JOE TORQUAY Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 The Nicky Newarkers Woman A 1976 New York flipside that rose you to become a 70s Rare-Soul dance-monster across the UK & Europe. Little surprise really as the two driving forces behind this session are no strangers to the soulful-Dance sound. Jerry Ross has a long list of 60s dance production to his credit - whilst the main contributor Jesus Alvarez a year early crafted the under-rated bu magnificent “Please Don’t Go” on Vibration Records. Before you today is an utterly impeccable PROMO copy of the type of dance tune that it is possible to make when talent people take to the studio. Ignoring all temptations to bedeck the session with any of the crass disco effects that polluted great soul records of the mid-70s. This is pure uplifting, dancefloor igniting 70s rare-dance, who’s reputation has held firm for over 3 decades.. You may never encounter a finer copy. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 747.00 Alice Clark You Hit Me (right Where It Hurt Me) The things you do when your young… and the interesting way both your own and friends lives pan out. In 1970 when the “Bradford Market” avalanche of USA 45s caused a feeding frenzy, with it’s arm fulls of Verve, MGM 45s and a smattering of records in the quality of The Salvadors etc. it changed the face of Northern Soul over night as The Shalimars, Superiors, The Tymes etc. etc. became “Torch” monsters. Luckily my close friend Peter Kendall was currently at Leeds University, so off to Bradford he went to have his share of the vinyl-free-for-all, when he came home to Melton Mowbray he was armed with two copies of this previously unknown Motown-styled dancer by Alice Clark. Peter wanted a faded Levi Jacket and I desperately wanted Alice.. but I didn’t have a threadbare Levi but I knew a man who did.. My Brother had one, so as he snoozed I sneaked and “borrowed” his jacket - and the deal was done!! “Seen my Levi Jacket Bro?” “Nope..are sure you haven’t left it in the Pub” My Brother had no comprehension of a 17 year old’s vinyl-lust or the lengths a youngster would go for ownership - which I soon found out when I received a thick ear… unfortunately Peter walked in the pub wearing his purloined denim… Ouch ..that was a lesson learned… Peter, went on to head-up MARS-AUSTRALIA ….me, I’m still hanging around Pub coat-pegs in Pork Pie land! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 269.00 Little Hite & Soul Rockers A While Ago C/w Fine Strap yourself in - buckle up! Richard Hite and his Soul Rockers are about to take you on a R&B Roller-Coaster to dancefloor mayhem. Relentless, snarling, convincing Chicago Blues with a driving arrangement. It’ll creep under your skin, dig in it’s claws and never let you go. A R&B Beast of a tune.. Impossibly clean condition & rare in the extreme! needs securing ASAP before some other “Outside The Box” Jock does.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 111.00 Marie Knight That's No Way To Treat A Girl C/w Say It Again This week’s “Black Is Beautiful” candidate is a Wigan Casino & Cleethorpes Pier anthem that became something of Northern Soul Girl-Anthem as the lyrics inspired the ladies and simultaneously packed the floors at both these iconic clubs during 1974 to 1976 then succumbing to a horrid red label Los Angeles bootleg. What pleases me about this offering is not only the euphoric recall the stylus gives us, but also the stunning condition of the vinyl and those striking black labels all of which are impeccable. Last but not least is the then overlooked flipside, that today fits the “BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN” tag perfectly, as Valerie Simpson, Nicholas Ashford & Joshie Jo Armstead composition is givenMarie Knight’s usual uncompromising working over. Looks beautiful doesn’t it… Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 441.00 Otis Redding Early Otis Redding - 4 Track Ep SUE EP’s - oh so collectable! First side featuring his 1964 Bethlehem 3083 release with The Pinetoppers backing up the great man. Two raucous no holds-barred screamers. The flipside features Otis’s Trans World/Finer Arts label release “She’s Alright” when he headed up the vocals with The Shooters. Final tack is the obscurest track on the EP supported by Little Joe Curtis “Gettin Hip” is one of Otis’s hardest 45’s to find as an original. It’s SUE it’s Otis and it’s irrestible! Check out the compelling front cover, the alluring SUE label and the back cover which unusually is free of writing, tears or stains. Lovely clean example and a fine tribute to who many consider the “voice” of 60s Soul. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 87.