kevinsoulman Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 79 80 so it was discovered and released on grapevine in the same year i did not realise that kev
Steve L Posted January 29, 2014 Author Posted January 29, 2014 Thats roughly what I would have said, the reason I'm asking is I just heard someone on an internet radio show claim it was played at Va Va's. Late 70s was my prime time and JB was big then, would have been surprised to find it was played earlier but stranger things have been known
Guest United Sound Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 (edited) Thought it would have been sometime in 78 as I recall Sam playing it at a Coalville Tiffs nighter, and they finished in Aug 78 Edited January 29, 2014 by United Sound
MrsWoodsrules Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Soul Sam was spinning it on the east coast before it got regular spins at Wigan.
KevH Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 (edited) Steve ,that carver/ acetate thingy I've got was done by Sam apparently at the time he was playing it. Edited January 29, 2014 by KevH 1
Speedlimit Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 soul sam late 77 -78 same time as johnny Hampton , delites, johnny hendley, the sharpets, don gardener etc all spun at Cleethorpes alldayers  1
Koolkat Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I thought it was played at the Mecca before 77 by Ian Levine. I can remember it amongst all the new york disco stuff.
Popular Post Godzilla Posted February 1, 2014 Popular Post Posted February 1, 2014 I just won a bet with myself. I guessed that within the first 12 posts there would be claims for Va Va's and the Mecca. Not doubting any of this stuff, although I'm convinced that one night, someone must have taken along a huge box containing ever record that would ever be played in a UK soul club and skipped through the first 20 seconds or so, thus establishing the right to assert first dibs on any tune pre-2012. 5
Pete S Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Soul Sam Wigan Tim I heard this at Wigan and I stopped going before Sam dj'd there, I think Richard might have played it because Alan Rhodes played Brand New Faces 100% sure of that.

Don't dispute any of that Pete, as I bow to your knowledge, however, I know I had this on a mail order Manship tape and was familiar with it before it was ever got played at Wigan (regularly at least) and Sam was spinning on the East Coast at that very time according current playlists in the back of Black Echoes. Although it may have got a one off spin or something before that at Wigan but not by Dickie.

What I was saying about Brand New Faces is that Alan only played it because of the connection to the Jimmy Burns record. Maybe it was Alan who played Jimmy Burns as well. Paul C will know.

Be interested to know mate, but I do remember when it first got 'regular' spins at Wigan, and it had been around a fair while on the east coast by then I'm fairly sure of that. Also heard Sam play it at Llandudno Pier niter before it was regular at Wigan too, although my memory is shot, so might not be an accurate statement, but don't think so.

I never went to any East Coast things at all so I have no idea, never went to Cleethorpes or St Ives, never went down South to Yate, had all I wanted at Wigan and couldn't stand the thought of missing a week! 3

Mostly same here Pete. Me and two mates had a competition going with each other, who would be the first to miss a Saturday night, I went 21 consecutive Saturdays without missing one, had to go on a family holiday in the end, so I missed one, was gutted about that I can tell you. Always followed the playlists in the 'East' when I could though fanzines and Black Echoes, especially SS.
John Benson Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I'd have said either Sam or maybe John Manship at Cleethorpes, around 77 / 78 ish? But off hand I can't be certain. 1
old but nimble Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 B side is excellent better than the A side in my opinion 2

Probably someone will have heard it in the Twisted Wheel in 1969!!! Edited February 2, 2014 by Guest
Soul Shrews Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Im not in anyway trying to say this is how it was but I always remember RIchard SEarling playing Jimmy Burns and Sam playing Brand New Faces Cheers Paul
Koolkat Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Pretty sure this was late 75. Levine at the Mecca. Gonna check old soul mags out. There,ll be some evidence somewhere.
Guest JIM BARRY Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Sure it was played at the marquee in 68.....
Koolkat Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Levine reviews the disc in Black Music mag late 75. Could be oct or nov. Ive only got cutouts in an old scrapbook I kept.
Guest gordon russell Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 When, where & by whom? Mid-sixties......chicago.....jimmy burns? .......how ya doing mate?
MrsWoodsrules Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I'd have said either Sam or maybe John Manship at Cleethorpes, around 77 / 78 ish? But off hand I can't be certain. This sounds right to me. No way was it a regular spin anywhere else before this, then got reg spins at WC thereafter.
Steve L Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 Mid-sixties......chicago.....jimmy burns? .......how ya doing mate? Not bad Terry
Guest gaz thomas Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 mark bicknell at keele in the 80s ....... he deffo made it bigger again, but for me it was the first time I heard it ! AMAZING
Arthur Fenn Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Sam got his off levine circa 78 with a lot of other bits, Alan Rhodes borrowed my brand new faces Cindy Lynn ( yuk ) & couple of other bits bout the same time 1
Guest turntableterra Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 someone mentioned the john henley, was this played anywhere before 1972, as im am sure i heard it at a local dance in carlisle............. stanley, can you help. tom or dave foster at the kings
Rick Cooper Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Ian Levine did a tape for me around 73 or 74 with this on but I don't remember him playing it much at the Mecca. I think he was moving away from 60's stuff. As Arthur said (post 31)Ian sold it to Sam who then made it popular.Rick
Steve L Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Thanks for all the input. So this is another case of a record being around for a few years before becoming known to the majority of people. Maybe the guy who claimed it was played at Va Va was right? Cant discount it completely but I don't think Ian Levine DJ'd there did he?
Guest jkw Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) I agree with Arthur, Sam got it along with Johhnny Hampton and some other stuff when Levine sold-up - As far as I remember he first spun them at a Rose Room Tuesday night session in Burnley sometime in 78' (he's just come from Ian's house) Edited February 6, 2014 by jkw
