Pete S Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 and another 20 quitter... I know you like this one... 1
Chalky Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 And how good a record is Try Me?! I think the last time I saw Chalky we talked about what a great record this is. Absolutely brilliant. I actually put this back in the box a few outings ago but never played it. It's got everything IMO.
Guest gordon russell Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Check out this thread for loads of examples of great underplayed uptempo and under fifty quid records.Would have loved the thread to have lasted longer and would love to hear more of them played out alfreda brockington....how good is that....joann garrett.......ditto
Moxey25 Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 i go with the crowd i play what thay will dance to
Guest drewid Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 The politics , the bitching , the back slapping, the arse licking , the bullshitters, just reading this thread reminds me why I am very fickle where I go , it just, well, gets on me tits, so I choose mainly to sit at home with my headphones on 1
Staceys Dad Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Here's a great cheapie...... what a great tune......... 1
Guest gordon russell Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Been at a few venues were i've tried to help with the sound probs.Usually its banged up on volume and gains.Amp cant cope.Too small. what did ya do kev stop talking? lol
Wiggyflat Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 See it everywhere but its the ginger stepchild of I Dont Care.....just my tempo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEsnOITHWC0 2
Jim Elliott Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Agreed Ivor. Mick has been top notch down those stairs over the years. I vividly remember walking in the door in the 80s to him playing 'Why, when love is gone' by the Isleys and the place was going ffing bananas...and the nighter had only just started, EVERYONE WAS ON THE FLOOR. Best Jim
Popular Post Wiggyflat Posted October 25, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 25, 2013 And another under a tenner......would you dance to this? beats all those overplayed oldies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81qbKCQbVuI 6

Pete S Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Here is the world's best £10 record. I can't believe anyone could not like this. It is very special. Can you imagine having the thrill of hearing this for the first time ever? I especially love that kind of choral part right in the middle before it shifts up a gear and gets even more intense. What a record. 3
Patto Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 alfreda brockington....how good is that....joann garrett.......ditto Yep Gordon two of my fave records at the moment the kind of stuff i fill my box with. There are loads out there enough to last all through a nighter and dance non stop
Guest Polyvelts Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Pretty sure Ady C plays Bobby Bland 'these hands small but mighty' at the 100 club. A very special record ! Anyone with a pocket full of change that wants to start a soul 45 collection should start with this. I remember years ago at 100 club having an urge to hear 'sweet sherry' , asked Ady and he played it next record, it's not all about the rarity.
KevH Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 You mean "Austin ambassador Y Reg" ?? We are going to get in trouble soon from the we are the mods!! :-) Off topic posts and that. Ok reason....my brother always called me Reg Molehusband when I was learning to drive and when I had scooters...based on the old PIF. Since the internet was invented (I work in IT) I have always been Reg. That's it really Bloody mystique lost now...hahaha!! Nod to John Shuttleworth. 1
Quinvy Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Here is the world's best £10 record. I can't believe anyone could not like this. It is very special. That's in a completely different league Pete.

pogo paul Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 All of these were £5 for years, no price on quality
Frankie Crocker Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 this should never be played out..........how dreary is this.............as far as big names go once they,ve played their big hitters most run out of ideasDisagree. It's a decent track to follow a few up- tempo numbers. Sure it's not in the Same class as I Love Her So Much It Hurts Me but it is a good track that I've had for 20 years and would not object to hearing in public.
Frankie Crocker Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 thats better.................anyone should see the difference between that and the majestics track........thats why we drive 200miles north when london is only 45 south........because the noth is like syl johnson all night long cheap or expensive whilst the south is like the majestics until about 3 when folk go home on that bus sooty has lol.....sorry but trueGordon - you could be right but is this because the London scene is stale or the north overlooks mid-pace records? In all probability, there are more Northern aficionados beyond Watford keeping the scene alive in The Midlands, North West and beyond whereas London suffers from having fewer followers, too few venues, reluctant travellers and a pre- eminent monthly allnighter that dominates the local scene.

