Sorry for them, but true to my eyes. Just like Pharrell, who's only pro to show his "me, myself and I" face since 10 years or so all over the TV's. Now it's been two month since that "happy" got more and more plays on airs and all over and now it's getting a bit hammering to my ears. At first I found it funny to see the barmaid humming to it while serving me my Guiness. Other people a bit into music coming to me about it and me pointing them to listen to the one on Snoozi (to make them maybe realize what a genius Pharrell Williams really is) even if I never liked the Velvet Hammer in the first place. Now I hope no one out there plays this out at northern SOUL (the most important word out of the 2) nights. I hope and pray it's only a too expensive 45 for those DJ's who need to have it on 45 to distinguish themselves (the original is CD though) and play a convenient tune to bring together all those who can't get on a records that didn't achieve "universal" acknowledgment status yet. I may always have been old as such, I never have been into drugs (legal and not), but I always enjoyed music and danced to when it suited me. I have nothing against old or young people tall or small, large or thin... I truly believe that young blood is always needed to keep any boat afloat, but if a critic can't be formulate more on the base of "like or not" but on a dreadful show like the Brit Awards, I mean let's go mainstream all the way if that's the way 4 NS. Remember that first record that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end? They're are kids out there now, finding a euphoria with Northern Soul, some 50 years after teenagers first had it... Now if that's not the magic that will keep this scene going, I don't what is.... A load of back slapping and posh nonsense for bands that produce over-hyped garbage in the main, or manufactured money spinners who just re-work/rip off original records by adding their 'own take' on it (one direction - one way, Robin Thick - blurred lines, Bastille - rhythm is a dancer........all examples of the above and probably got air time on the show at some point). Didn't watch it, BUT just watched the YouTube clip of the Pharrell / Northern Soul hot topic. Is it just me, or can anyone honestly say that outside the soul scene nobody would've have had a clue that they were doing northern soul dancing until he announced it at the end??? You could barely see their moves properly, and hardly any focus on the background dancing at all. Something can't be portrayed in a bad way and damage a reputation if it can't be seen!! People probably think that circle skirts and putting badges on a vest is the new new thing, they will be in top shop (or wherever young people shop) in a month. Guest MrC Posted February 20, 2014 Share Posted February 20, 2014 Well, I came into work this morning, having not been on SS at all last night, truly expecting the whole Pharrell Williams performance to be getting a right slating from all the usual doom and gloom merchants. How refreshing to see that's not the case! I do think most of that is down to Alison posting about how much she enjoyed it so many times though! I also love the song, it does make me smile everytime I hear it, Glad to see, as Chalky mentioned, that Despicable me 2 got mentioned in the reviews of the Brits Perdformance, it is what the the song was written for after all, not to annoy a bunch of over 50 soulies... This made me smile this morning when I saw your post telling us we're 'whiney soul snob bastards' - yet this/we is the scene you claim to love? I get your point, I understand and agree in essence, but I think Kev got it right when he said something to the effect of it's not representative of NS, just a snappy tune with well choreographed dancers in fancy dress, before we get carried away. I saw the performance, liked it. Like the song also. At 47 I'm a spring chicken. I won't say I've got shoes older than you, but what I would say is these old timers pushing sixty are the originators, the creators and I have and have always had a tremendous amount of respect for their knowledge and experience. I am at an age now where how people enjoy it is up to them - perhaps we should just rejoice in the fact that the music is still being listened to nearly 50 years since its creation. One of the things that really attracted me to Northern Soul when I was young was the chance to escape from the squares, and a big part of its continued popularity is (was?) the fact that there was no commercial value to it and so it was never taken out of the hands of the guys who had the passion to dedicate themselves to it, unlike every other "cult" that comes along. It's a crucial part of what makes Northern Soul what it is. Or am I missing something? Having said that, I don't really care if Pharrell has dancers in tacky Wigan Casino fancy dress because, as stated above, it's unlikely anyone even noticed. It's really not worth arguing about. But if this is where the "scene" has got to - 18 year olds with a crush on an overhyped pop performer - then it's all over. That's it. I'm not a moaning old bastard btw. Well, not on this occasion. There