Russ Records Monster Lists 74-?

WHEN DID RUSS START PUTTING OUT HIS RECORD LISTS? AND DID THEY CONTINUE UNTIL WIGAN CLOSED?

I HAVE A FEW FROM 1974..AND SOME SURPRISING BARGAINS (WITH HINDSIGHT), IT ALSO PROVES THE POINT THAT HE HAD SOME TASTY STUFF ON THE GO AT THE CASINO..AND NOT JUST POP CRAP AS MANY PEOPLE THINK.aNYONE ELSE HAVE THESE LISTS?...WHEN I SPOKE TO RUSS SOME YEARS BACK HE SAID HE DIDNT HAVE ANY OF THESE EARLY LISTS..BUT I'M SURE THEY ARE OUT THERE..

I distinctly remember having one in May 76.  It had stuff like Salvadors, George Blackwell, all bootlegs being sold as originals. It also had the Boola Boola version of the Natural Four at a fiver, not mentioning it was a different version of course, man it was a hard record to sell back in those days.

Reason I remember the date is because I was sitting my last exam before leaving school and I'd given up after half an hour and was reading the list, it was confiscated off me...

You would have been very disappointed in 76 buying the "slow" version of the Natural Four!! I didn't really get into it until about 1979, but even in the early 80's a fiver bought you some great tunes!

Loved both versions of The Natural Four, from 1st hearing, the back end of 74.

I think all lists from that time, had bargins on them, lots of stuff around the pound mark now sell for desent money.

Both versions used to sell around that, or eight quid on a good day.

Can you stop the shouting (caps lock on when posting) and use of colour

as harder to read, used bu most as emphasis and just looks odd

That's interesting selling boots as originals, either a whopping lack of knowledge for a 'top allnighter DJ' or a shister.

These were the really, really good counterfeits, included a vinyl Mel Britt, George Blackwell, Anderson Bros, Salvadors, Joe Romans etc took people a while to suss it out...they were quickly followed by styrene versions, but the first, vinyl ones, were very convincing

Interesting though, if you're selling quite a few very convincing boots of big tunes around the same time you might twig on. Especially given you're mates with a well known bootlegger so would have a knowledge of that kind of caper.

Never kept these old lists..wish I had now ..they make interesting reading.

I used to make regular Saturday trips to his stall on Wigan market..before the allnighters started..probably early '73?..lots of re-issues then but the odd nice thing

hmm. off thread but..i can remember a story about Russ in the US ( accompanying the winners of raffle or dance comp late 70's) buying copies of the yum yums?..

Yes , those pressings , think they sold for three quid each, i bought the salvadors and the international gtos , they were really good quality , also paid a fiver around 78 for natural four abc demo ,

No he did - we're not talking about the styrene pressings that came a month or so later, these were proper counterfeits
