Ann Perry - That's The Way He Is (Theoda)

Recommended Posts

One of my all time favourite Northern classics - and a record that got me off Motown/Stax and into "proper Northern" as a teenager

Does anyone play this out these days?

If so, who and where?

If not why not - it's top class  :D

Cheers

Richard

Great record.

When it was first played at Wigan Casino it was the instrumental that was played, although later the vocal became popular.

I have not heard it played out for years, probably too fast for them now!  Still I hope someone gives it another go!

Great pair of tunes. Rarely turns up for sale so must be pretty scarce. As it's on styrene, I wonder how many survived the wear and tear of the past? Never seen a Bell stamped vinyl copy yet this is cheaper in the price- guide, a second pressing perhaps? Was a big sound in the 1970's fitting in well with other up-tempo sounds; perhaps it's due for reactivating but it never really went away.

Have probably only seen a couple of the styrene copies with the Circa rosette in the past handful of years.

The vinyl Bell Sound copy turns up more commonly - think the last one I saw was Tim Brown listed one not that long ago.

the Bell Sound stamped vinyl copy is probably the first - it's also has the ARP stamp in the dead wax (  American Record Pressing, Owosso MI - which burnt down in 1972)

the styrene pressing with the 'Circa' distributors badge on the label looks like a West Coast pressing, perhaps simultaneous to the ARP pressing, maybe later. dunno

from what I can see online the 70's UK boot reproduces the look of the styrene version but without the Circa badge - then there's a later reissue that looks like it was done by the label owner at Archer in the late 70s / 80s

The most widely held opinion among collectors and the most well-respected and reputable dealers is that the styrene issue with the Circa rosette is the true and authentic original. There are doubts about the Bell Sound copies. This has been done to death on here in the past I'm sure so suggest searching the forum rather than repeating here.

Going back to the original question, sounds like it's not played out much these days, but when it is it's a popular play, apart from with those folk who are too old to keep up the pace ;-) :-o

I had the pale blue vinyl ARP stamped one off (Hitsville) Chalky who got it off Brad in Detroit and anyone who thinks this is less likely to be original than those styrene ones wants their head tested!  I'm talking about the pale blue labels here - the white ones don't look quite right.

well, they're wrong  :wicked:

I live in Detroit & have never seen a copy of Circa styrene - the ARP / Bell Sound is pretty rare, only seen that a couple times - I think her other record on Theoda might be slightly more common, kind of a Detroit interpretation of 'British Invasion' sounds

I would play it at my local soul-do but my copy is cracked all the way through  :(

Vinyl - Detroit

Styrene - West Coast

not rocket science.

Soulhawk the one in the picture you posted is spot on what you say, this is a 90's reissue done from the masters because the original bootleg was not great quality.

The blue Detroit 60's one is so easy to tell apart from that one.

Melvin Davis penned this song in 15 mins as a favour for Mike Theodore

I keep nagging him to include it in his sets with the words altered to Thats the way SHE is ! He's still thinking about it !

He said the horn intro just popped into his head on the Morning of the day mike asked him if he had anything to fit the (14 year old) young girl !

papa papa pap pow pap pap !

do these 'reputable dealers' just copy everything JM says word for word or something?

Thread is about Ann Perry and if it still gets played, if so where and who plays it etc.

My original question has been answered thank you so I'm locking it

Thank you everyone for your input and thank you to the Mods (presumably) for removing a couple of seriously off topic posts.

Cheers
