Does anyone know which of these 45's was released first?

Ballads - Butterfly / Confessing The Feeling - MUSIC CITY 897

Ballads - Confessing A Feeling / Butterfli - BALJA 1001

Thanks in advance.

I think the music city releases are probably first. They had an earlier release on music city in '75 and butterfly came out also in '75. The first balja release "butterfli" on 1001 is from '75 and the second release wait / your love (1002) is from '76.

Also on Venture Records(MGM) but with title change something like "I wish I could" great song that I used to play all the time,

sounds very much like David Ruffin! to me, not got the disc handy but I think it was written by Leon Ware....a class tune!

Taken of facebook by John Mnaship:

1975 Oakland vocal-group soulful dance, that is starting to get attention from the DJ's!
two different releases MASTERED & PRESSED ON THE SAME DAY @ Monarch Recording Los Angeles and ironically two DIFFERENT mixes.
For the vinyl-anoraks Music City (longer version) was the first off the press by what must have been just minutes...(consecutive delta numbers.. how strange)

Big thanks for that info. Indeed very strange! Seems to have been planned for both Music City and Balja at the same time.

I hear that the band were more than a little surprised when it appeared on Music City. Suggesting it was done as a custom pressing by Ray Dobar, and he decided to take a little share for himself.

Are the mixes of both versions of Butterfly the same? Has anyone got both copies to compare?
Thanks,
Dave

Same take but different mixes and apparently matrixes are also different. Here are two sale posts with soundclips from actual records for sale. First on Music City and second on Balja.

There is no difference is there apart from the length?

There are differences real ; the wah-wah guitar beat is less dominant while the strings rule on the Music City and the singer is upfront with less echo overall than on the Balja wich IMHO sounds less bodied or rather empty like a "stereo" version. But all of that is maybe not so important for some. That wich I can understand, even if to me and some others it's somehow relevant even if not of the first importance like a matter of life or death. BTW, the real lengths are about the same according to the Youtube soundclips.

Did the LP Ballads From The Ground Up ever get a release?  The Balja release of Butterfli says from the album?

I found the credit of their "The Ground Up" LP on the Balja single and sent a letter to the Balja label in 1977 asking if this LP has been released.  Few weeks later, I received a reply letter from the Ballads directly and saying that the "The Ground Up" LP has not yet been released but they completed enough recordings to make the LP. then they asked me to buy those recordings in order to release their LP.  Unfortunately, I did not have enough money to buy the recordings at the time.

In late 70s, Japan Vivid Sound contacted me and said that they want to release their LP in Japan if I do not mind.  Of course I did not mind at all and gave their address to the Vivid Sound.  In 1980, their LP "Confessing The Feeling" was released by the Vivid Sound instead of "The Ground Up".

Tracks of the LP are:

SIDE-1

1.WAIT

2.WHERE WE GO FROM HERE

3.CONFESSING A FEELING

4.THREE TIMES

5.YOUR LOVE

SIDE-2

1.DAMAGING

2.DON'T TOUCH THE DIAL

3.TRAET ME LIKE YOUR WOMAN

4.DIZZY WORLD

5.WHAT WILL BE, WILL BE

In 2007, this LP was also released in a CD format from the Vivid Sound by adding "Baby, I'm For Real" on the Kimberly label and some unreleased tracks they made recordings in the 80 -90s, totally 16 tracks.
