Sometimes aghast at the lack of sales of quality £5 / 10 pound tunes in the Soul bracket - But on the other  hand some private Ebay sellers seem to make a decent killing on tailor made carvers - This one example does quite well and charges £2.99 postage for a 45 - Myself £1.60 , and I still get knocked down on ratings at that price.  Really it defies description sometimes who buys these 45's ?    Are some of these worth re - pressing - Looking at the completed prices it would appear so  - as Ian Levine stated ' The Strange World Of Northern Soul '   -  you could not make this up....

What I can't understand is someone bidding £15 on a carver of The Vel Vets when they could buy it on Pye for a tenner...there are about a total of 30 bids for cuts of Crazy Baby...madness

perhaps somebody is trying to collect the full set of Soul Wax 45's, and the higher prices are for the rarer ones they haven't got yet  :D

And every time he thinks he's got a set, another 5 get "released"

They could just contact the seller and ask him to make them a set

It's scandalous and has been often covered on these pages, also in connection with this seller.

In fact on one occasion a couple of years ago, Soulsource Admin admonished me for raising it since

they regarded it as futile.

The bottom line is that if Universal Music can't be bothered to pursue the matter, then why should anyone else care.

They must still have agents and contacts with the scene, that must be aware of the copyright breach.

Ebay themselves have a form to report such matters with, however it has to be faxed to them.

surely if you had a carver machine then you would be pressing out the rare titles that have not been booted instead of the bog standard top 500 already bootlegged oldies ,  getting top money , only listing one copy then offering other copies to the non highest bidders

Hi Glyn

I'm totally with you on this one, can't for the life of me think, why (a) someone wants to buy these tracks when they can dig out a legit copy for about the same outlay and (b) who are these people buying them? Hope they not newbies to the record world and thinking they getting something special/rare?

Having a carver of an unreleased track or a CD only track I can understand, but this is beyond normal reasoning. Can under stand the sellers reasoning , he's making easy money and suspect (who ever they are) must have his own machine for knocking them up as carvers aren't cheap to have made!

Besides being illegal (akin to bootlegging), the only way of stopping it, as Ebay doesn't seem to want to know, is to shop them to the record/ label owners. While it might be small potatoes to most, I am sure they would take a very dim view of it, if not put the legal eagles on the case.

It has been bad enough hearing the stories from artists over the years being fleeced by label owners (large well known ones and indies) with legit releases and not receiving any royalties  but this is the pits.

Does anybody know who they are?????

Ahhh I know the answer to that Pete……Carvers are disguised to look like acetates / test pressings etc. with the addition of a paper label. Looks better than a Pye Disco Demand 45…..to the unsuspecting casual eye. Seen a well known DJ do this and try to get away with it. I could tell because the decks were at eye level and you could see they were all carvers with stuck on studio labels, Bell Sound, Virtue etc….even on West Coast recordings…So an easy substitute for so called DJs who can't be bothered to put in the leg-work…..
