I call that 'Gotcha Gotcha' Soul - I like it (but not all night) It certainly keeps a place 'going' - I'll give Gordon that. Quinvy
Quality soul is never cheap, but it can be inexpensive. My favourite Dj's have always been able to throw in the occasional, and sometimes more than occasional, less expensive tune into their sets, it's very much part of what makes them quality DJ's. However, it doesn't matter if you're buying records at £10 or £1000 the only thing that you can't buy is taste, and having great taste is the thing that separates a smallish group of Premier League DJ's from the rest. Hear, hear. Nail on head time. Edited October 25, 2013 by Quinvy 1 Link to comment Social source share
Quinvy
Spent a big part of my DJ career following him... and resetting em (...along with the Pitch control). Gotta love the man. Sean Exactly! he's a very nice man, but he wouldn't get near the decks at any nighter of mine. You're only as good as your last set in my opinion, and history counts for nothing. Quinvy
Like I said it's constructive criticism, not personal attacks. The scene is stale and controlled by cliques of individuals and long time Dj's who are worshipped for what they once were, not what they are now. Someone mentioned James Trouble, and although I don't agree with a lot of what he did, he was at least trying to give the scene a kick up the arse, which it really, really needs. Popular Post Shaun W
Hi Gaz, that's not strictly true. there's a collectors angle here too. A lot of us have played sizeable sums for good unknowns, either on spec or because they are unknown and hence by definition rare....But I do agree everyone is on a journey and everyone is at a different stage of that journey. One man's great £10 find is another's moment of boredom. We are all in different places. Also there is a massive difference between "rare" and "in demand". Rare is the most over used word I've ever heard (apart from "across the board").....basically used to describe any record more than £20. Plenty of these so called "rare" records are not rare at all and plenty of genuine good quality rare records aren't even on most people's radars. So very true, I know a fair bit about the records I own and those I wish to own but in the grand scheme of things I can accept that I really know f*ck all. However, I’m still able to discuss, on a regular basis, records of mine that some of my friends don't know and in return they put me onto things that I've never heard before; that's part of the joy of hunting down and collecting records. JM recently said, quite genuinely and sincerely, to a close friend of mine who he was doing some insurance work with, that one of the joys of his business, even now, is that every week he still comes across records that he'd not heard before. I feel the same, but I'm hearing stuff that's new to me every day. I don’t think that, for the majority of us, there’s any danger of us ever running out of records to listen to that are new to our ears. Unfortunately, as the soul population reaches ever advancing years I do see us running out of people who listen to these records though. Will the last man please turn out the lights? Naturally for those KTF, It’ll never be over for me, Northern Soul - it’s a way of life, Right On Soul Brother / Sister types then I apologise for talking complete B*ll*cks. 5 Link to comment Social source share

Popular Post Kev Cane
Sorry for sounding negative chaps but its something about the "scene" that has bugged me and influenced my whole thinking about it, as time went on I got to realise that it wasn,t what was playing but rather "who" was playing it. Sick of hearing about so called "Big" DJ playing cheap record then everyone saying he,s "innovative" or and "cutting edge" when the same record (and more alike) being played by someone else, reaction being a few admiring nods of the head by a few but mostly, total ignorance to the "insignificant small fry" in my book, the "small fry" is the innovative one, rather than the obvious playing of trophy records which isn,t really clever (to me that is) A lot of the threads on here now in my opinion lead to the same conclusion, most people are influenced by "who" and not "what", hence the ever more frequently used term "sheep" Kev 13 Link to comment Social source share

Guest penny
Could you please elaborate so I may avoid any further transgression. I would hate to think that I have made the strange world of Northern Soul sound weirder than it is. I'm not talking about northern soul only - soul music doesnt begin and end with the northern scene - but general soul djing practice. On one hand there are people putting lots if work in trying to find lost gems and exclusive tunes to make their dj sets unique, on the other hand there is the fetishisation of rarity. Both occur but arent the same thing. My rule was always : For expensive / rare records - would you still like it / play it if it was cheap / common For cheap records - would you pay at least 100 quid for it, if it was rarer. t If the answer to either is 'no' then the record's no good enough. Pete S
You know when you see a record all over the place and it's only a fiver or a tenner and you automatically think it's probably that cheap for a reason? I'm ashamed to say I do that a lot. I did it with this record which I'd had off and on for 20 years but NEVER EVEN PLAYED IT. I really was shocked when I did. A lovely little fingersnapper, and while not as good as a couple of his other's, it's still well worth a listen (Chubby Checker - You Better Believe It baby - not the Joe Tex song) 1 Link to comment Social source share