are still elements of the scene that are kind of underground, thankfully. The less than 3 minute clip of these young dancers, who had to be in costume for affect, in the background is no big shake. Like I said, Joe Public wouldn't have even noticed them, it was only us eagle eyed folk who showed an avid interest in them. They're young girls & what an experience for them ... I'm not jealous in the slightest (think I would have fainted had I been that close to Pharrell) Good on the girls I say No harm done at all (worse things have happened) They were simply backing dancers, no big shakes, not to me anyway, life is too short to get stressed & wound up over someone else's soul journey. It probably makes you difficult to read for any boyfriend trying to figure out if he is trouble, but that’s another thread This is funny on a number of levels, the main one being though a bunch of people watching a media manipulated mass produced pish tv programme aimed at teenagers and then moaning because a group of teenagers are making them uncool. Hilarous. It also is a poke in the eye for all those guys slagging the young lass that did the video, she is obviously a young kid bursting with creativity, matching that with her weekend passion and its got her a bit of notice, likely short term admittedly, but possibly a kick start to some creative career or even just a few years of ligging and having fun. What 16/17/18 year old wouldn't. And the fact we don't get it, is the point. If we did get what kids are doing with media, it will be because they have left it behind I would imagine. The world is changing, mass media is a part of it, and if nothing else the fact this girl has shared a stage with Nile Rodgers and Pharell Williams shows the power of the modern media. The fact we don't get it, is, I repeat, the point. I just hope she isn't on here in 20 years, reading the 250 obituaries a day about the old boys, moaning about her life being ruined because Pharelll never called, grab the chance with both hands I say. As for the impact on the scene, interesting to hear a few returnees on here moaning about it, another layer of hypocrisy. Is this going to have loads of people running to all nighters, proclaiming I love it. No. Is it going to see the already teeming tea dances, populated by OAPs proclaiming KTF etc etc, talking about the twice they went to Wigan in 1975 before going home to their late night Cocoa at 12.30am. Probably. If you are on any level of the progressive scene why would you care on that. It may slightly impact on Cleethorpes/Prestatyn due to it being easier to take extra tena lady and english breakfast tea hampers to weekenders, but again who cares. The more important question for all the moaners, will it make you get of your ass and get along to Lifeline this Saturday, support one of the proper progressive all nighters left, last of a dying breed, and keep some level of underground/progressive scene alive? And if not why not? Because you aren't Djing maybe, or you have your own night to run/plan. That’s the problem. If people started looking closer to home as to why the real scene is almost dead, then answers are there, or be like me and admit you don't have it left in you anymore! But stop blaming a runaway train that will eventually run out of steam, thats just sidetracking the issue. Maybe this would matter more if I was 20 something and going out every weekend, but I like to think if I was I wouldn't even have heard of the Brits, and certainly wouldn’t be watching it. I would be lying on the couch, still nursing a weekend hangover from having been out, or playing my new records, or running off to phone box to make arrangements for the weekend. I wouldn't be watching the Brits. But that was 30 years ago. Times have changed. Then again I always thought I was cool because of what I was into, until someone much wiser than me then said, if you have to say out loud you are cool, you very rarely are! I now just drink cool gin! PS As usual in the Northern Soul world, noone actually notices the music. Old Pharrell can actually sing. Good luck to all those dancers involved they had a amazing experience that they will never forget. Yes the niter scene needs young people to push the scene forward and we should embrace them . If a bit of exposure on the Brits opens more young people eye's to this way of life that I have loved since the seventies then that's brilliant and hopefully it will be a breath of fresh air. played out oldies to some are brand new experiences to others. Pharrell really appreciated the girls dancing for him as he twice from what I could hear bogged up the Northern Soul dancers some young soulless getting an opportunity to dance on the biggest music event in the Uk which I would imagine would be live tv too. What an experience for them and if it encourages some more of them Soul hungry youngsters I've been seeing about more and more lately then good on them. Thats a a clip to show the kids and grand kids one day Ain`t it a pity that O is next to I on the Qwerty keyboard I've got a 1970 bow saw in original box if someone wants to make me an offer.In Mint condition.
