Johnny Honeycutt I'm Coming Over C/w If You Love Me

At least twice as many humans have walked on the moon than have found the mythical creature in the wild.

That exhausted word “Rare” does not apply to this Northern Soul Grail. This is only the second time in my life, I’ve been able to offer it for sale. (and I have a feeling it could be the exact same copy Simon Soussan sold back in 1990.)

Considering the World Wide Web has only ever spewed out two copies, one that “Torvill and Dean” practiced their whole career on and the other allegedly having light vinyl renovation.

This offering is a magnificent EX+ copy with two perfect labels.

Rare in this case requires another adjective for a more realistic appraisal.

UNICORN-RARE” “SASQUATCH-RARE” “WALKING ON THE MOON RARE

Mythical Northern Soul that for 99.9% of the Northern Soul family have only ever previously seen in dreams…

James Galt A Most Unusual Feeling C/w With My Baby

This 45 on USA Aurora is an highly sought-after disc in it’s own right. But as the 1966 British PROMO copy it is a rare piece indeed!

Benny Gallagher & Graham Lyle pair up to write for their Town-Buddy creating something that nobody appreciated at the time, as both sides carry a well-constructed vocal-group harmony sound; so seldom heard in British productions, with a bass-vocal occasionally booming out East Coast Doo-Wop style adding depth to the session.

This is smoothly delivered mood-changing UK Northern Soul crafted by a couple of gifted guys who went on to earn an impressive reputation as the duo Gallagher & Lyle.

Do check out the flipside we have all previously passed by - I really like that side too…

British DEMO collecting doesn’t come much-more searching than this..

Tommy Neal Going To A Happening

A timeless Northern Soul that was causing the dancefloor-dash long before anyone in the UK had heard of unparallelled talents of Detroit’s Richard “Popcorn” Wylie, Tony Hester or Mike Terry;

A British release on Vocalion, which Decca kept available on the strength of “shop” orders for fully two years, as the recordingsd reputation swelled as it became an instant favorite within the MOD culture and considered a “Twisted Wheel” theme tune. Still over 40 years later, it still does the business when it comes to cramming the floor.

But how often do you see this Detroit press in these eye-catching clothes.. not often at all… a listing for those of you who chase the all-time NS anthems in their least-seen colours and enjoy startled faces of the turntable-voyeurs

Both labels are immaculate, vinyl has some insignificant light surface marks, but as you can hear it plays perfectly clean and true.

The legendary RED STOCK copy!

Check out that beautifully clean, perfect fidelity double-soundfile of sweet girl Detroit Northern Soul. Shimmering with the outrageous musical quality that laid the cornerstones of the Northern Soul movement.

The classics don’t come any better - in this format and in this impeccable condition, the 45 is as solid a vinyl-investment as you could ever wish to make.

Marvin Preyer Can't Stop Loving Me This Time C/w Climbing Up To Love

Deep Soul fans will think of this artist and draw a sharp intact of breath..after all everything Marvin release during the 60s portrayed despair in love so perfectly. Validated by all 3 recording featuring on the heart-stopping Ace/Kent 176 CD “When A Man Cries”

His “impossible” 45 on “Younger” is considered a Deep Soul Holy Grail, this is not the “Younger” recording but is his 2nd. rarest 45 in near perfect condition.

For those of you who appreciate real-soul soaked with street-level struggle & angst, this 1968 Memphis Larry Rogers project serves it up by the bucket full. But for those interested in the overlooked possible Northern Soul discoveries, the Joe Arnold directed horn propelled flipside fits-the-bill; offering a strong mid-tempo production bristling with NS potential.

Two great sides from a proper “soul” artist on one of the world’s most-collectable labels… a window into a sadly under-recorded but outstanding Soul artist!

Martin Raynor & The Secrets Candy To Me C/w You're A Wonderful One

Very rare 1965 British versions of Motown dance recordings presented as an irresistible RED & WHITE DEMO! in superb condition.

This MOD group’s only single as Martin Raynor and the Secrets, this 7 member team consisted of 2 girl vocalists who are evident throughout as they sweetly replicate the Motown girl back-up chorus. The lead vocal is strong also, with the then unknown Clifford T. Ward also present on the session.

Flip it over and they dare to cover Marvin Gaye’s frantic favourite “You’re So wonderful” and what a darn great job they do of it too.. not too many British attempts at Motown are worth a listen, this one being “The Exception To The Rule” as the interpretation is is such a cool fusion of England & Detroit.

So why only one record from such a gifted gathering?…well they did emerge again in 1967 on CBS as The Secrets; Clifford T. Ward found huge fame as a songwriter & hitmaker in his own right during the 70s..

Willie Mae (big Mama) Thornton Yes I Cried C/w Mercy

This weeks rare R&B offering comes from the unparallelled vocal transmission of the Queen of the “Big Gal” sound! Few if any can match the brutal power of Big Mama Thornton in full flight…

In 1965 label owner Nathaniel McCoy released 3 45s with a lady he described as “The Greatest Blues Vocalist of All Time” a statement that’s hard to dispute as we listen to this California rarity with Willie Mae and her carburetors wide open..

Upbeat floor-destroying performance directed by the prolific Ray Shanklin. A hip n’ Tittyshaker propelled by full-on brass back up, that is easily overwhelmed by Willie Mae’s uninhibited utterly raucous interpretation of Mr. McCoy’s lyrics.

Flip it over to witness Willie Mae’s other side - singing The Blues like no one else can.

Seems most-everything on this label of huge repute is elusive or insanely rare - Nathaniel McCoy stated himself, on some releases “I pressed as little as a 100 copies.”

Love the label, mesmerized by the artist, intrigued about the rarity!

Condition is perfect, in every way.

