Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 ...Some of you older Sourcers will remember a time when the venerable Mr. Barnfather was not a righfully respected purveyor of quality 100% black American dance music but - to but it bluntly, a bit of a laughing stock whose playlist was based primarily on whether or not a record had a dance beat rather than for its soul quotient. I'm not having a pop at Sam, believe me I have the utmost respect for him as a bloke and as a DJ. I just wondered if anyone else occasionally had these flashbacks to the mid 70s and to the Bizarro World Sam - and if so, what horrible records y'all can remember him playing in the name of soul (the words "Sandy" and "Nelson" always come to mind for me when this topic does...) If you're reading this, Sam, I'm sure you will take this posting in the tongue in cheek spirit with which it's intended! TONE

Russ Vickers Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Tony, if Martins reading this, its because somebody will have printed it out for him Soul Sam is the man............................we all have our regrets about what we may have played in the past, but Sam has always been good for the scene in at least he pushes new sounds constantly & has the enthusiasm & passion for the scene/music that most should be thankful for. As you know Tony most of the DJ's were playing at least some dodgy pop including Dicky Searling. I appreciate that this is not meant as a knock to Sam.................................but should put the thread into context........................he's played hundreds if not thousands of fantastic soul records & his contribution to the scene has been massive musically. Now lets have a smile at his expense . Russ

Sam is the man, sure, but he's also enough to laugh at his early 'transgressions' and thus I see no reason why we shouldn't laugh , too... TONE

Paul R Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 There were rumours that he covered up Mason Williams "Classical Gas" as "Morning Of The Monkey" But that is actually a great instrumental for guitar & the popcharts!!! Paul

Paul I think Classical Gas must have been played as a new release before it was a hit because whenever I buy a collection off someone who was on the scene in the early days, there's always a copy of it in there

Steve G Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Great record..................................waaaaaaaaalk all over youuuuuuu "Clap" Do you know I was thinking just that on the walk home from the station last night, after posting about Richard playing it. Let's be honest about it - it came at a time when England was in the grip of punks etc "Stab your back" and all that stuff. And I thought "Yeah this was the closest northern soul came to punk rock - just right at the time. As you say waaaaaaaaalk all over youuuuuuu "Clap"

She Devil were a Baltimore Md female group - I have a promotional pic of them in hi cut leotards etc. Sadly though this didn't help them as all of their Charm City Records were attrocious. If you can remember Curtis "How can I tell her" on the same label with the motor bike revs for the intro and syndrums - well She Devil is 1000 times worse.

Sean Hampsey Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 The Bloody Awful "I'm Not Over You" True Image 'Gonzalez' soundalike. Me, Benson & Briscoe nearly pissed ourselves the first time he dropped that heap o' shite at Yarmouth. (Their stuff on Juana... now you're talking!) Mind you, Sam wasn't the only guilty party And over the years, Sam's often delivered the goods! Sean
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Funny someome to mention Happy Cats, i noticed my dad had brought that on grapevine found in someones Northern soul box but to me i thought he obviously not got a clue.
Guest skorpiano Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Sam helped usher in 'newies', many thought he was wrong, but he was, as always, ahead of the curve! The tracks we consider 'modern oldies' today are because DJ's like Sam and Richard had the guts to embrace change and play the great and new (at the time) modern soul! Sam, I'm not sure where you are, or even if you remember me, but you were a part of shaping this scene of ours! Do you remember playing, 'Don Woody-Barking Up The Wrong Tree' all those years ago? Keeping the faith, as always, in Stockholm.
Kev Moore Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Always pestered Sam to play Ernie Johnson 'I Can't Stop The Pain' and he always has if he's carrying it with him Thanks Sam
Mark S Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Cant remember if it was Sam or not but someone played the music from the Gordons Gin advert at the Casino it emptied the floor