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted February 26, 2014 Author Posted February 26, 2014 James Brown I Got You (i Feel Good) C/w I Can't Help It (i Just Do-do-do) An iconic Soul Recording that has featured for decades in Soul Clubs, TV Adverts, Film soundtracks and Bars around the world. It after all Soul-Music’s busy man’s signature tune and an eternal spirit-lifter. But to see this most-famous of his recordings as a 1966 British WHITE DEMO is immaculate condition is a rare-thing indeed and an absentee from even the most complete of British Soul collections. To refresh yourself with this ageless classic - click and witness the Godfather at his authoritative best..Spy the sumptuous label scan, we think if you got it - you’d “Feel Good” Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 109.00 Brenda Holloway When I'm Gone + 3 Men are just suckers for beautiful women, ladies who can really sing, works of art and stand-out music. This listing offers all and much more! Record collectors eye-candy does not come any more alluring than Brenda Holloway in sultry pose. Motown non-45 Northern Soul dance tracks like the fabulous “A Favor For A Girl” do not get easily better! Listen to the sound file provided…a dancefloor surefire winner fa’sure. Check out this tempter carefully. Front Cover is flawless Back cover has light writing on it but retains the coveted re-order tag (so often missing from all 60s French EP’s) vinyl has light surface marks but as you can hear it plays clean & true. Labels: A-side label has a light signature on it that starts with a HO and ends in a Y. ??? B-side label is Mint - For me this is a framer - it is Motown-Art at it’s most imperative. But then again for the Motown/Northern DJ, that non-45 track is a killer - ain’t it! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 159.00 Bobby Mac Shy Guy C/w How Was Your Weekend Rare 1964 ORIGINAL press in astonishing condition. Hollywood based Vended Records was a stepping stone for the likes of Jimmy Gresham, Jimmy Conwell , Len Johnson etc to spring from before their later exploits into crafting stand-out Northern Soul. This collaboration with Bobby with Bobby Mac gives up two delicious sides. Top side is a silky-smooth, ahead of it’s time, mid-pace dancer that has been highly prized for decades but suffering a little from it’s own rarity as not many DJ’s other than Ian Clark ever got behind it, perhaps never owned it. In the USA it’s the group harmony supported ballad that is the trophy, so much so it was bootlegged in the 90s. Be assured this is the rarely witness 1964 original in impossible condition, only light sleeve contact blemished on the vinyl and two PERFECT labels.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 334.00 Fidels I'm Giving You Notice Baby C/w Take Away This Lonliness Whilst we’re talking about tunes that should have been monsters but for some inexplicable reason missed the Northern Soul boat. Get your ears around this 1966 Los Angeles underestimated BEAST of a tune. Where shall we start.. so many good things going on it’s difficult to know where to begin it has everything, yes everything required to detonate the Northern Soul crowd! Perfectly paced brass-crammed production offers up right from the beginning a strident girl-group chorus; a wonderful bass male vocal drones away poking through the wealth of leading vocals. Relentless are the blaring horns, and typically the girls refuse to go away, instrumentals breaks - the only thing missing with this 45 is availablity…for as long as I can remember this 45 has always been seldom-seen. Today it cries out for a DJ with a set of balls to play this right in the middle of an oldies set - I think nobody would leave the floor, they’ll just think it’s some Wigan Casino monster they haven’t heard lately. “Get Off your “soap-box” Manship let the tune do the talkin’ …” Like those girl - I ain’t going away till I’ve said the flipside is a cool cut too.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 355.00 Chico Lamarr What Do You Think I Am C/w How About You The genius of Leonard Jewel Smith! Presented here on one of his very rarest associated 45’s giving up not one but TWO formidable Northern Soul beauties, both of which have recently featured in a couple of NS DJ aristocracy sets I’ve had te pleasure listening to. My choice of topside may bot be yours as both are equally distinctive. “What Do you Think I Am” is a mellow mid-tempo exuding elegance and precision on every note. subtle piano tinkles away in the background supporting a gently caressed saxophone and purrs horns to compliment what is a finely tuned vocal. (Allegedly Leonard Jewel himself) that a Sax Solo of pure delight. THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL at it’s slickest, Noting not a girl backing vocal anywhere in the arrangement underling just how good the backing track is - frankly girl intrusion is not required. Flip it over and the production lifts into a feelgood experience with a full male vocal group chorus cradling the velvety “Chico” vocal. Again this is just PERFECT NORTHERN SOUL .. between them, Leonard Jewel Smith & the legendary Arthur Monday craft exacting Northern Soul. Leonard was so pleased with his work, he went on of course to use both backing tracks on other recordings. BUT this is the one to own it - if you can get lucky enough as the condition of this offering is PERFECT. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 913.