Oh I thought you said we should all still be doing it

I'm just thinking, the thought of adults in their 50's taking gear* is as bad and sad as adults in their 50's dressing up in clothes of the same style they wore in 1977.

* not aimed at anyone in particular, just in general

What about 50+ adults who go out & get absolutely bolloxed on alcohol.....spose thats perfectly alright & good for you ?...not saying that its a good thing, but its hypocritical for some (not you neccessarily Pete) to come the 'Holier Than Thou' attitude towards gear then go out regularly & get fall over p*ssed...just sayin like...

A good friend of mine once came up to me at one of my promotions and said, "do you realise that you and me are probably the only ones in the room [it was very busy] that aren't on gear?"

I am very naive on this subject, but I rather think my friend knew what he was talking about.

Er NO, I didnt...It was a generalisation, not aimed directly at you personally, but in answer to your comment, I deliberatle wrote 'NOT NECCESSARILY AIMED AT YOU', so as you would know the comment was not personal.  I'm not sure I could have been any clearer ?

Well as it said the word YOU I think most people would ascertain that it was aimed at ME, whatever you wrote in the next sentence.  Anyway who cares...I do not like drinking at all nighters.

Phil, I don't.

You know which venue you're mainly associated and this implies that only you and one other weren't on gear.

If it's the venue I'm thinking of, I know a few who went there and didn't take gear.

If it's not that venue, ignore my comment!

He did a really good version of What Does It Take To Win Your Love, I've got it on a 1972 LP so it may be LP only but it's as good as any of the other covers.

Yes LP only, he was a really good singer.....can't deny that.

Off topic again but on the subject of Ronnie Milsap there are a number of budget albums on labels like Trip and Gusto which collected the Scepter recordings (some never issued by Scepter) to cash in on his Country stardom of the mid 70s.

A track i've always liked from these which could be played at a broadminded soul night is "I Can't Stop Crying". Soulful pop really but with a great vocal and a vintage American Studios production.

The Festivals is a first hour warm up or chill out tune for soul nights or sunday sessions, but you know that. :)

I do except there is a difference between what can be played at a Soul Night compared to an All-nighter. Like any record, it all depends where you are / who the crowd is etc. Some can and do dance to tunes like these - in other situations, some like to be out to just listen and enjoy.

All the best,

Len

P.s - I bet (If he wanted to) Butch could 'splice' it in, and keep the floor going when playing some of his slower stuff (Especially at The 100 Club)

Hi Gaz, that's not strictly true. there's a collectors angle here too. A lot of us have played sizeable sums for good unknowns, either on spec or because they are unknown and hence by definition rare....But I do agree everyone is on a journey and everyone is at a different stage of that journey. One man's great £10 find is another's moment of boredom. We are all in different places.

Also there is a massive difference between "rare" and "in demand". Rare is the most over used word I've ever heard (apart from "across the board").....basically used to describe any record more than £20. Plenty of these so called "rare" records are not rare at all and plenty of genuine good quality rare records aren't even on most people's radars.

Agree with everything there mate.  I have payed money for oscure things that i anticipate are rare. And obviously records that are rare and not generally played or known - my position is totally from a collectors point of view.

I remember Dave Evison playing Curtis Mayfield's 'Move on Up'  for the 1st time during his early morning set at Wigan Casino in the mid-seventies. I thought that was as gutsy as hell, a £1:00 universally released record played when the punters where counting every dance floor second, before being chucked onto the streets. It became a floor filler for months.

Don't think there was anything good about playing that track at a nighter. I would have been mortified. It's hardly northern is it? Just another collector who shouldn't be Djing in my humble opinion. Too many big name dj's going through the motions.

NOT MUCH HOPE FOR ME THEN I'M MICK SMITHS APPRENTICE! LOL

Has it? :D.......You probably missed a discussion where some people said it was a dance floor killer (That's why Ted said he had sold his), and that there was not a lot about the record, so I understand how that may have come across to you (I completely disagreed) I know it's been around for years - To me it's one of my tape sounds that filtered down from guys like you - not sure where or when it was first played, and would be interested.

I'd be interested in who was playing this years ago as I'm sure this was played in the late 90's or before as i remember dancing to it.......It's the Wes Montgomery  style guitar licks I like.I heard it at Hamburg as well.......so a revived oldie.

I remember Phil Dick had a copy of Ramona Collins circa 1993-94 and was playing it out

I always thought it was first played in the 80's, but wouldn't be surprised if Richard Searling played it earlier - I've had it on tape since the late 80's.

it was played at Stafford and probably before, Chris Plant had it and played it at the 100 club probably 1983/4. he sold it to Andy Spencer who I bought it of. when Butch played it on Saturday it was the first time I had seen quite a few dance to it. normally clears the floor

i got my first copy off Sam when he started to sell off his northern in 1980 so he was playing this on & off a year or 3 earlier, can't recall if it was long or short intro tho, the 1 i got in the late 80's from him in a trade for a miami flight does have the long intro 8-)

I think Ramona Collins was a late Searling spin at Wigan

Very late on, and only a couple of times I think, I always associate it with Planty really.