Gary Sole Holdin' On C/w Swoul Light Touch

Mississpi’s unsung producer of outstanding music, rears his head again with perhaps his most-famous work that became a Northern Soul monster in the late 70s early 80s on the back of it’s one and only significant find by British record dealer Dave Raistrick. a time-served vinyl-huntsman.

Since those golden days of plenty this 45 has disappeared from the market sitting highly prized in amongst the world’s greatest record collections ad DJ boxes.

If like most, you were too young or just missed out on ownership during the late 70’s harvest this copy looks flawless in ever way.

Click the soundfile for a dose of euphoric-Northern Soul-recall, as late Wigan Casino & Stafford “Top Of The World” coming flooding back..

Kellie Evans & Don Albert What We Gonna Do With This Feeling C/w Too Cute

SO RARE! At first in the 80’s thought at first to be 12” only! Here’s is the now so seldom seen later discovered 7” 45, giving up two totally conflicting but immense dance recordings.

Top side is a lush saxophone decorated soulful-stepper, hugely classy, massively soulful showing off two superior vocals bouncing of others plainly visible desires for each other, then comes a sax break of infinite quality.

The whole thing is just a melting excursion into 80s soul… awesome!

Flip it over for a relentless dance production that the “Boogie” fans just adore as this too offers up powerful vocals from the handpicked cast from “Crack Stepping”. Full string section backing, and a persistent dance rhythm lift this side into the quality 80’s dance league.

Two fine fine sides in it’s rarest form, rarely comes to market but offers so much for the Soul DJ.

Minits Still A Part Of Me

The years between 60s Soul and the disco-boom were filled with some of soul’s finest sessions, abridged with what is termed “Crossover” Northern Soul..so what better town to find real Soul than Memphis?

Sit back and feel the thrill of the classy productions this period gave birth to.

The industrious Dan Greer a Bluff City studio name of huge-repute guides a orchestra backing, with Buddy Skipper arranging a rich strings and a bulky horn presence, all that is needed now are some highly honed vocals to match.

Step in, a gathering of girls who’s bewitching vocals perfectly fit the atmosphere.. crafting a very special tune indeed, totally immersed in soul and shimmering class..

If that hasn’t sent you diving for the “Bid” button, the flipside is only a note behind in quality… for real-soul collectors and those DJ’s who want their sets to be remembered.. this 45 has everything..

Rare Crossover Northern Soul.. Phew.. don’tcha just adore it!

Bill Brown Bip Bam (thank You Ma'am) Part 1 & 2

Pre-Disco era Los Angeles FUNK!

Slowly but surely this urban-slab of FUNK expands itself into an authoritative hammond propelled dance tune, as the recording unfolds more and more intricate arranging comes to the fore; So much so I personally prefer the flipside laced with jazzy keyboard work and only sparse vocal interruptions.

Incredibly rare 45 from rewarding streets on Inglewood.. an area which has given up some fabulously rare Soul 45s in it’s history.

Be sure to check out this Forceful-Funker that will creep under your skin revealing it potential as ideal Club-fodder for those hungry to feed the New-Breed Northern Soul Funk scene.

August Moon Wasted Years C/w You're Together Baby

Seems like another lifetime since I’ve seen this 45. Then an internet listing in horrid condition reminded me of just how darn good this “yet to make it” candidate for Northern Soul stardom is.

Back in the early 70s it was the throbbing “You’re Together Baby” that caught the DJ’s attention, but sadly got swamped and lost as the plethora of Northern Soul discoveries buried it for decades to come.

More recently it is the delicious mid-tempo side “Wasted Years” with uncanny Detroit influences. But this is no Motor City creation, it’s an hybrid from Richmond, Virginia and New York.

So who crafted such a thing of beauty..?

Step forward Richmond’s Mr. Wiggles “August Moon” the driving force behind Little Tommy, Dickie Wonder etc. on the “Sound Of Soul” label and New York’s producer of huge renowned Robert Banks.. little wonder this is one special disc..with these two doyens at the helm.

Bursting with potential no matter what side you introduce the stylus to..after sleeping for far too long this begs DJ ownership.

this copy, as you can hear and see is a totally flawless Mint - / Mint -

Jerry Williams If You Ask Me (because I Love You) C/w Yvonne

When we revisit these classics with fresh ears, the realization of just how entirely wonderful these Northern Soul presentations were hits home; so much in fact most people can remember exactly what year, month & club they first heard them at.

From the very first play this record pierced the hearts of the young becoming a instant “Torch” favourite. For me, I first heard it when one of the Stamford boys brought it to “Kirby Lane Youth Club” in Melton Mowbray, the same night Trevor Hurd brought in a copy of “Lenis Guess” for an airing. From that evening Trevor was christened “Lenis Hurd”, the soul boy from Stamford name is now dissolved from my memory….

…Unlike Jerry Williams who’s debut in MM was a hairs on the back of my neck erecting experience… it was moments like that, that pinned us to a lifetime of seeking the “rare sounds” with the power to induce that feeling.. little known to me or my friends, there were 100’s if not 1000’s feeling that exact same thrill across Britain, each time, the now iconic intro boomed from the speakers..

This was then and still is now LIFE CHANGING NORTHERN SOUL ….

I was playing the willie mae thornton 45 last night at home with some bass

I really like the simple but powerful traditional style of R&B on this 45.

I think its great that he still puts many obscurer and interesting things on this auction.

I totally agree - John's auctions are always a great mixture of styles and items ranging from undeniable rarities and top class oldies that always command high prices, right though to obscure, very different and barely-known things. While he definitely gets very decent prices most of the time, it obviously isn't price alone that determines whether something is on the auction - but just mixing things up and making sure each week has a range of stuff - including price-wise.

The other big NS auctions out there just seem to focus on big-ticket items.

Cheers

Richard
