Mick Holdsworth Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) Might be there's no way to tell, especially if they were packed at a different stage to being numbered. I suspect for every pack with 2 x Barbara McNair, there is a pack with 2 x Originals/Marvin in it - might have to organise a swap centre when the dust settles. Just tried to get a replacement and it's not available anymore, only a refund - Dilema. Edited November 22, 2013 by Mick Holdsworth 3
TOAD Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Ive just been on the universal web site and you can still order it for £44.99 and the postage was approx £1.50
Guest ruffsounds Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 The box number I had problems with was 61 so it must be a random thing or it seems they pressed too many Barbara McNair's :0) as that seems to be the main double.
Steve G Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 (edited) OK keep the thread going lads, mine hasn't arrived yet, but if it has two Originals in it I'll gladly swap one for a B McNeir….etc…that way no losers. Edited November 23, 2013 by Steve G 2
Agentsmith Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Actually, Richard has the expertise to do a release like this properly and if 2,200 have been manufactured then I'd say that's a great result for all concerned. As powerful as Universal are, they're not as concerned about limited appeal deep catalogue releases because it's not really worth their while, so it really makes more business sense to farm out the specialist releases to the right parties and in this case they got it 100% correct. I'd rather Richard was doing this stuff than anyone else. Makes all the sense in the world in my view. Ian D couldn't agree more ian, if you had to put a project in anyone's hands, it would be richard....everything he has been involved in over the decades has been of value, be it vinyl, live acts or cd...nice to go "back to black" though isn't it?...s.o.s. band at the hilton??.....say no more!!
Russ Vickers Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 (edited) I have just had to break my self imposed buying ban....bugger !!!...Universal still have copies BTW. Best Russ Edited November 23, 2013 by Russ Vickers 1
Mark Bicknell Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 A seller has them on ebay at £49.99 plus postage, had 10 to start with down to 2 available, It's a safe bet that by the middle of next week this will be sold out, I was gonna buy 2 but then thought no let someone else enjoy one lol, another seller had them on ebay at £59.99
Sammy Seaman Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 returned mine 2 barbara mcnair reorded straight away, arrived 2day all ok no 00665/2000
Mick Holdsworth Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 OK keep the thread going lads, mine hasn't arrived yet, but if it has two Originals in it I'll gladly swap one for a B McNeir….etc…that way no losers. The missing record is actually Marvin Gaye / Spinners (my mistake in saying Originals the earlier post) Seems it's the same packing error that keeps occuring. I'm sure to offset this, there will be an equal amount of packs with 2 x Marvin and no B. Mcnair surfacing soon. If that has already happened to anyone yet, let us know. Cheers Mick 1
Guest abdntony Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Looks like Amazon have put their price up by a tenner, too. Sure it was £45 ish a few days back Try soul brother https://www.soulbrother.com/shop/motown-7s-box-set-rare-and-unused-box-set/ for a £50 copy if you need one Got one at £49.99 of your soul brother link :-)
Phild Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 The only "problem" with this box set is that the labels just don't look good enough IMO. The definition and resolution of the Tamla Motown logo is not as good as it could be. Looks like a repro of a scan of the logo

Phild Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 could you scan one? Will do. Well I'll take a picture
soul45s Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Im generally pleased with the set, but my download voucher didnt work
Phild Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 here you go .. Mind you it's not put me off as I've just ordered my 6th boxset
Soul16 Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 A tiny little part of my brain is starting to become obsessed with questions, statistics, facts and figures that could be derived from this set of records... A limited edition of 2000 numbered boxes have been produced. I'm sure I've read a quote by Richard Searling, saying that there will 2200 made - Does this mean that there are 200 promo boxes out there and will the records have white labels with big red A's on both sides? How many Soul Source members have bought it? Will they play them? Will they download the mp3 copies? Where did they buy the set from? What number set do they have? Where in the world have they gone? Will the monetary value of the set increase? Is a low number more desirable? Will the sets with missing/duplicate records reveal a pattern? A numbering system is a great marketing tool, it also demonstrates a truly limited run. To be honest, I'm surprised that there are still any left for sale at all, given what is up for grabs. It will be interesting to see what happens when they start appearing for re-sale on Ebay. I'm keeping mine though, that is without question.
Ric-tic Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 here you go .. Mind you it's not put me off as I've just ordered my 6th boxset thanks phild, looks okay to me. ill look out for you on compulsive hoarders on channel 4
Johnty Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 It appears the high numbers (1800 +) are the "defective" packs, whereas the low numbers (100+) are all OK. Unfortunately that leaves a whole bunch that are either good or bad My copy number 1885 everything ok another 3 ordered will have to check them when they come It appears the high numbers (1800 +) are the "defective" packs, whereas the low numbers (100+) are all OK. Popular Post Cunnie Posted November 23, 2013 Popular Post Posted November 23, 2013 Why on earth would anyone want to order more than 1 set? Just greedy & depriving someone else of a set IMO. 6

