I had a recording on a cassette, now lost. I'm sure the title was 'Dead', it was slow tempo, very simple production. The lyric went like this "Dead...I wish I was...he's gone...I just wish I was dead'. I'd love to find this record. searched all over. Can anyone help ?

Richard Searling used to play the Charay version at the back end of Wigan sometimes.He really liked the song at that time.

Charay  is also responsible for the Mark 11 and another version  if memory serves me right.

There is also a cut on a cheap british L.P by another female who's name escapes me - incidently the philips version appeared on a cheap new ginea l.p too

Thanks again for the input, I'm not a connoisseur of deep soul, but after hearing the 4 versions, it's the Ede Robin track that really hits the spot now. As for Searling playing the 'Dead' track at Wigan Casino...are you sure ? I can't remember and I was a Searling Devotee. I remember Ede Robin's "There must be a love somewhere" being played, just dug it out and played it...What a cracking tune !

Some lyric changes ie Carolyn Sullivan has the tamed down ""Phone in my hand" on the Philips release but the more shocking "razor in my hand" on the Soft release.

 

Some were released with the title "I Don't Care No More" such as Edith Jones and Berry Street Station.

Well at least you can see and hear the Ede Robin version now Dave,thanks to SPC's earlier post, and maybe pass it onto Mark Allbones. Hope that's the Discography complete, as for me...I'm outclassed, I asked a simple question, got it answered and got myself an education...apart from one thing...was it ever played at a Northern Soul Venue ?

What 'kin drum break ?

 

Hello Dave, not a 'drum break' as such but the drum intro (just the first two bars of the track before the bass guitar and organ comes in) has been sampled and looped into a longer rhythm track.

You only need one bar anyway because the first two bars are the same.

Thanks for the credit, Dave.  I became a tad obsessed with this track some years ago and I'm still trying to hold myself back from needlessly buying all the versions, though they are all slightly different. The Phyllis Brown version is horrific (simply because the dubbed-on strings are incredibly out-of-tune) and will be the very last one I need in the house. The Ede Robin "version" was not a unique release at all. It was merely the Edith Jones vocal (the first incarnation, I believe) credited to Ede Robin for is inclusion on a Charly compliation LP called Major Bill's Texas Soul.

Does anyone know of another record from which the backing track has been re-used for so many different unique releases? Bill must really have had faith in it, the nutter.

I think someone once told me there's an instrumental credited to Johnny Lytle.

The good news is that a stringless version of this exists too. Was released on the same number (Soft 1037) but artist name on the label is just Phyllis instead of Phyllis Brown. The not so good news is that it's a bugger to find. Beautiful version though, well worth tracking down.

Billy Dee: Soul Heaven / King Bee (Le Cam 124) Thanks to Tony Rounce for reminding me about this one from 1975 that I had seen listed some years ago and had forgotten. Basically, "Soul Heaven" is a lyrical revamp of Eddie Dean's "Hillbilly Heaven" (recorded many times by artists such as Tex Ritter) but Billy describes arriving in the ever-after to meet the likes of Otis Redding rather than Hank Williams...and using the Dead track as intermittent backing, but the fuller Mark II version. Also found on Billy's own TCB label.

A spoken-word gospel track - a pointless of cover of the Wendell Bagwell hit - using the Dead backing throughout and the longest version yet heard. The flip on the Le Cam pressing is the same instrumental as Zuma 652. Cool flipside is the same as found on the Fiery Spartans, James Moore etc.
