Guest Johnny One Trout Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Did this make the charts? what a great record, I have it somewhere. It most certainly did, a regular play on Radio One at the time as well
Pete S Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Is this the thin end of the wedge? Some great selections there Petey I know what you mean, but I bought all those when they were released, I used to be stacks of 'soul' records before I knew about N.S. If you remember the charts at that time, a good 20% was soul music so we were a bit spoilt for choice back in 70-74 time.
Guest Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 al green - lets stay together holland & dozier - why can't we be lovers DEFO I AGREE! Back Stabbers (love this and Angie Stone Version) Also agree with Pete - loads at there.

Pete S Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 How about this one, a real forgotten gem which just about touched the charts (I sound like Mike Smash) Ronnie Dyson - When you get right down to it
Guest Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Was the Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles a chart hit? I'm too young to know! and what about Chaka Khan - I'm Every Woman. Ain't Nobody's on the radio as I type - and it sounds pretty good Oh Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt and finally Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close (90's though)

If you remember the charts at that time, a good 20% was soul music so we were a bit spoilt for choice back in 70-74 time. It was a great period, like you say spoilt for choice. One i was listening to the other day that sounded great again (Maybe not to you Pete but who knows) from slightly later on in the period Mystic Merlin - I Just Can't Give You Up

One i was listening to the other day that sounded great again (Maybe not to you Pete but who knows) from slightly later on in the period Mystic Merlin - I Just Can't Give You Up I remember that but only the hookline...whats that, 79, 80?

Gene-r Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Not "Born To Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez?? Definitely not Pete! Doesn't go with the handlebar tache, shaven head and singlet top!
Guest Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Sister Sledge - Thinking of You Phew. Just beautiful. I agree, I was dancing to this at Michele and Jack's wedding reception in Greenwich couple of years ago.
Gene-r Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 I agree, I was dancing to this at Michele and Jack's wedding reception in Greenwich couple of years ago. That would have been almost exactly two years ago to the date Karen! I remember bumping in to you on the train when you were travelling there. Elaine and I were invited, but couldn't make it due to friends from Scotland staying over with us. Two years? It's gone really quickly!

Ain't Nobody's on the radio as I type - and it sounds pretty good Oh Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt and finally Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close (90's though) Nights Over Egypt - didnt get the justice it deserved at the time Closer Than Close - thought that was great too. I also loved I believe in miracles - wouldnt mind a few of them myself! That would have been almost exactly two years ago to the date Karen! Pete S Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Sister Sledge - Thinking of You Phew. Just beautiful. Absolutely. I remember the shock horror exclamations when I announced this as one of my all time favourite records a year or two ago. Did you hear Paul Weller massacre it last year?

BrianB Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Mark my words. If some enterprising DJ has the balls to play Mr Magic Man by Wilson Pickett, I guarantee it will become a major floor filler. This is me who said Brazil would score 4 against Japan, and that Italy would beat Germany 2-0. Somebody play it. You'll be on a winner. Think it was on RCA?
Guest Simon Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Shalamaar - Take it to the bank Hazell Dean - Searchin' Shannon - Give me tonight Jimmy Ruffin - Tell me what you want Loose Ends - Hanging on a string Crown Heights Affair - You gave me love Where is the love (7ts or 8ts version) Glen Goldsmith - Dreaming Simon
Guest in town Mikey Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 (edited) In the 70s youth clubs and disco's could be tolerated because at least there were a few good soul records that we could stand around aloof too and pretend not to like because they were in the pop charts, but secretly we'd sing along to if the tune came on the radio at home or in the car. Barry White, all really but especially - My first, My Last. Every Rose Royce, Stylistics, Hot Chocolate tunes were great to sing in the bath to. The Tymes -ooh ooh ooh Miss Grace, The Floaters - Float on. Commodores - Brick House (Only song of theirs I likes). Great thread, but I WAS too cool to like chart records...honest 80s tune Heartache Avenue by some one hit wonder group. Had a real northern Soul feel to it. Edited July 5, 2006 by in town Mikey
