I've still not been able to finish the book, I keep going at it but it's just so drugs, drugs, drugs, it wears you out...

Exactly Pete and it's not what it was about. It was a factor, but that's all. Like you I started but didn't finish as it became tedious from someone who didn't do the drugs and if the film focuses in the same way then once again the scene will be tarred with the same brush that must now becoming devoid of bristles.

I did finish the book and enjoyed it, but totally agree that the emphasis on drugs really grates.

I guess if I'd written the book then people who were mates with those into drugs would have exactly the same criticisms, feeling that it ignored the drugs side.

Certainly keen to see the film anyway.

I'm not going into denial about drugs.  But I just felt it was too much, that's all.

I wasn't trying to undermine how difficult it is to get a film into the cinemas these days. I was merely making the point that with all the recent good publicity, it would be a shame to lose that impetus.

The general public, or sheep as I like to think of them, need to be bombarded with media and celebrity coverage so they think that it's the next big thing.

Whereas I thought the book thrashed all the other ones on the subject. Honest depictions and a completely different take from people who were there; warts and all accounts which yes included drugs, a subject that seems to be nicely airbrushed from many other texts.

It captured the Stafford / post Stafford attitude which all other.. Ahem... 'definitive' books ignored or at best lightly touched before heading back to Station Road or fast forwarding to Stoke. Perhaps you had to be there during the post Wigan period to be interested in it... Sad if that's true but I'm beginning to suspect for many it is.

Looking forward to the film and salute Elaine and co for the years they've put into this.

I am bristleling with anticipation of the 72 page thread that will accompany the release of this film and the amature Barry Norman reviews that folks on here will concoct

Note to self:

Ignore post.

Ok, I wrote a note to self, I tried to resist the temptation, but hey bollox to it....DRUGS, DRUGS, DRUGS were every where, every single person I knew on the scene was involved in some way, whether people like it or not, or whether all these years later they are willing to admit it or not, Amphetamines were the fuel that drove the scene, for years people have tried to pretend they never did it (cos the music was enough lol), it wasnt really that bad (yeah, right !) etc, etc....even RW wrote that they wernt a major part of the WC experience....YES THEY WERE...there, I said it...my book has hopefully arrived today, it has taken about 6 weeks to get to Baghdad, I will read it cover to cover tonight & report back....however, the mere fact that the subject has been broached honestly (?) is a bonus IMHO....

I now await the onslaught of the 'me Mam just packed me sarnies' brigade to once again claim the 'music was enough'....but no matter how many now refuse to recognise the seedier side of the scene, it happened live with it, dont try to cover it up...

Russ I think you're missing the point - a good 50% used to take gear, me included - I'm talking about the book, and half way through it, you'd think everyone did - the emphasis is too heavy.  Just my opinion, not trying to rewrite history.

I was lucky to see an advance screening of the film for music business reasons. I was nervous on elaine's behalf as I know how much she has put into this but my fears were unjustified, it's a stunning film that works on all levels. Its something the scene can feel proud of.

I do have a few reservations about the book but it's as good as any so far and much better than the vast majority.

I really liked Tim Brown's book Wigan Casino Years.   And Neil Rushton's book.  But they are more tailored to record collectors I think.

Thanks for the in depth and well thought textual analysis of a film that hasn't yet been released and that you haven't even seen. Cracking that.

Can't wait for the 72 page thread of similar comedy nuggets on release. Best get some tins in :)

Hey, my advise is this - It's a film, to hopefully get some pleasure out of seeing......We all know it's never going to be the next 'Uncle Buck', but I do think it will be an enjoyable couple of hours if we take it for what it is - a film.

All the best,

Len

I wasn't expecting a release until after xmas anyway.

I'm sure it will be a good film, I know it features some good music but we shouldn't expect 100% realism.

If it was an accurate historic portrayal they would have had to find actors who look as young and slim and stylish and sexy as we all did in those days.

That would have been a very difficult task.

Probably.
