Simsy Posted June 24, 2006 Author Posted June 24, 2006 Unreleased (acetate) track, played a lot by Dave Thorley at Stafford Thanks Simon. Was Dave Thorley the only one with it I wonder? Was it played before Stafford? And has anyone heard it out since?

Guest uroffal Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 Thanks Simon. Was Dave Thorley the only one with it I wonder? Was it played before Stafford? And has anyone heard it out since? Think Dave Thorley was the only person with it, certainly only remember him playing it at Stafford. Was covered as Detroit something or others! Same backing track as 'Like My Baby' and superb
Cunnie Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 Thanks Simon. Was Dave Thorley the only one with it I wonder? Was it played before Stafford? And has anyone heard it out since? Don't DJ at many northern nights any more Ian (probably because i play things like the Paul Varley track that's on another thread ) but on the odd time i do a northern spot i try to fit this in somewhere. Great record. Got a spare copy you can have for £15 & i'll even chuck in a copy of our latest Modernism CD if you want it. Send us a pm if you're interested. Mart...

Quinvy Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 Will do mate, cheers. The sound quality on the Washpan 45 is crap. John Manship did have a proper test pressing of it but it was very expensive, £500 I think. But I love it, very atmospheric. Phil.
Tony Smith Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 Originally played by Dave Thorley at Stafford as the Detroit Five, the test pressing credited to George "We're In A Rat Race"/"Oh No Not Me" Atac 2830 brought back by Gilly and sold to Ion, later went to Butch then Dave Flynn which looks like the one on Johns rarest of the rare, enough I'll get me pipe
Ted Massey Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 Dave Thorley had it on his selling up list years ago for £300 it did not sell and Soul bowl who he originally had it from got it back as far as i know perhaps dave can confirm. same list had the Combinations Kimtone £175 and the Classics Yang £300 Erenst moseley£30 Moments deep £100 ted
Simsy Posted June 24, 2006 Author Posted June 24, 2006 Like my baby ..........is far superior though And this ... ?
Tony Smith Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 And this ... ? on Do De Re, with "Gino Is A Puppet" on the other side which came out on at least 4 labels including Ric-Tic and Son-Bert (though not with the inst.), played a lot upstairs at Stafford by George Sharp, if I'm not mistaken? boring as instrumentals go, even if you're off your head!
Simsy Posted June 25, 2006 Author Posted June 25, 2006 (edited) First release on Ric Tic - flipside of 'Gino is a coward'. Gino Wahington - Puppet on a string (Ric-Tic) Edited June 25, 2006 by Simsy

Guest Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 (edited) Unreleased (acetate) track, played a lot by Dave Thorley at Stafford I have this on an original 60s vinyl test press. We have it up on ROTR https://www.raresoulman.co.uk/rarest-of-the-rare/27 if anyone want to see it or hear it. I've been told there is maybe 3 copies. Anyone know of another? Guest Baz Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Like my baby ..........is far superior though Yep just listend to Rat Race for the first time......Like my baby pisses all over it brilliant double sider!
Guest in town Mikey Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Both a superb. Agree that 'like my baby' edges it tho. Another with the other 350 in my Stafford top ten.
Md Records Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 According to the sleeve notes on the "Love Bandit" Album:- "In 1969, Gino employed the Three Year old backing tracks to "Like My Baby" and reworked it as "Rat Race", seemingly an observation on the turbulent changing times "Actually the reason I did that record was it was a commentary on the entertainment business and how people double cross you. They went to the Moon but what did they find? It didn't come out until the Eighties when we issued it in England."

[/quote I got vinyl test press of "Rat Race" deadwax matrix reads Atac 2830 A Sound Patterns DXM mastering Detroit first. Flipside is Oh Not Me (vocal) matrix reads AT2878A 243 GM East Det. This side was pressed Off-center so if looks like it was due for release then got shelved. With Oh not me getting released on # 2878 with Hey I'm A Love Bandit as the flip. Which is EXACTLY the same master plate as the flip to Rat Race.
Pete S Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I actually heard Rat Race before I heard Like My Baby and although both are brilliant, Rat Race just edges it for me. The instrumental version is fantastic as well.
Simsy Posted June 26, 2006 Author Posted June 26, 2006 Which is EXACTLY the same master plate as the flip to Rat Race. With additional vibraphone. Like my baby release faster tempo.
