There seems to be a suddeen flurry of pink label 'Soozi ' copies of velvet hammer - Happy, coming up for sale since it was used in the viral video with the girl dancing to the new 'Pharrell Williams track and then the Velvet hammer track of the same name. Are these legit?
Also the copies that are surfacing are in mint condition? seems a bit sus to me!

My copy is on the pink label but I've had it since the 70's. I always thought the pink was the very first press.

Mines yellow/multi-coloured........bought early 80's........assume original but I wasn't wrapped up in all that back then! LOL

 

Would NEVER sell this record if only to retain the label design!

Mines yellow /multi coloured, can't recall seeing the pink one.

Always assumed the multi coloured is original release as never heard anything to change that.

One of the ones in question has now gone so can't link it. But the reason I brought up the subject was that someone on facebook said that they had just bought a mint copy off eBay for £45, so I looked on eBay, and lo and behold, there was another Mint copy for sale for £45, which riased my suspicions.

If it's not a boot all I can think then is that the seller has come across a few mint copies.

Always thought the Multi Coloured one was the proper copy.  Saw a White Demo and assumed it was the real one.  Thought the Pink ones were 'second press' or copy's

The record shop I worked in stocked the multi-coloured issue as a new release. It was about a year later when I heard Sam play it at an all-dayer. In the meantime I'd put it on tapes for quite a few people but no-one like it much at the time. I think it was Rod Shard who  ater tipped me off that it had started getting plays. I stuck it back in the sales box, crossed out £6, wrote £15 and flogged it straight away :lol:

Thought it was a bit white / poppy sounding for most of you lot  :g:

I have to admit in all honesty, that I had completely forgotten about the track since I first heard it some 30 years ago I think. I heard it for the first time recently on the video that I posted and to actually ask what it was. Instant love it was an had to have a copy. I finally managed to get it after being tipped off about an album by Andre Williams that included the track and bought one of those. Love albums anyway so not too bothered if it's not a 7.

You kidding - it sounds 100% blue eyed, always thought it was, sounds like an early to mid 70's California pop band.  Good record but not a soul record in the slightest.

Andre Williams was even a member of the Velvet Hammer. 

 

EDIT: in response to the original question, i don't see any evidence of boots being around.

It's a very nice track but Pete is right about the sudden interest.

Fair enough for those who weren't familiar with it and have suddenly fallen in love with it but it's further proof that many people don't use their own taste to decide which records to buy and how much to pay for them.

How many people ignored this 45 when it was £5 or £10 or even £20 or whatever?

Always thought that multi-coloured was the original, and according to JM's 6Th edition is 50% dearer.

I do agree with that in some cases, but in my case, my wife was playing on her lappy while I was on my PC, I heard it and recognised that I knew the track from years ago and asked her what it was, she said it's a video that my sister-in-law had put on her facebook page. I asked on facebook if anyone know the track and got the answer. So was nothing to do with seeing a video with it on, in my case if I'd have heard it out, I would have recocnised it and asked what it was too.

Love the track and look forward to playing it.

BUT can I add that I don't think it is a true representation of Northern Soul either, I would actually place it in the 'Disco' genre more than Northern Soul, along with the Brainstorms and Skip Mahoneys of this world, but then again, I love the disco stuff too.

I know what you mean but it's records like Velvet Hammer that played their part in making the northern/rare soul scene the greatest popular culture scene , and  still   the greatest popular culture scene there is anywhere today, and it's still   very much an underground scene despite what a number of the older heads have recently been saying on here about the "future" of the "scene".

Surprised you haven't heard it out and about,its been hammered to death in the nw and still is sick to death of it to be honest lol.

I have the multicolour issue with the Frankford/Wayne stamp in the run out as far as I know the pink issue also has Frankford/Wayne stamp in the run out so its a legit copy.

I didn't say it didnt, I was merely comparing it to the out and out Northern Soul tracks such as the 'Frankie Beverleys and Eddie Parker' style records, saying that it wasn't in that style of music.

I 100% agree what you are saying and know this too as I have loved the music for over 40 years, and visited some of the best club going in that time, including the Torch, VaVas, Samantha's, Casino and the place that I think Velvet Hammer was first played Blackpool Mecca. Someone will correct me if I am wrong there.

Tunes like this HAVE as you say helped make the scene what it is today, and who knows what the future of the scene is, not you or I or anyone for that matter, it will happen as it happens and we'll have to wait and see,