Popular Post Steve Ss Posted October 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 26, 2013 Last one, off to watch the idiot box.... top tune... Back on topic....... I would rather hear an hour of things like this than the top 500 or an hour of "dick waving" "look what I've got"top jock-cheque book". It's called using your imagination and doing something different. It is what the Northern scene (Rare or whatever other bloody pigeon hole you wanna file it in) was built on. I love it when I hear things like this been played. Hearing something I don't know ~ that I've then gotta go buy ~ should be the reason why any one one of us still has an interest in this music. Off to walk the dog. 7
Shimmy45 Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Being in Australia and holed up in a country town, I don't play strictly Northern nights, but i often drop tunes like this when I'm in amongst the bright lights and big cities. Probably over-played to some, loved by others. I have no idea, but some folks seem to like them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzE3nGbGVVA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMT3eWdeZdc 1
Popular Post Philt Posted October 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 26, 2013 (edited) There are people out there who consistently play high class sets / records that not everyone else does (and which aren't necessarily all worth a fortune). Takes considerable effort, knowledge and skill to do that I reckon. As Gareth said earlier, they all cost the same to make didn't they. Still under 20 quid and as good as most IMHO https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ukz1qXz7RUo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j9cKbsBveE&feature=player_detailpage Edited October 26, 2013 by PhilT 5
Guest penny Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 .....So it's just the ladies that like my type of tunes......Terry's gonna have a field day Damn, damn, damn Len Better than it being just the blokes, trust me. I call that relentless aggressive uptempo stuff 'lad - soul'. Not that I dont like it , but like any sane person, I like some variety. And I'm not even a sane person.
Dave Pinch Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 mick smith never had to play catch up..being the guy from stotfold..even when a lot of tunes were 1st played up north..mick already had them..as for the uk stuff nobody even comes close to him 3
Popular Post Shaun W Posted October 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 26, 2013 This isn't rare, not when compared to records where only a handful exist, but all things are relative. There are certainly loads of more expensive records that are much more readily available than this, low on value, but definitely not on quality. https://youtu.be/BTjIi803Bhk 5

Not quite right. The scene is much more fragmented in London, there are loads of nights run by various long timers, scene returnees, ex mods etc. Whilst we don't tend to have the "nostalgia" element either....what we do have is on one level excellent gigs like Marco S's and Leona's, and at the other extreme former mods / returnees playing boots. And it's not all northern either small 70s / crossover venues exist as well.....Allnighter wise there is the well supported Crossfire and there is of course the 100 Club. Fewer people yes, but not the same "nostaliga scene" confusing things either. There's certainly no bus loads of hand baggers turning up for a good Saturday night out with "The Snake"..... Popular Post Russ Vickers Posted October 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 26, 2013 (edited) It really f*ckin gets my goat when people slag of certain records or tempos. Yes, we all have an opinion & I really do respect that, altho I may not agree with you, but to write off records people have taken the trouble to include in thier sets & post here, with disrespectful comments is bad form IMHO, to say some of them dont fill dance floors or arnt appreciated is complete bollox, in a lot of cases they do & are. I've been travelling all over the country for many, many years, I travel north & south & in between, I enjoy all kinds of danceable soul music & many different genres & tempos from several different decades.....there is only two types of soul music...good n bad !.....on the whole the places I visit tend to play the mixture I enjoy & mix tempos & genres, to say the North predominantly plays up tempo NS & the South plays predominantly mid tempo is a falacy.... I'm quite suprised that people actually believe this....I really dont want to fall out with people over this, some of you I count as friends & really do respect you in general, but I know cos I attend these events.... If you personally dont like a record, thats absolutely fine, but to write it off completely as a 'play' record, just cos you dont like it personally isnt fair..... Now f*ckin play nice please.... Patto Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Inexpensive, still ticks the boxes! C & H Carbo Hayden thats a fantastic record.Maybe cheap but its hard to track down.It took me ages to get one and i eventually found one in France.Incidently the instrumental of it by The Castle Band called Little Floridy was a Stafford spin from Guy Hennigan i think 1

Both Nighters are brilliant, but slightly different....lots go n enjoy both without having to feel they need to make a choice, I really don't see the 100 Club as being a mid tempo venue at all, on the whole its about the same variety as any where else...what I would say tho, is there are records played at both venues that are unique to them....
