records that you love, that yer non-soul mates think is total ****?

i once played a mate - little anthony 'love's the only way to survive' - he claimed it was the worst record he'd ever heard!! honestly!! some people...

another time i worked in a restaurant, and it was my turn to pick the music - i picked a modern CD which included the naturals (i think) 'da da da da (i love you). great track, but so SOUL, imo, that you have to be a soul fan to like it - if you know what i mean. everyone in the restaurant looked at me like i'd just relieved myself on their grandparents' graves.

i was once designing a website for a VERY arty friend of mine - she likes that 'music' where it sounds like a school band warming up - you know the stuff - Sun Ra and all that krap. She had the cheek to declare what the f*** is this sh*t? when i was playing some soul - i was at home too.

to sum up - i think soul has a certain 'marmite factor'..........and............i think i kinda know that tracks i love are just gonna get laughed at certain people

would be better if members put more consideration into topic titles to ensure readers have a better idea of what to expect. would also help gain more exposure too.

Breaks into 2 musical camps: a lot of my non soul mates like much of the up-tempo and er..funkier side of Soul (their word not mine ) e.g. Benny Harper - My Prayer, Walter and Ads, Mello Souls, Celebrities, Eddie Parker etc go down a storm. Mid tempo stuff or off the wall sounds like say Kell Osborne Quicksand is met with disdain. If I'm to pick one that I like that most mates dislike feedback points towards Troy Dodds, Try My Love.

It's not so much the music they hate though, it's the scene or should I say what they perceive the scene to be.

my mates all love 70s stuff and early 60s r&b and anything that sounds a bit motowny but tend not to get rougher-sounding stuff.

don't think george lemons would pull their chains.

I was in the car with a non soulie and on came Lynne Randell Stranger, he said this aint soul is it, kinda sums it up dont it. :D

...I dunno, Ted, are you being ironic? I've personally never thought of "Stranger in My Arms" as being soul, or anything close to it, just a good little pop tune with a stonking beat by an attractive Aussie bird....