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted February 26, 2014 Author Posted February 26, 2014 Corey Blake How Can I Go On Without You C/w Your Love Is Like A Boomerang Muscle Shoals..meets Chicago This stone-cold winner is ONLY available as the not even fleetingly available STOCK copy. Take a taste of a composition from the genius-pen of Phillip Mitchell skillfully arranged by Tom Tom Washington, molded together by Floyd Smith and Archie Russell to create Northern Soul Crossover Heaven! Cicero Blake sways and swaggers his way through this deliciously silky production with consummate ease as a bank of strings and neatly pitched wah-wah guitar decorate the arrangement. Flawless Soul music that weaves it’s way into your heart - if that wasn’t enough the original lead side is a Sam Dees composition that if you into the “Island Music” styled ballad you know the quality of this most soulful groove. Two fabulous sides - but if you want TWO sides you have to snare this the very shy STOCK copy. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 555.00 Ballads Butterfly C/w Confessing The Feeling Catch this on the up… 1975 Oakland funk infused dancer, backed up with a precisely constructed harmony stroller of the quality you’d expect from this gifted gathering. Topside is a reworking of Leon Ware’s & Susaye Green’s composition “I WISH I KNEW” released by the Ballads on Venture 6 years earlier. This time the production takes a “Whitfield” styled approach with swirling strings adorned with a dusting of Funk! No wonder this has now attracted the attention of several upfront DJ’s in recent times.. the value can go only one way.. Flipside; the Ballads take Isaac Bolden’s New Orleans Deep Soul masterpiece and stamp their own brand of quality on it, with a rap intro then a silky interpretation develops in an exquisite journey into Sweet Soul. Point on interest is the “Butterfli” release on Balja was pressed the SAME DAY at Monarch Recording as was this Music City offering. The BALJA press is a different mix and in my humble opinion weaker. Stick with the Ray Dobard’s choice to release on this legendary label… Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 60.00 Donnie Elbert Along Came Pride C/w Get Ready Funny how we forget things that have sat under our noses for a lifetime, it was until the most-respected of collectors Mr. David Ferguson reminded me just how good this British production was. Donnie visiting Britain circa 1967 teams up with the prolific Soul-Minded Keith Mansfield to craft a real stunner on the back of a worthy but not superior version of The Temptations classic “Get Ready”. CBS led with “Get Ready” that received some alternative spins on the scene over the years. But wait til you hear the flip! Horns boom the intro then Donnie abandoning his falsetto “Piece Of Leather” style by adding a little depth to his vocal-delivery, perfectly injecting Soul into the impressive orchestra backing…..But for me the real highlight is those screeching ladies hitting the Northern Soul G-spot as flit in and out this very-American n’totally dramatic production. NOT issued in the USA and the condition is glorious throughout.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 109.00 Twisted Wheel Mailshot 21st. March 1969 Original Twisted Wheel Mail Out TWO ORIGINAL TWISTED WHEEL FLYERS Original and ready for framing complete with it’s original enveloped date franked at 21st. March 1969. It’s not often in fact it’s only happened twice in the last 12 months that an auction win has not been paid for. This offering was won over 12 months ago. Hey oh, it gives someone else to adorn there walls with what is a unique offering. How many flyers can still exist in perfect condition, with the original envelope - absolutely none is my guess. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 25.00 Monorays Love C/w You're No Good This 45 had a mild flirt with Northern Soul during the previous century - whipping up quite a bit of interest and demand, then all fell quiet as like so many outstanding tunes they belong to the less active DJ’s or just didn’t reach the sets of the more influential Jock’s. Anyhow it’s obvious monster potential never materialized. Whatever the cause, today I’m hearing a tune that is far superior to many of today’s Big-Ticket spins, and it still carries kudos of real-elusivity. Take time to refresh your ears with a neglected 1965 beauty from New York, that in the right hands will again cause a long overdue dancefloor appreciation. Flute intro gives way to a sublime harmony vocal dancer, that weaves a gorgeous tapestry of soul, blending both strong male and shrill girl backing vocals, riding a persistent dance beat heighten by a strong instrumental break, more flutes are all thrown into another impressive Robert Banks arrangement. Let’s get the right tunes on those decks.. this leaves some of the NS quality control escapees way back in the shade.. Condition, btw is blinding! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 370.00

Jim G Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 don,t believe all you read..........do you really believe sandy golden went for the price stated?......not sure it,s right Curios thing to say, it would infer JM auctions are false which is quite a controversial statement.
