JOE TORQUAY Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Trips There's That Mountain C/w Love Can't Be Modernized A Northern Soul 45 that enjoys legendary status after spending most of the 70s as an All-Nighter Monster, which ironicaly hardly any of the most prominent DJ’s of the era ever owned, until it was honored with a SS California bootleg. Before you today in the insanely elusive ORIGINAL with a machine stamped matrix. The equally impressive flipside which has in more recent times rose into most-wanted category of it’s own, with a more subtle mid-tempo “Crossover” style of vocal-group Northern Soul. (note 1st. mix 101 - A) Not many 45s can boast such quality on two sides & strut their rarity for over 4 decades and actualy debut this now 15 year old auction. So click the soundfile and listen to the depth of studio skills this 45 bristles with, Jimmy Conwell, Sir Hank Graham & Codoy Colbert are in inspired form. NOTE: This copy has light surface marks and light wear to the label. But is every note a very worthy auction listing, as so few collectors can boast ownership. Listen to the double soundfile lifted directly off this disc, and carefully view the time-served labels.. we still think it’s a rather special listing.. don’t you? Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 1,328.00 Barbara Lewis The Many Grooves Of: The lady that made grown men cry, during her performance at Cleethorpes Weekender. (me included) So when the Sax-God Mike Terry joins forces with Ollie McLaughlin the sublime vocals gifts of Barbara Lewis are given the fine detailed attention they demand, we are treated to Chicago session of infinite quality. Check out the random soundfile selection underlining just how “stand-Out” this album is and such a fine tribute to one of the most-accomplish Soul-Sisters of all time. So I’ll leave the most important reason for ownership of this album until the last; it includes the LP only track “THE STARS” totally perfect Northern Soul you could wish to experience; so it had to received a late 90s 45 release on the British Horace’s label. No matter how outrageously majestic “THE STARS” is, this LP is so much more that just that one track, no matter how superior it is…listen and enjoy one of the “GREATS” at her work. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 79.00 Sidney Hall The Weekend C/w I'm A Lover SHRINE TIME! Lets start the New Year as we intend to go on - bringing you RARE SOUL in fine, fine condition. This is a flawless copy of one hellish elusive 45 in this most-wanted series. We’ll kick off with the A-side - a typically potent SHRINE recording with full orchestra arrangement, shrill Girl-Group chorus elevating at every opportunity the horn crammed arrangement, fine D.C. Northern. But let’s turn our focus to a masterpiece hidden on the flipside. This is not BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN it soars far and beyond BB HEAVEN into a previously uncharted waters of the big production… just genius! The gentle start gives no indications of how this gargantuan is gonna swell and ejaculate all manner of soul-greatness into your lap. Sidney’s low groan expands into a snarling growl as he follows the arrangement from one peak to another even higher range. Kettle drums, horns and some madly possessed girls endorsing Sidney’s lead, with shrieking-soul approval. For me Beat Ballad Utopia does not get any better than this.. AWESOME brilliance on a flipside - that’s SHRINE for you. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 925.00 Ronnie And Robyn As Long As You Love Me (i'll Stay) Without question the most popular most-requested Northern Soul classic of the moment - And this rare stock copy is utterly FLAWLESS Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 262.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 Willie West Willie Knows How Stand up! Willie West is about to send you a convincing message that he knows best. You just can’t argue with such pure-power! As Willie’s whiskey-worn tonsils snarl out his message, prompted by blaring Louisiana horns to carved out a compelling fusion of Blues/Popcorn & Soul. The MOST IMPRESSIVE Record I’ve found this week - I’ve hardly stopped playing it - it has MONSTER room-shaker guarantee written all over it. Listen and imagine the effect this will have on a full R&B appreciative dancefloor.. you won’t have to think to hard… and it’s RARE! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 287.00 Danny Woods You Had Me Fooled C/w My Love Will Never Be The Same Oh Yes! Proper Northern Soul - no frills, no pretension, no niceties - just hard-hitting reprisal-driven Detroit dance-soul. It ripples with anger, as Danny Woods spits out the lyrics revengeful at being “Fooled” as a crew of girls try and calm the session with shrill harmony chores. But Danny carries too much pain in his vocal for the atmosphere to be quelled. A Cult-Classic for those who seek the harder-edged recordings…this just ticks all the boxes, even the instrumental break carries a retribution feel to it. NOTE condition: and this 45 is very hard to find in acceptable condition - this copy both sides of the vinyl are MINT - aside label as X X on it flipside (also a killer tune) is perfect. Find a better one if you can! