But let’s turn our focus to a masterpiece hidden on the flipside. This is not BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN it soars far and beyond BB HEAVEN into a previously uncharted waters of the big production… just genius!

The gentle start gives no indications of how this gargantuan is gonna swell and ejaculate all manner of soul-greatness into your lap. Sidney’s low groan expands into a snarling growl as he follows the arrangement from one peak to another even higher range. I used to love playing football most of the time - except when to town-thug pulled his boots on, with no aim other than to tattoo his studs to my shins. This torment from the soccer-guerrilla, went on seasons and seasons. Then when neither of us had the bodies to continue - the torture continued every time we met in public; he would tell vivid stories of his short-stubby body terrorizing me with his wildly aimed maiming tackles.

Levi Jackson This Beautiful Day

Thumpin’ Blackpool Mecca, Catacombs & later Wigan Casino classic that never got issued in the USA.

1970 there was strange happenings at EMI as they seem to catch on to the fact that Solomon King’s - This Beautiful Day - has potential as a SOUL release.. so fully 131 releases after it became a failed follow up to “She Wears My Ring” it appeared on the Friday release sheets once again

So an EMI “somebody” had the foresight to release “This Beautiful Day” and re-credited it under the pseudonym “Levi Jackson” now that is some bold-soul christening. Possibly with Levi Stubbs & J. J. Jackson in mind..who knows?

But this crafty move to capture the burgeoning British Soul market failed worse than the first release. Before you is the infinitely elusive black STOCK copy which in our experience is rarer by the sum of 5 to 1.

Darn hard to find - and this copy is in showroom condition.

A funeral paced Southern Soul experience featuring a twangy blues inspired guitar intro and a dragging the depths of despair vocal partnered by a subtle background organ whirling perfectly to enhance Felix’s hopelessness.

As Deep Soul goes, they don’t come much rarer than this.

Flip it over the team pick up the pace, lifting spirits with a primitive mid-tempo Northern Soul stroller. Again the keyboard player in prominent in supporting the still unhappy lead vocal.

18 or so copies of the Trips 45 were found in a load of records that belonged to a long deceased long time record hoarder who moved from Los Angeles to Springfield, OR. The conditions ranged from "M-" (the person who bought the collection grade, I didn't see the copy) to good playing VG. I got one of the VG ones for $300.

Hello George. If you are referring to the ones that were on ebay last year, they were very dodgy indeed. In fact we had a discussion about them on here, and the best conclusion was that they were re issues that were done from the original stamper for the "There's that mountain" side, but the label owner had lost the stamper for the other side and they used the alternate [inferior] b side instead.

Yes, that's right, thanks for telling me. I didn't read the part in the auction description about the "Moderized" side. The copies found are not Soussan boots though. The load of 45s included test pressings of the Trips as well as test pressings from other 45s of the same (mid 1960s) vintage all done through the RCA Hollywood plant. IMO the copies found are 1960s vintage but probably pressed shortly after the first pressing that JM sold. The mastering on the two sides is much different in volume.

Yes George, if you examine the 45 you will see that the "there's that mountain" side is stamped, but the "love can't be modernised" side is just scratched in the run out. If you play the "love can't be modernised" side the sound quality is very poor, and is the same version that was booted on the soultown 45. 

 

This was not in the ebay description. I only found out when I bought one. I thought it was too good to be true, and it was.
