D. C. Blossoms Hey Boy C//w I Know About Her

SHRINE TIME

and an extremely elusive one - which we are not ashamed to admit, this is our FIRST copy this century!

a wonderful Keni Lewis project with the arrangement in the capable hands of Dale Warren. The pair borrow from the Sound Of Motown to recreate a Marvelettes style Northern Soul dancer crammed full of horns, crashing cymbals, squealing trumpets and a sweet girl-group harmony as syrupy as it gets, with the expressive lead vocal keeping it’s “soul” intact.

KILLER NORTHERN SOUL

Flip it over and soak into a abyss of sultry ladies strokin’ your every emotion with their sensual delivery. Horny as hell sexy-soul!

Silhouettes Not Me Baby

Thanks to John Anderson and his legendary USA exploits hoovering up vinyl and delivering it to the Northern Soul DJ’s in just the right quantities; this PROMO only 45 giveaway with the 1968 Goodway “The Original and New” album was an overnight sensation.

Reliving the album of their attached 45’s John Anderson fed the Cleethoroes DJ with this astonishing potent Northern Soul masterpiece. Simultaneously igniting a monster tune of the Saturday at both Wigan Casino ^& Cleethorpes Pier as the trend of DJ’s spinning that weeks outstanding “finds” on the hour every hours.

The memorable booming vocal of John Wilson resounded round those hallowed halls to a rapturous response…as you can imagine.

Buddy Cantrell You Ain't No Good C/w Why Did You Leave Me

TUSKA Records the South’s equivalent to SHRINE with every release hard to find, decidedly good and ticking all the Rare Soul collector/DJ boxes.

This release offers a fabulously potent to Funk / Northern Soul hybrid that has been wowing some of the upfront RARE only clubs in recent times.

Mighty horns blast a hole for Buddy to metre out the lyrics with his barbed vocal style, the horns and rasping voice rebound off each other all the way to a very impressive instrumental break fusing brass and guitar in an irresistible dance period.

As good as the topside is, do not overlook the funeral paced Deep Soul ballad on the flip. Downbeat horns enhanced by quavering girl-group chorus embroider Buddy control expedition into despair.

Two awesome contrasting sides that underline this labels commitment to SOUL!

Isley Brothers Nevermore

British Tamla Motown completeists here is another but unfortunately our last in the series of EMI Acetates.

A unique 1972 Tamla Motown 7 “acetate of a track only issued on the ISLEY BROTHERS - PRESENTS - MFP 50014 album.

A beautiful constructed and perfectly delivered ballad, by a group with the power to squeeze every last drop of soul from lyrics. A funeral paced production that drags despair around the turntable for the full 2 minutes.

Very unlike Motown to produced real-Deep Soul but they could not a chosen better than the Isley Brothers to serve it.

Killer Soul and unique as a 7”

Serious about collecting British Tam la Motown this offering is more than likely to be ONE-OF-A-KIND

P. P. Arnold Everything's Gonna Be Alright

Decisions, decisions… two of the finest British exclusive contributions to Northern Soul on offer the same day.

Both came of age through the same pre-Wigan era when market stall and junk shop hysteria was at full tilt.. discoveries like Jason Knight, John Andrews, Father’s Angels, Chris Farlowe etc driving the fever and of course this beauty; all just perfect for the Northern Soul dancefloor.

It is hard to believe that Andrew Loog Oldham & Arthur Greeenslade encapsulated everything Northern during these 3 minutes, whilst on British soil.

THIS IS SISTER NORTHERN SOUL at it’s most-compelling. THIS IS BRITISH COLLECTING at it’s most-challenging

This copy has a few insignificant surface marks on the flipside vinyl - the play side has a couple of blemishes but 95% is like Mint minus… as you can hear it plays a loud, brilliant dancefloor enticing perfect.

Father's Angels Bok To Bach

A legendary BRITISH ONLY Northern Soul anthem!

It is not exaggeration at all, to say this is perhaps Northern Soul’s most-famous of all instrumentals having shook all nighters to their foundations long before Wigan Casino was even thought of.

A legend in British collecting, stupidly hard to acquire, alluring in the extreme aa the “silver A” adoring the “pink” beckons ownership.

Irresistible!

One Hundred Dollar Bill I Feel Funky C/w Can't Get You Out Of My Mind

There’s a buzz on this early 80s mixed-group delight, a Soul Sam DJ box resident.

Topside is a low-budget but thoroughly uplifting urban-dance production, on a D.I.Y. label. A relentless chugging arrangement backs a relaxed lead-vocal aided by a stinging girl-group chorus, then jazzed up yet again by a fabulous sax-break.

Flip it over, for a slick harmony ballad with a Sister-rap intro morphing into a tightly knitted testament to love’s desolation. A raw, primitive female experience that delivers a message of hurt.. loud and clear!

Two quality sides, coming from who knows where?

Cleo Page Goodie Train Part 1 & 2

and not for something completely different!

“The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur”

we cannot offer Excaliber, but if your smart you can carry this wildly-distinctive disc in your DJ box - because it is time to give the dancefloor “Something Completely Different”

It’s is near impossible to find a clean copy of this, expect for an extremely light surface brush this 45 is perfect - it certainly plays flawless.