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 463.00 C L And The Pictures Baby Not Now I used to love playing football most of the time - except when to town-thug pulled his boots on, with no aim other than to tattoo his studs to my shins. This torment from the soccer-guerrilla, went on seasons and seasons. Then when neither of us had the bodies to continue - the torture continued every time we met in public; he would tell vivid stories of his short-stubby body terrorizing me with his wildly aimed maiming tackles. We are now of course very good friends and he’s become a well-respected DJ on the Northern Soul scene…his latest taunt for the last 2 years has been I haven’t found a copy his “”BIG” tune.. Well “SPANNER” this listing is revenge for my bruises and revealing what a pussy I was when it came down to the possibility broken bones. It’s your TOP TUNE my friend and revenge although 30 years too late - is so sweet! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 103.00 Jimmy Helms Romeo And Juliet A flipside overlooked by everybody upon it’s release in 1974 then pick up on by legendary Northern Soul DJ Ia Levine who turned it into a signature tune for himself during his comeback. Take a listen to this fantastic 70s soul dancer, that will underline how British Record Executives constantly promoted the wrong sides.. we couldn’t even bring ourselves to soundfile the yawning lead side, which was a complete waste of this New Yorker’s vocal prowess. So enjoy the instant pre-disco British produced Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 79.00 Martha & The Vandellas Quicksand C/w Darling I Hum Our Song A gorgeous seldom seen Red & White DEMO that speaks for itself. Condition is a minuscule fraction away from MInt minus. Vinyl has only the briefest sleeve contact blemish, label has a very light hardly visible sticker residue stain.. It’ll be tough to find a better copy of a Red & White you hardly ever see coming to market. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 174.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 Levi Jackson This Beautiful Day Thumpin’ Blackpool Mecca, Catacombs & later Wigan Casino classic that never got issued in the USA. 1970 there was strange happenings at EMI as they seem to catch on to the fact that Solomon King’s - This Beautiful Day - has potential as a SOUL release.. so fully 131 releases after it became a failed follow up to “She Wears My Ring” it appeared on the Friday release sheets once again So an EMI “somebody” had the foresight to release “This Beautiful Day” and re-credited it under the pseudonym “Levi Jackson” now that is some bold-soul christening. Possibly with Levi Stubbs & J. J. Jackson in mind..who knows? But this crafty move to capture the burgeoning British Soul market failed worse than the first release. Before you is the infinitely elusive black STOCK copy which in our experience is rarer by the sum of 5 to 1. Darn hard to find - and this copy is in showroom condition. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 186.00 Ed Bruce I'm Gonna Have A Party No need for me to remind any collector, just how tough this Wand “Ghost” is to hunt down. It’s been a classic “Popcorn” target for over 40 years, an elusive Northern Soul desirable for many years also.. but it seems those Belgium collectors ferreted out any lone “Stateside” copies decades ago; depriving the Northern Soul scene of a record that would have challenged any of the Tony Middleton’s & Ray Pollard for that “Big Vocal” play that seemed to be on every NS DJ’s set-menu late 70s early 80s. Super-tough to find and bristling with huge millage to become that long-overdue Northern Soul monster.. A”Popcorn” Godzilla it has always been… Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 487.00 Arterials What We Have Preposterously RARE Sweet Soul delicacy. Soaring misty horns fill the air, a stealthy vocal purrs and the vocal group buzz away gently… then the glacial falsetto pierces the calm. We have used the wording “haunting” over the years but this production makes that term obsolete - this is vocal group harmony on a totally different level. So tight, so slick and so moving - as we listen, the eerie atmosphere mushrooms into a distilled fogging-of-the-soul. Utterly BRILLIANT! and of course totally RARE! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 131.00 Soul Blenders Tight Rope C/w Drivin Me Mad If you like it RARE and you like it raw get your ears into this utterly fabulous Louisiana double serving of vocal group Northern Soul from the office of Traci Borges. Traci Borges never fails to delight with imaginative productions, experimental arrangements, this 45 is a fine example of how Traci pushed the studio boundaries. Top side showcases a husky lead vocal locked in an echo-chamber surrounded by strings and horns, distant chorus is supplied by both female and male back-up, with a swirling hammond break injecting a pinch of psyche into the soul mix… the extravagant blend work perfect with the stand-out lyrics “Lovin’ You Is Like walking A Tightrope” Flip it over and Traci’s penchant for the unconventional is underline again, with a equally if not better slab of vocal-group Northern Soul, embroidered with a crazed saxophonist. Two great sides, that have snooze for too long.. the right DJ could push this rarities value through the roof. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 208.00 Felix Thomas It's About Time C/w Title Message To A Lonely Girl Deep soul fans now for something ridiculously OBSCURE! We know nothing of the artist or the label! Except the that the mysterious Felix Thomas single-handed wrote and produced both sides. A funeral paced Southern Soul experience featuring a twangy blues inspired guitar intro and a dragging the depths of despair vocal partnered by a subtle background organ whirling perfectly to enhance Felix’s hopelessness. As Deep Soul goes, they don’t come much rarer than this. Flip it over the team pick up the pace, lifting spirits with a primitive mid-tempo Northern Soul stroller. Again the keyboard player in prominent in supporting the still unhappy lead vocal. A listing for those of you who enjoy digging really past the surface of the Rare and impossible. THIS IS STREET LEVEL D.I.Y. SOUL at it’s most interesting. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 10.00
pikeys dog Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Wonder what a UK copy of the Barbara Lewis LP would fetch on a Manships auction?
boba Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 that arterials is one of the rarest and best sweet soul records, worth way more than that, wish i was paying attention. 1
Quinvy Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 £1300 for The Trips is staggering!! I don't agree Steve, it's very hard to find an original that is stamped on both sides. 2
Rich B Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I don't agree Steve, it's very hard to find an original that is stamped on both sides. I have to agree, I don't think I ever saw one that was a definite stamped original.
Benji Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Wonder what a UK copy of the Barbara Lewis LP would fetch on a Manships auction? Or a german copy.
Steve G Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Or a german copy. Funny you should say that but I found a German test pressing white label complete with cover in Paris in the late 80s.....10 Francs. : 1
boba Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 also, i just paid $30 for that felix thomas, haha, i could have had a better deal on auction here.
boba Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 that coming of man record ending next week isn't related to johnny littlejohn. that group evolved into the 9th creation. one of a few groups from stockton.
Ian Dewhirst Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I don't agree Steve, it's very hard to find an original that is stamped on both sides. I agree. "There's That Mountain" must be one of the toughest ever originals. I've hardly ever seen one..... Ian
Guest Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I agree. "There's That Mountain" must be one of the toughest ever originals. I've hardly ever seen one..... Ian What kind of grammar is that Ian? I shall bow to your superior knowledge sir, although I thought a grand tops for a nm/vg copy
George G Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 (edited) 18 or so copies of the Trips 45 were found in a load of records that belonged to a long deceased long time record hoarder who moved from Los Angeles to Springfield, OR. The conditions ranged from "M-" (the person who bought the collection grade, I didn't see the copy) to good playing VG. I got one of the VG ones for $300. Edited January 2, 2014 by George G

If you are referring to the ones that were on ebay last year, they were very dodgy indeed. In fact we had a discussion about them on here, and the best conclusion was that they were re issues that were done from the original stamper for the "There's that mountain" side, but the label owner had lost the stamper for the other side and they used the alternate [inferior] b side instead.

Yes, that's right, thanks for telling me. I didn't read the part in the auction description about the "Moderized" side. The copies found are not Soussan boots though. The load of 45s included test pressings of the Trips as well as test pressings from other 45s of the same (mid 1960s) vintage all done through the RCA Hollywood plant. IMO the copies found are 1960s vintage but probably pressed shortly after the first pressing that JM sold. The mastering on the two sides is much different in volume. Yes George, if you examine the 45 you will see that the "there's that mountain" side is stamped, but the "love can't be modernised" side is just scratched in the run out. If you play the "love can't be modernised" side the sound quality is very poor, and is the same version that was booted on the soultown 45. This was not in the ebay description. I only found out when I bought one. I thought it was too good to be true, and it was. Edited January 2, 2014 by Quinvy
