Youyou Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Hello all, I have got a question about Jay Boy records. I have always thought that Jay Boy issued only in the UK. But when I look at Discogs, it seems that they released as well singles in the US: https://www.discogs.com/Doris-Willingham-You-Cant-Do-That-Lost-Again/master/610341 So, is me being wrong about Jay Boy only releasing in the UK, or are the Discogs entries wrong? Might be a beginner question for a lot of you, but you need to start somewhere Thanks a lot for your help! Jurgen
Benji Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 At least he following releases came out in Germany: Jay Boy 1 Doris Willingham (aka Doris Duke) Jay Boy 2 Shadrocks Jay Boy 12 EK Bunch There are probably more I can't remember right now.
Youyou Posted February 13, 2014 Author Posted February 13, 2014 Benji, Hat Jay Boy die Singles in Deutschland selber vertrieben, oder ist das ueber eine der grossen Plattenfirmen gehandelt worden! Viele Gruesse Jurgen And for the ones who don't know German (I was just too happy to write something in German, have left my country seven years ago): I asked Benji whether JayBoy releaesed the singles in Germany on their own, or if they were distributed via another company. 1
pikeys dog Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 At a guess the Jay Boy German singles would have been distributed / manufactured by the same company that did any German President releases.
Jez Bishop Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 (edited) In USA this was Dist. by London (USA). Strange but true (although the 45 you show is pure JayBoy design) Edited February 13, 2014 by jez bishop
Youyou Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 Hello, Thanks a lot for all your help! Take care Jurgen
Kegsy Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I think the explanation here is that, particularly the earlier releases, were made in the UK, whereas most of the later releases after about No 23 were licensed from U.S. labels. kegsy
Benji Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 President Germany releases were pressed and distributed by Ariola, the cat number's 'AT' suffix is the clue. Jay Boy were either pressed/distributed by a major or even a sub-label. The cat numbers don't have the 'AT' suffix so it's not Ariola. Have to check my collection at home to come up with more details BTW, there were two different label designs of the US Jay Boy issue of Doris Willingham. 1
Sebastian Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Jay Boy were either pressed/distributed by a major or even a sub-label. The cat numbers don't have the 'AT' suffix so it's not Ariola. Metronome manufactured and/or distributed these german JayBoy releases: JAY BOY, JB 30.001 - Shadrocks - There Is / Jigsaw JAY BOY, JB 30.002 - Doris Willingham - You Can't Do That / Lost Again JAY BOY, JB 30.003 - Hogs - It's All Coming To Me Now / Motor Cycle Rider JAY BOY, JB 30.004 - E.K. Bunch - Banana / Free 1

John Benson Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I'm sure most people will know, but Doris Willingham later became more well known by the name of Doris Duke 2

Benji Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I'm sure most people will know, but Doris Willingham later became more well known by the name of Doris Duke erm, post #4
John Benson Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Oooooh, I do apologise Benji - I missed that bit. I thought it was strange no one had mentioned it!!
KevH Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 In USA this was Dist. by London (USA). Strange but true (although the 45 you show is pure JayBoy design) Isn't it a London/Jayboy hybrid.? The background being London.?
Benji Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 London pressed and distributed Jay Boy in the US. Two different labels I'm aware of. Both have the 'standard' Jay Boy design but one has the typical cream coloured background, the other one has the multi coloured background known from other London releases.
Sunnysoul Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 That Doris Willingham picture sleeve is a thing of beauty. and it's a great record too !!! 1
Stephen T Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 In USA this was Dist. by London (USA). Strange but true (although the 45 you show is pure JayBoy design) I love that label!
