. It's worth a few quid though so snaffle it up if you see it... 1
Soul16 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 The Slits - I heard it through the grapevine Thankfully, I didn't know it existed until last week, wish I still didn't.
Soulhawk1960 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Yes, I saw that. I agree it was a great version. Had real power, which Gloria Jones' weak vocal doesn't have. Gloria Jones' weak vocal ? just goes to show we all hear things differently !!!!!!!
Prophonics 2029 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I kinda like The Outsiders version off the LP

Soulman58 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Prophonics Are you serious? And don't tell me he couldn't sing
Soulman58 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 is one of my all time fave Tempts tunes, I've loved it with a passion for over 40 years which brings me to Engelbert and Cliff's cover version, being played on radio 2 Is this the worse ever [ to date at least ] cover of a classic motown tune ? The interesting thing for me is would anyone have guessed who the singers were if you weren't told
Prophonics 2029 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Prophonics Are you serious? And don't tell me he couldn't sing I didn't post it upon You Tube only but its a better version than Cliff Humperdikers effort. to claw the way into the rare Northern market.
Winsford Soul Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 To be honest neither are any good. Tainted Love is up there with Interplay and other youth club 'classics' before we knew any better. Before we knew any better. What sort of statement is that. They where relevant to me and tens of thousands of others and still are Steve who has never forgotten where he came from musically 2
Popular Post Pete S Posted March 4, 2014 Popular Post Posted March 4, 2014 To be honest neither are any good. Tainted Love sure got a lot of people into Northern and even now hearing the intro can send shivers down the spine, what a record...this really is Northern Soul 4
tosspot Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Kim Wilde was a very low point imo Darren When I play Linda Queen on Rod, my missus always says she sounds like Kim Wilde, so she couldn't have been THAT bad lol
Sunnysoul Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Tainted Love sure got a lot of people into Northern and even now hearing the intro can send shivers down the spine, what a record...this really is Northern Soul However the extended remix of Tainted Love which AVI released in the early 80s is a travesty ...
Guest Matt Male Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Bloody hell, there's more fuss about me not liking Tainted Love, than over Putin invading the Ukraine. (for the record he thinks it's crap as well)
BrianB Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 To be honest neither are any good. Tainted Love is up there with Interplay and other youth club 'classics' before we knew any better. Just for the record, Tainted Love was not broken in youth clubs, but at venues such as the Pendelum, Catacombs, The Mecca and the Casino. It may have been played to younger enthusiasts when booted, but it was a record, as Pete says, that helped drive the Northern scene forwards in the early seventies. Too many people dismiss this type of record as "youth club" as through no fault of theirs, they were just too young to be on the scene. I believe this term has become derogatory, and imo shows more about the person classing the record as such, than it does about the song itself. To me its a classic intro, great vocals and a stand out track. The Cliff and EH version of the mighty Tempts is just laughable, again in my opinion. 2

Of course I know it wasn't broken in youth clubs, stop being so patronising, and it doesn't say bugger all about me just because I dislike the song. I first heard it at youth clubs, but yes I know it was being played elsewhere at the time. So what if I call it a youth club record? To me it was a youth club record because until I went to Wigan that's where I heard it played along with many other 'youth club' records, which were better than Tainted Love in my opinion, Barnaby Bye, Kiki Dee, yes even Peggy March. It might be a derogatory term to you, but to me it just means a time and place and it was my first experience of northern alongside many others. I don't disagree that it was a sound that drove the scene forward, it doesn't mean I have to like it or can't have an opinion on it. Apologies to the topic starter for dragging this thread off topic. Bloody hell Matt, it was not meant as a dig at you, it was just to say that in my view, the term YT record means that the person is of a certain age. Not old enough to be at the venues at that time, but was young enough to be listening to the sounds at a YT. If someone calls them YT records, they must have been around 14 to 15 in 73 or 74. I don't like the term personally. That's all I was saying. Best wishes, Brian
Guest Matt Male Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Sorry Brian. Was a bit touchy maybe. As long as we can all agree Joey Delorenzo is still rubbish. (puts tin hat on)
