I did hear of a Stokie blokie here, with a name like that who had a great collection of Bert Weedon 45's. I'll ask around next time I go 'Up Hanley Duck'! I heard a story about two outlaws called Big Tim and Little Butch who would go to America and rob the rich to give to the poor, or was it the other way round? These bandits would bribe keepers of unwanted vinyl records to part with obscure items for sums as high as 50 cents. Hundreds of dollars changed hands with Americans retiring to live off the proceeds, yes, literally hundreds of dollars. Derelict pottery kilns in the five towns near Stoke were filled with containers full of boxes full of records - a cultural revolution in the Stafford area established these 'unwanted' records actually had two sides, one of which was actually pretty good, extremely brilliant or dazzlingly superb. Apparently these two mellow souls have been nominated for New Years Honours for services to conservation, industry and entertainment... 1 3 Link to comment Social source share

dthedrug
HI ALL...MARK (BUTCH) DOBSON #KING SPINNER from SOUL ON TRENT. A TRUE SOULSTER, TOP COLLECTOR, KIND FREIND. BUTCH is without doubt a TOP Geezer, with huge knowlage of SOUL music,...comeing from Stoke Mark was weened on Northern SOUL surrounded by many mentors from this important town/s. Not sure when he started going to Wigan Casino, although I can remember Big Tim buying records from myself Ady, Mick Smith & Pete Wid however he must at some time, (77 Wigan was full of Kids) many younger people got into the NORTHERN SCENE, & SOME OF THE TOP NAMES TODAY, COME FROM THIS DEMOGRAPHIC, Mark landed up in Mr M's doing a DJ spot right up to the place closed (I think?) It was the mid 8ts that MICK SMITH Introduced me, and for many years we would all meet up at KEELE, selling records at KEELE was a happy time for me, and the regular dealers (Dave * Louise, Mick & myself BUTCH & Big Tim had a corner that become ours) in this period I got to see Mark as a person with humanistic qualities who showed great empathy & positive regard towards under privileged people, in recent times most of my US SOUL 45s I have got from BUTCH, and I can recommend to all SOULSOURCE MEMBERS as one of the best dealers for RARE SOUL, Mark like many friends of mine is kind and sensitive towards my own issues, he belongs to top end of the scene & like Mick Ady Clarky Taffy Randy Johnny Manship Keith Dave Welding Big Tim and all the good brothers & sisters, in-fact he is nearly as good as my mentor MICK SMITH. Aye. Can't recall who or what it was but remember the night. Was looking through boxes when the unmistakeable sound of a mat suddenly finding itself being 'played' at 45rpm hinted at a less than delicate on stage manoeuvre lol. However the European crowd are less inclined to judge you against the Emperor! I think Len probably phrases it better than me, what I was trying to say is if you are confident enough in your own set being a good set, and you are not attempting to beat Butch in terms of rarity, you can put a set in that will be just as appreciated by the dancers. For consistency over the years though, he's the man, and I don't think anyone will ever match that now. 1 Link to comment Social source share

I've been to big multi room allnighters where the crowd will all congregate just before Butch goes on stage. Then as soon as he plays his last record there's a mass exodus out of the room. The Dj's either side must have been devastated. It never happened when he worked for me. My regulars didn't want me to book the "big" names.
