you probably know this steve but I have the renaldo domino on an original twinight 45. numero didn't know it was actually released at the time they reissued it.

 

OMG yes, I'd forgotten you had that on an original 45....Nice one!

 

In the annuls of rare soul records that's got ot be up there with the usual suspects.

It's refreshing to see so many new and recent new releases getting a mention  but how many of them are getting anywhere near the extensive airplay they deserve out on their respective scene's A

A gem of a record that's yet to see plays in the more well attended upfront venues, news is that's soon to change.

Incredibly the new (forthcoming) Sharon Jones album hasn't had a mention. As far as straight up northern cuts 'Stranger To My Happiness' has that immediate, familiar sound that could bring it some action (might need a 45 release though  :rolleyes: ) The album is rock solid - strong mix of deep, funk, northern, and R&B - pretty much exactly what you'd expect.

Jason on the "not out yet" front we could also include De Robert & Half Truths next album  - sure to be a good track or two on there.....Out Jan 21 I believe....

I totally agree Rob and the guys at Numero do a great job. They dig deep them selves plus have a wide network of peeps that help them. Along the same vain Nev I'm sure you'd want to big up Soul Junction who do an equally great job.

 

As for Kirsty's offering of Fourth Level, unless more copies have turned up and she knows something I don't, there just aren't enough copies around for it to go big this year. As far as I know there are 4 real vinyl copies on 3 continents and not all with DJ's. I have a copy, but the other three I believe are with collectors and the reality is that I don't play out enough to really make that much impact on any record. It might become a hot topic this year, a swapped soundfile etc, but a big record, ie the general punters paying on the door, kind of known, don't think so.

 

Think there is always a danger of this thread becoming 'I know something you don't know' a form of elitism. Where as I thought the thread was about records that have been known amongst a few collectors breaking through to being really popular.

 

 

When is their long awaited Cash compilation coming out Dave?

How about this 60's stormer...Charley Wynn - Action Time on Jim Gem.

 

Not too easy to locate and not aware of it breaking out from being a collectors disc (flipside is Deep Soul), but it has progressions and vocal harmonies not a million miles away from "Jeanette" and "Man Oh Man" in places...take a listen:

HNY buddy...well I certainly dont, & I also enjoy a lot of different genres of soul music, so find myself attending different types of Soul Nights & events other than just All Nighters (like many on SS)...

 

However, traditionally the back bone of the Northern & Rare Soul Scene, has always been All Nighters, I think that its a reflection of the current All Nighter scene, that there are very few tips that would be suitable for an All Nighter posted thus far.

 

I appreciate that there will always be folk who want to keep thier current hotties to themselves instead of posting them up all over the internet, I also appreciate that few of the Dj's I would consider to be the top Nighter DJ's have posted, but I think the tips so far, on the whole, are more from a Modern, Crossover & collectors perspective, as opposed to anything that 'fuel' an All Nighter.

 

Non of the above is intended to be critical, the selections once we got going are very good, but I was making an observation, that I think reflects the lack of dancers suitable for an All Nighter.

Truth is, nowadays all the big traditional 60's Northern dancers are only really being discovered in the vaults on unreleased tapes then being released by the likes of Kent etc.

Its nice reworking of "I Wish I Knew" on Venture, but IMO not as good. So I'd also like to sing the praises on this one as well.

Your correct John,i have /like both 45`s but for me they took the song to another level in the 70`s .Feel there an artist that haven`t have there day yet to a lot of collectors. :g:

I would also add my Judy Freeman & Black Rock Cover, which I've been playing for a few years now.  Don't think it will remain under the paper much longer this year, due to another copy surfacing recently, but a great tune none the less -

A couple of nice and soulful midtempo things that could certainly use a little more action!

 

First up, Inell Young's 'Ive Never Considered' a lovely slice of New Orleans followed by a gorgeous Impressions sounding Chicago group sound from the Dontells!

the flip is a great uptempo funky rnb thing that deserves a few spins too

Another fab Soulful 45 on the iconic King label 

 

If I were a DJ, this would be in my set at the moment cause I love it.

I tried with both Inell Young on Busy-B and the Regina Sherard some 20+ years back but to virtually no response so good luck with'em, they are both great records, some of the others listed here I'm not too sure about.

and a really good 45

 

its not a tip for 2014, cause its been popular on the mod scene for years

 

but is it one that could go massive on the soul scene ?

 

I think it is a strong 45, I would play it anywhere

Ernie Shelby - Right Here Where You Left Me - Polydor

James Govan - Wanted Lover - Fame

Paul Vann - Soul Children - SS7 (I love the guitar)

 

The "Ernie Shelby - Right Here Where You Left Me" is a real early doors track for me John It's got to be the top side "Ernie Shelby - Carry Me" (Polydor 14124) 1972 much more of a dancer, again sorry but again not showing the topside on Youtube?

Modern Soul Summer Hit 2014 ??? Not for everyone I guess but it goes down very well whenever I have played it :hatsoff2:

 

 

 

 

One of my 70's soul faves at the moment... It has been played by the more upfront clubs over the last few years but it should be a top 500 play :elvis:

i played the flip on my best of 2008 show. one of the best sweet soul records and it's a gospel record...

 

Took me til 2013 to actually file a copy of this 45, Bob....tough to find, even harder to find clean!

Loving this over the last few days, from the new DeRobert & Half truths LP "The Dole Pt 2". Whole LP superb but this got my immediate attention and feet moving instantly. :)

 

 

I also think I need a new Mac, as threads like this (great as they are with all clips and things) takes sooooo long to upload each page! :elvis:
