Does anyone know where the label Lakeside who recorded Sounds of black is from? I thought it was Chicago IL, but I also have Maurice Jackson on Lakeside records, but that says New York, NY. Anyone?

There's a few different Lakeside labels from different city/states ... not all soul though

 

Sound of Black is Chicago, the phone number on the label has the prefix 312 which is a Chicago code

 

Not sure if the Maurice Jackson Lakeside is the same label but Jackson is a Chicago artist and have seen it described as Chicago. The NY address is for the distributors ie Avco

Yes.  Maurice Jackson recorded in Chicago, and Lakeside was a Chicago label.  The NY address MUST be only for AVCO as the distributor. As New York City has no lake of any decent size, it doesn't make sense that it would have a label called "Lakeside".  Chicago is on a lake shore, and that lake is the reason why Chicago exists.  Clearly, Maurice Jackson and Sound of Black on Lakeside are both on Chicago labels.  I have no idea whether or not those labels had any connection. I'm sure that The Sound of Black's release was issued well after my time.

Just been looking around and Boba isn't so sure it's the same label, Chicago yes, same label ???

All of these are from Chicago, even if they aren't the same label. Willie Williams on Lakeside also (as mentioned in that thread) as well as a possible earlier lakeside label that has a garage # and a rare johnny sayles title

How many years apart are the 3 different issues?  Remember, that sometimes one owner re-activates a label that had stopped operation for some years in between.  Joe Von Battle did that with JVB in Detroit, and Detroit's Danceland Records had almost 10 years of suspended operation.  But, I agree that all 3 Lakeside Records labels could, potentially have had 3 different owners and could have been unrelated.

There are two garage 45s on the Lakeside label from Chicago, they use two numbers from the Chess numbering system, 1981 and 1982. Seeds of Reason and One Eyed Jacks are the bands. Chess 1983 is by the Wurds, another garage band aka the Dirty Wurds. It's one of the rarest Chess 45s.

So, they must have been distributed by Chess.

that version of lakeside is the one that has the johnny sayles 45, it's also a chess #

Thanks all! Just one last question; any idea of the release year for Sounds of black? 1970-72?

i interviewed them if you want to listen, don't remember if they gave a date.

8/13/2006. really interesting interview, they were part of the touring revue with the pharoahs, lots of black power stuff in the interview