Also I'm a Moderator on here & would just like to see every member get a fair chance of getting a set at the right price. 9
Phild Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Why on earth would anyone want to order more than 1 set? Just greedy & depriving someone else of a set IMO. Because I can. One to play, one to keep shrinkwrapped, one in case of emergencies and the others for pressies
Cunnie Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Because I can. One to play, one to keep shrinkwrapped, one in case of emergencies and the others for pressies Fair enough Phil. Not so sure all of the people who end up missing a set will see it that way though
Sammy Seaman Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 have i been unlucky again? 1st pack came with out marvin gaye then replacment arrives just play tested them the temptations skips in 3 places and the spinners jumps right at the end, played them on both my decks so no problem with gear, any suggestions of what to do,
Guest east rob Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Ordered a set off Amazon this afternoon. It was showing 2 left before I got mine

Soulboy1957 Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Just received 2 sets today - one set is all correct with the seven different records, but the other set has Marvin Gaye missing and 2 x B McNair. Is it possible to send just the one pack back to Amazon, or do I have to send both packs back and hope the replacements are both correct.? Cheers Mick they got none left Mick, my box same spoke today and seem unclear what they are going to do about it
Supercorsa Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Wasn't planning on opening mine until Christmas morning, but with a few people stating they had missing and duplicate records, thought I'd take a peek. Anyway they're all present and correct. Box 01726 direct from Universal. I also had (have) a self imposed buying ban at the moment, but knew if this wasn't purchased almost immediately, then I'd be left with two choices. Either never getting one or pay a small fortune at a later date when supply couldn't meet demand.
Mickjay33 Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 played my box set 0251 tonight at the stute the spinners came out as fav tune by a long way
Triode Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 What with records skipping, duplicate copies and missing discs Universal obviously have pretty poor Quality Control considering only 2000/2200 units were manufactured! I doubt EMI would have made errors like this - still I guess we are fortunate they have even considered pressing them on Vinyl in 2013,
BrianM Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Got box no 412 2x Barbara mcnair no marvin gaye

As being fortunate to get a vinyl release in 2013 maybe but its no excuse for missing records in boxes and skipping records .
BrianM Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Just order'd one off universal when it comes going to check it if its ok going to send other one back to amazon get my money back .
kevinsoulman Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) MINE ARRIVED THIS MORNING SUNDAY ROYAL MAIL NUMBERED 908 930 1796 FROM AMAZON ALL OK LIKE HOW THEY HAVE LEFT A GAP IN THE NUMBERING OF THE 45'S 534 543-0 THEN 1 & 2 NO 3 4 OR 5 THEN 6 7 8 & 9 DOES THIS MEAN THAT PROBABLY THE SECOND SET IS ALREADY PRESSED AND READY TO GO AND IF SO WILL SOME SNEAK OUT THE BACK DOOR BEFOREHAND JUST A THOUGHT KEV Edited November 24, 2013 by kevinsoulman
Mike Lofthouse Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 So has anyone had two Marvin Gayes? - if not where have they gone and why are there extras of Barbara McNair and not the others? are we to see a thriving market for 'spares' akin to the 100 club 45s?
Popular Post Illusive Posted November 24, 2013 Popular Post Posted November 24, 2013 Mine's staying sealed till Xmas day despite a burning desire to check all's in order Just out of curiosity and no doubt a bloody daft question, but has anyone that got duplicates played em both to check they've not been mislabelled 5
night nurse Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 i wonder who got the first copy of this no1 still contemplating buying this one
Soul16 Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Is it me or has the frank Wilson been remastered or a heavy bass line added. Well worth every penny and comes with a cd download voucher It's not you, on my system, the bass line sounds tighter and more defined in the mix. You can hear individual bass notes being played. It hasn't robbed the recording of it's original feel though. 1

Just sent an email to Universal regarding this, see what they suggest, I can't see it only being two instances of bad copies pretty sure more will surface as people check their sets, such a shame like I say, I've lost confidence in the package already and to cap it all you have to wait 30 days for a refund from Universal, maybe I should ask Phil Dick to check one of his spare sets for decent copies lol Edited November 24, 2013 by Mark Bicknell

It certainly is starting to turn sour, anybody that has bought multiple sets to keep unopened, mint and unplayed may now have a double dilemma on their hands. If they have been bought with a view to being sold on in the future, they may prove easier to sell having been confirmed as a full and playable set. I notice that a reviewer on Amazon has passed comment on the missing record issue too. The Marvin Gaye 45s must be out there somewhere...
Popular Post Mark R Posted November 24, 2013 Popular Post Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) I know you'll say I shouldn't be naive, and actually I'm not, but WTF is all this buying multiple copies? It was great to read that Mark Bicknell resisted buying multiple copies.....restored my faith........and then I scrolled down ro read of people with 6 copies!! Not such a soul family after all eh? Let your fecking mates on here buy and enjoy it for Christs sake. Same happens on record store day.......multiple copies of the Gregory Porter etc and then eBay at £50.....I just bought one and was happy to let other people enjoy it. One of the bad sides of this scene for me....... Cheers, Mark R Edited November 24, 2013 by Mark R 10

TOAD Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 If the box set is pressed at universals plant they are not as chunky plastic as the Trojan limited 45s which is a shame
