Guest soul_hull Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 (edited) about six years, i was supposed to be studying my arts degree, but as usual, was more intrested in soul tunes, and managed to combine the two. I was supposed to write about how African Tribal artefacts are taken as 'art' in western society, when in their own societies they may have been, say, religious icons etc. Anyway, to cut a long story short, i thought bollox to that i'm gonna compare it to how soul records are taken out of their original country and danced to in the UK. here's the link, but be warned, it's a proper Uni paper, and to be honest, it's not exactly a lighthearted read - some might like it though... incidentally - it was supposedly picked up by some canadian (i think) publisher for a book, but i heard no more about it - if anyone's seen it in print lerruz know please.... oh, finally (i'm a long winded so-and-so aren't i??? wait til you see this article............) the link below - the guy nicked it!!! I emailed him, and he just went 'yeah, i've nicked it' !!! https://www.geocities.com/jahsonic/NorthernSoul.html it's the bit that starts..........'Northern Soul Music And Culture in Contemporary Britain Through The Eyes of Clifford and Benjamin' edit - typo Edited July 3, 2006 by soul_hull
Soulsmith Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 Well if I was marking the paper I'd Fail it. On the sole basis that nobody likes a smart arse. I didn't read it all, frankly the following line was enough for me:- "It is easy to draw similarities between tribal artefacts and the 'tribal' element in a dance culture (all dance cultures are tribal)" I've enjoyed the scene for 25 years. Its not tribal. Its full of nice people who are pleasure to spend the night with. Convince me otherwise. Discuss. Col.
Guest Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Think your linking tribal to the idea of primitive barbarous peoples, mud huts in the jungle comes to mind! the word tribal is more expansive than that, this is from the Oxford English Dictionary: Tribal: of or pertaining to a tribe Tribe: a group of persons forming a community, a family, a class of persons, a fraternity, a set, a class or group, a number or company of persons, large numbers of persons I personally think that the term tribal fits quite well with the aspects of the northern scene, we connect to a common thread, enjoy the company of like minded people and feel safe and secure in their company and we love to dance on a hot and heaving dance floor, how tribal is that! Proud to be a member of the Northern Soul Tribe
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Hats off to anyone who wishes to write about Northern soul. I had even managed to get a small bit in a college music magazine me and 3 others did. using Richard Temple and a simple wigan badge for pics.

tony_i Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Thanks for having the balls to share. I enjoyed reading it.
Guest rachel Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Well done that man, spread the word is what I say!! .......and Soul-Hull I enjoyed your piece the juxtaposition of records and art and reproductions, interesting. Agree - there are some parallels between the originals/pressings debate and originals v reproductions/fakes in art... only had time for a quick scan through the article but you make some very good points
Guest Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 With your love of the dictionary I'm sure that you could also put up a good reasoned argument for us being part of a herd. Sorry Soulsmith I thought tribal was the contentious word here, herd relates to animals and the article is talking of people surely?
Soulsmith Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Sorry Soulsmith I thought tribal was the contentious word here, herd relates to animals and the article is talking of people surely? To be fair it was a well written piece, although a little too pretentious for moi. Yes tribal was the contentious word here. If you are going to use words like that why stop there? Why not try & include herd? Herd - A large number of people; a crowd: a herd of stranded passengers. The multitude of common people regarded as a mass: "It is the luxurious and dissipated who set the fashions which the herd so diligently follow" (Henry David Thoreau).
Guest Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Herd - A large number of people; a crowd: a herd of stranded passengers. The multitude of common people regarded as a mass: "It is the luxurious and dissipated who set the fashions which the herd so diligently follow" (Henry David Thoreau). when used re' people herd tends to be used in a derogatory fashion as in the quote from Thoreau and I'm sure you'll agree " us lot" aren't common! Let's put the dictionaries away Soulsmith and agree to disagree, I'll get me dict...err coat. Derek

Guest soul_hull Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 "Enjoyed the article. Did you put it up on KTF a few years ago?
