Popular Post Sean Hampsey Posted January 2, 2014 Popular Post Posted January 2, 2014 Hi all, Well, its that time of year again It's 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, which started in 2007, here we go again! Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers. You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet! You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months. It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves. It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster! We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' Whatever floats your boat! With increased diversity around these days, this should be an interesting list! How about those funky groovers. Are they now providing a rich new seam of quality music to add to the Northern playlists? No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year! So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2014. Oh... and a Happy (and Soulful) New Year to all! Sean Hampsey 4

We've always managed a 100 or so in previous years! As a quick lookback, here's what folks came up with the first time we did this in 2007. Did any of them make it? Sean Make it? Most had made it many years before. I can't believe most of the 2007 list was suggested, most were oldies and had been played for years. Unless you were new to the scene in 2007 you would have heard them. Those that weren't regular plays was probably because they weren't good enough. 1

Those that weren't regular plays was probably because they weren't good enough. Agree Chalks. Its always surprised me what people put forward as tips for the future, when clearly they've been and gone in other parts of the country, or on other parts of the 'scene'. I guess that's down to both the diversity in music and the various strands in the UK and beyond. We don't all know it all these days... at least not at the same time :0) Picking up on Steve G's point again, is it felt that the Modern & Crossover scenes can often be a breaking ground for the wider 'Northern' scene? Tell you what though, a bit quiet in here tonight. SS Members normally have no problem making recommendations. Here's my recent tip anyhow. Soulful midtempo I've played for a while now that deserves broader acceptance. A previously unreleased Chess / Muscle Shoals track (only Vinyl imprint is Japanese). Bobby Moore 'Can't Get Away'. Popular Post Cunnie Posted January 2, 2014 Popular Post Posted January 2, 2014 Right then,This has been one of the most popular threads of mine & I'm sure many other members too over the last few years so it's a little bit upsetting to see it getting ripped to bit's like this so I'll try my best to (hopefully) get it back on track. My first tip, might be a bit controversial & is definitely not one for the purists but I bet it will be massive on the dancefloors if anyone has the balls to play it. It's a remix of Billy Stewarts Summertime by Smoove & before anyone say's how dare somebody remix this don't forget Billy's version is in fact a cover version. Also it's available on 7" vinyl if formats make any difference to you.https://soundcloud.com/stevenmoove/summertime-smoove-rework Now did I mention cover versions. My second tip is another 'marmite' track. It's a cover version of Millie Jacksons House For Sale. Now I know what you're thinking, Man's gone mad but I actually prefer this version from New Zealands Mark Williams to Millie's original. Just listen to the sax break half way through it - To die for IMO. Also quite scarce as it only got released in New Zealand & the odd few that were out there have now been snapped up. Also know it's a favourite of Stevie G as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTgpeij3dU0 Third & lastly up is something that has been massive on the Modern scene for the last few months but it's been rumoured that a 7" edit will be surfacing soon. Here's the 12" version from the governor, Frankie Knuckles featuring Inaya Day.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M0F12lDZFc 5

Popular Post Sutty Posted January 2, 2014 Popular Post Posted January 2, 2014 https://youtu.be/R6Qjbxzl99Q back in ye oldene days when I was foolishly booked to play records to an unsuspecting public, this was something I spun occasionally and people danced. I've done my research and nobody has ever mentioned it in this forum and there is no googleable content of any other claims to it being 'massive' anywhere. It's a cheap LP on Buddah, and I think it's got the longest title of any record I own... 'God has blessed our hands... A musical tribute to a people's struggle for equality'. And most bizarrely, he's got Rance Allen playing guitar and not singing on it. so there cheers Sutty 6

Because its a debating forum and if i want to comment I will do so. I was simply passing comment because the choices were surprising with a large majority of the 2007 list being well known at the time and had been for a lot of years, many for 15/20 years plus, if you don't like that then tough sh*t. You are as patronising as anyone at times on topics on here.