Soul For Sale Let Me Love You C/w Dance Children Dance

Rare records do not get any more obscure than this superb Northern Soul crossover vocal offering.

No publishers credit, no writer, arranger or producer credits either, a label with so much lack of information we can only guess at it’s origins.

So let’s concentrate on the music hidden away in the grooves…and melt with instantly fluid horn intro as it’s met by a vocal at ease with itself, driven along by a constant prompting piano and the infectious horn riff punctuating the lyrics… welding the whole session into a “repeat” play dancer… the session has a “Carolinas” scent to the production..

We’ve audio’d the flipside too which somewhat pales by comparison but where on earth are you ever gonna hear it again..

A-side I’m sure you’ll agree is very special indeed; drenched in potential and pure street-level class!

NOTE the FRIDAY finish not Wednesday as it’s Christmas Day.

Hi-lights Oh Lover Of Mine C/w Man On The Shelf

Determined about Detroit?.. check out this extremely rare 1963 vocal group Northern Soul treasure!

Topside is a sublime Smokey Robinson inspired mid-tempo NS dance groove dripping with Motor City elegance and poise. A tapestry of sweet, sweet vocals melt in a rippling testament of the ladies loyalty for her man overseas at war.

Hard to believe this 45 never sold, because it is a stand-out tune of it’s genre, benefiting from a highly polished Dale Warren arrangement, and yet another impressive Bob Hankins & D. Yancy collaboration on the lyrics and production.

Flip it over for another Motownesque production as Yancy ratchets up the pace and adds male vocals to proceedings to craft a hand-clapping, fingerpoppin’ dancer capturing the very essence of the Motor City early 60s sound!

We can find no evidence of E-Bay listings or even correct spelling of the group’s name, as it invariably gets listed in discographies as the Hi-Lites. Double-underlining it’s genuine rarity… click the silky soundfile to hear two sophisticated but long-passed-over jewels.

Tempting Five I Can't Have You C/w The Rap

Sublime Detroit Mike Terry directed Sweet Soul groove. Icy falsetto pierces the air to be cradled by a sweltering-raft of harmony provided by his colleagues. The “Sax God” slowly but surely builds the arrangement from it’s slow paced start into a gorgeous soulful-stepper.

Ideal for those wet Saturday afternoon’s at “Soul Essence” to guard against that the Northern Sea chill. A wonderfully warming tune of the highest order. But what else would you expect from a Mike terry involvement.

Magic Circle I Was Bewitched C/w Stone Upsetter

For those of you seeking the obscure, this week’s lesser known offering - we’re pleased to debut this Californian “Mirwood” subsidiary’s rarest 45.

From the pen of Northern Soul hero Ray Whitley a man who provide “The Tams” with a seemingly endless supply of great songs comes another slick vocal-group Northern Soul stroller. Smooth as silk harmony and a booming “Tams” style bass-vocal reply.

Totally charming and utterly rare!

Has anyone seen an issue of fathers angels on mgm. and what would be the value?

I had a UK issue copy, no middle and very second hand, but in the words of Rob Smith (he sold it to me if I remember correctly "plays ok". No idea what it would be worth now though...

The Carolinas "scent" mentioned in the Soul For Sale description is way off the mark as this 45 is from Phoenix.  JM seems to deride the flip, Dance Children Dance, but if you like a pounding garage dancer there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, albeit chalk and cheese perhaps compared to the other auction items.

I think that went for a really good price for such a rare item. Do you have anymore info on them? It's a great record that's for sure.

The only info I have came from an ebay listing I didn't win.  Here's a link to the actual listing now preserved on popsike -

https://www.popsike.com/White-Soul-by-SOUL-FOR-SALE-Private-label-obscure/220513850802.html

The information is scant.  I assume the seller found the record, along with a few other obscure, mainly garage, 45's he was selling at the time, as stated at "Sidney J. Wakefield Custom Record Pressing Plant".  If memory serves me correctly the $404 sale price would have equated closer to £200 with the exchange rate at the time. (Either way Popsike only shows currency conversion based on current exchange rates so can be misleading.)

Its a rare soul scene ,unless your going to get on a plane and find your own records and I mean ,your own records ...its a case of people in glass houses ...

Whether your buying limit is £10 for a 45 of £10,000 ,your still buying records that somebody else discovered ,played at a venue ,played on a radio show ,put on a CD swap ,tape or a sales list .

So IMHO Kev ,the majority of us are all guilty of the same crime ..you ,me and 99% of the soul scene !

Motives aside ,it is the scene that we are in and the monster we have all created .

Hear, hear. Anyone who says they have never bought a record that they heard elsewhere and thought wow I must have that, is either a liar, or isn't human.

Hear, hear. Anyone who says they have never bought a record that they heard elsewhere and thought wow I must have that, is either a liar, or isn't human.

Missing the point, of course we buy records that we have heard elsewhere, its the buying because its deemed a "trophy" regardless of if its good or not, the desire coming from the fact that other people want it, "oooh, that must be rare, where's me cheque book"
