It's a great example of a record bridging the gap between the 60's and the 70's. It signals a lot of the studio techniqes and smooth edges that were to come later on. I wouldn't deny that this is a track that crossed over to pop or is even a "pop" track. but it's still a soul track and still gets played on chicago r&b stations (ok Herb Kent's radio show). i don't see how that's different than dozens of motown songs like "get ready", that was Berry Gordy's entire goal in his productions. it's definitely not pure "pop" (e.g. not soulful at all) but I don't see why other people would get offended if someone views it that way, I can at least see where they're coming from even though I disagree. Not sure on a forum that regularly features people foaming at the mouth over some truly crap records, there is a quality measure we're supposed to limit our postings too. No one is saying it's a rare soul gem or the best record ever made.
