Al Jackson Jr at Stax, one of the greatest.

IMHO one of the most brilliantly understated pieces of drumming.

But just perfect . . . . . . .

Sandy Billups from Brass Construction had me queing to get him to sign my album after a performance at Blackpool Mecca, The drum break in T-Connections 'Do what you want to Do' gets my vote though. Starts at 1:54 on this clip and ends just after you die:

We discussed who the drummer was on this one a while back and it was confirmed it was the incredible George McGregor.

One of the ,most stunning drumming performances on a soul record ever!

The finest ever use of sensitivity, tension, suspense, anticipation and intensity in music.

And a perfect education in the art of musical dynamics and human expression.

Truly special.

Amongst everything else that's going on, including one of the great intros of all time, I've always loved the manic drum work on the Montclairs - 'Hung up on your love'. Maybe not classic, but he doesn't half put a shift in.

Staying on topic, Roger Hawkins up there. And Howard Grimes overshadowed by Al Jackson but could definitely hold his own.

Do Bongos count, if so Curtis Mayfields player Eddie ?? could bang with the best!
