If an instrumental could ever pull at my heartstrings it would be this one, Junior blows his heart out, wonder what it would be like with a vocal , just a magic tune I've always loved

Wow!

Inspired choice to put an instrumental on this thread.

I've always had a sort of twisted logic that Junior Walker turned a musical instrument into a human voice - and that Otis Redding turned a human voice into a musical instrument. Both with spectacular results. :D

O.K. I just can't resist posting this up.

Patti's tribute to her friend.

And what a tribute . . . . . . . . . . . !!

I like your logic twisted or otherwise, I saw Jr circa 74/76 in New Brighton, memory is a bit sketchy as to whether there was one performance or two as was often the case in those days the one we went to had a very poor turnout so could have been first house, Jr asked everyone to come down to the front and asked for requests, never thinking he would play what was a b side over here I shouted for Sweet Soul and bugger me he played it.Don't know what it was about that area at the time and their attitude to live Soul artists but about the same time I saw Wilson Pickett in a club in Liverpool which sadly was also poorly attended, less than 150 to see the Wicked one supported by Phillip Mitchell.

Exactly the same era when I saw Junior Walker in a club in Brum.

I deliberately went with low expectations so I wouldn't be disappointed - but he was absolutely brilliant. His live performances get mentioned regularly on this forum and I don't think I have ever heard a bad word said.

The lowest attendance I ever saw was James Brown at the Odeon in Birmingham. Likewise I'm sure there was no more than 150 there. But he still put on a good show and I really enjoyed it. :)

Another Motown gem

I spoke to Ivy Hunter about this brilliant track.....he was pleased I knew it. On SDF, a friend of Ivy told me that when Ivy was 'warming up' for a session, he played this tune .

I suspect that it is a very personal song to him. Must of his songs are on the 'sad' theme.....again, perhaps , personal ?

I love this tune

Just read the initial post that started off this thread and it does mention the Joy of being in love, most posts mine included lean towards the pain of love, here's a couple celebrating the joy,

A few odd tracks on it but mostly excellent, the soulful side of Conley. He came to hate "Sweet Soul Music" as that was all that everyone seemed to associate him with. When he moved to Holland the guy he hooked up with didn't know for 18 months that the guy he was living with was the singer of "Sweet Soul Music".

Can understand him hating SSM....

I always loved Put our love together and Let's go steady.

Saw him on the Soul Together concert in Manchester, 1971 I think, Sam & Dave, AC, Joe Tex.....for about 50p  :D

Also as a solo act at Top of the Town...I think he was on tour , promoting They call the wind Maria .I'm sure he was on Top of the pops singing it

Class.

houserockers featuring chuck singleton - peace of mind

First I've heard it by Houserockers, really nice.

Written by Buddy King & Dave Bupp of The Magnificent Men who first put it out on Capitol.

Also very well covered by "The Players", "Skip Jackson", "Royal 5" which are all on the Tube

There's a rare one by "The Executive Branch" on Express which isn't on the Tube but is also very good.

Apologies for not going back and seeing if this has been posted, but this one, along with Walter Jackson's "Uphill Climb", is one of the only two records that can almost reduce me to tears under the right / wrong circumstances.

Believe it or not there is a very good UK version of this on CBS by Midlands group Zuider Zee.

Pete, wonderful record and was giving this multiple plays only yesterday, possibly my fave Manhattans track and there are plenty of good ones. A cut by The Pretenders but for me although  good it don't come up to The Manhattans. As for "Peace Of Mind" didn't know of the Zuider Zee so thanks. I suspect there's probably quite a few others that I'm not aware of.

Seriously Dave, it's good, if you didn't know it was white/UK produced you might rate it (not YOU as in you)

That'll be me then. That did absolutely zero for me, again I think it's because of when it was made, I just don't like this sort of soul music.
