Len Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 what keeps him going. Luckily (for us) I would imagine D.Jing, along with records is well worth him doing (financially)......I wonder if he would still be doing it if that wasn't the case - does he still get 'the buzz' after all these years? I hope so. Len

I'll ask around next time I go 'Up Hanley Duck'! I heard a story about two outlaws called Big Tim and Little Butch who would go to America and rob the rich to give to the poor, or was it the other way round? These bandits would bribe keepers of unwanted vinyl records to part with obscure items for sums as high as 50 cents. Hundreds of dollars changed hands with Americans retiring to live off the proceeds, yes, literally hundreds of dollars. Derelict pottery kilns in the five towns near Stoke were filled with containers full of boxes full of records - a cultural revolution in the Stafford area established these 'unwanted' records actually had two sides, one of which was actually pretty good, extremely brilliant or dazzlingly superb. Apparently these two mellow souls have been nominated for New Years Honours for services to conservation, industry and entertainment... 1 3
Ernie Andrews Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 If you have been on the same bill as him which do you think is worse - Going before him or after his set! I did both at Barcelona some years ago and shit myself on both occasions. What I remember about the weekend was him asking me where he first remembered me from and we sat and talked for an hour and still couldnt find an answer. Was it Wigan/Mecca /Ritz etc WE just agreed it was too long ago to remember! The one thing I did remember was warching him put his records next to the deck. Given that someelse in a previous post said " I wonder about his security" WEll his records were in a broken cardboard box! 2

dthedrug Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 HI ALL...MARK (BUTCH) DOBSON #KING SPINNER from SOUL ON TRENT. A TRUE SOULSTER, TOP COLLECTOR, KIND FREIND. BUTCH is without doubt a TOP Geezer, with huge knowlage of SOUL music,...comeing from Stoke Mark was weened on Northern SOUL surrounded by many mentors from this important town/s. Not sure when he started going to Wigan Casino, although I can remember Big Tim buying records from myself Ady, Mick Smith & Pete Wid however he must at some time, (77 Wigan was full of Kids) many younger people got into the NORTHERN SCENE, & SOME OF THE TOP NAMES TODAY, COME FROM THIS DEMOGRAPHIC, Mark landed up in Mr M's doing a DJ spot right up to the place closed (I think?) It was the mid 8ts that MICK SMITH Introduced me, and for many years we would all meet up at KEELE, selling records at KEELE was a happy time for me, and the regular dealers (Dave * Louise, Mick & myself BUTCH & Big Tim had a corner that become ours) in this period I got to see Mark as a person with humanistic qualities who showed great empathy & positive regard towards under privileged people, in recent times most of my US SOUL 45s I have got from BUTCH, and I can recommend to all SOULSOURCE MEMBERS as one of the best dealers for RARE SOUL, Mark like many friends of mine is kind and sensitive towards my own issues, he belongs to top end of the scene & like Mick Ady Clarky Taffy Randy Johnny Manship Keith Dave Welding Big Tim and all the good brothers & sisters, in-fact he is nearly as good as my mentor MICK SMITH. RIGHT ON MARK (BUTCH) DOBSON DAVE KILWORTH 3

Aye. Can't recall who or what it was but remember the night. Was looking through boxes when the unmistakeable sound of a mat suddenly finding itself being 'played' at 45rpm hinted at a less than delicate on stage manoeuvre lol. Has to be up there in the pantheon of unequivocal, 'live' OVO-related interventions 2

It was at Winsford allnighter, and the acetate was of Walter & The Admerations. Butch walked from the record bar to the stage, took the needle off the acetate, took the acetate off the deck and threw it across the stage, then walked back to the record bar. I wasn't the DJ, but I know who was, but I don't know whether he's on SS, so I'll not name him, but he's not local to Winsford. 5

I remember him running down the hall and leaping onto the stage, I did not think it was Walter & The Admirations though Dave, I thought it was something exclusive to Butch. I think it was Polly that christened it "reverse stage diving" in the following issue of Manifesto

pikeys dog Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Wasn't it the Parliaments 'Rainy Day'? After he'd had his set secretly recorded through the mixer at the Rocket?
sir cumference Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Winsford incident-definitely "You Left Me", May have been other tunes/other times. It clearly shows the integrity of the man. First Class!
Ernie Andrews Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I've done both. To be honest, you just have to accept that you are not going to match him in terms of rarities, but that doesn't mean you can't play just as good, well put together set. I did Ok Dave but even comparing me to you - Your Champions league material and Im playing in the conference so the Gulf between me & Butch is astronomical! I could put a decent set together then but you still know whats coming or gone before and you know how hard its is or gonna be. However the European crowd are less inclined to judge you against the Emperor!
Len Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 If you have been on the same bill as him which do you think is worse - Going before him or after his set! I've done both, and would have to say I'd prefer to be on before him - That way, at least people would stay in the room! Doing so isn't intimidating as such, it's more a privilege, and as long as you aren't 'trying to be Butch', he's quite nice about it. All the best, Len

However the European crowd are less inclined to judge you against the Emperor! I think Len probably phrases it better than me, what I was trying to say is if you are confident enough in your own set being a good set, and you are not attempting to beat Butch in terms of rarity, you can put a set in that will be just as appreciated by the dancers. For consistency over the years though, he's the man, and I don't think anyone will ever match that now. 1

Given that someelse in a previous post said " I wonder about his security" WEll his records were in a broken cardboard box! It all depends on the venue. I've been to big multi room allnighters where the crowd will all congregate just before Butch goes on stage. Then as soon as he plays his last record there's a mass exodus out of the room. The Dj's either side must have been devastated. It never happened when he worked for me. My regulars didn't want me to book the "big" names. He was always brilliant though. 1

spot Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) He's the Shaman of Soul & drives a hairdressers car, it's been said he once smiled but most say it was trapped wind, to me he came into his own once he dropped that Sundance & he's even too cool for Ray Davies who, seeks him here, seeks him there, cos he's a dedicated follower of fashion & the Move saw him, sat watching flowers in the rain, feeling the power of the rain making the garden grow, other than that he's a normal everyday fella who loves Music. Spot. btw. He's a real nice guy as well as an excellent Jock but don't tell him, he'll just get all above his station. Edited February 28, 2014 by spot 3
