The hilarious thing is nowhere does it say its the story of Wigan, nowhere does she claim she went, and nowhere does it say Martin Scorsese was actually a physcotic paranoid taxi driver with a Mohican. Wonder if we should tell him his methods are wrong.......

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Actually the film is set around the casino between 74 & 75 and it did come across in the documentry the other night that Elaine was saying she went to Wigan, but after a conversation we had at a friends 50th I can tell you she did;nt.

Not sure why any of that changes anything I said. Taking my Scorsese example further, (I am a fan in case its not obvious), one of my favourite books is Age of Innocence, and Martin does a very good filmed version of it, New York plays a huge part in the story and is part of the success but its not a film about New York, and guess what, Martin wasn't even born when it was set, never mind living in NY.

 

I know Elaine fairly well, so you don't have to tell me anything, and one of the things I think she has done brilliantly is not get caught up in what she has done or not, I would imagine because she knows fine well their would be lots of people looking to pick the head of a needle size hole in anything she said, In what I have seen she has just talked about her passion for the music and the dancing and peoples passion for the whole thing. Which most people that know Elaine would verify. So if it came over in a documentary I suspect it wasn't intentional, as you say she actually told you direct her experience. What more do you want?

 

As Mr G says above, virtually no-one cares about this, its all about the talent as a filmmaker surely?

I think it's a bit weird that soul source once again falls to bickering amongst itself about a film none of us have seen yet. I don't know Elaine but do know some of the young 'uns who have been involved in the film and who have told me about the lengths that she has gone to in order to make it authentic. She's made a film about something that has been part of my life for 30+ years.

 

When it comes out, I hope I love it. I expect I will. Even if I don't, I will be very grateful that she tried so hard.

No, I said nowhere did it say it was the story of Wigan. Hugely different emphasis. I have explained the context, carry on nitpicking, as the chap above says, there will be people who want to pick fault no  matter.

I'm very opimistic, going by what I seen at KGH, the dancers, the look and the feel of the actors, even the hair, it just had it all, it felt right.

No one is really expecting anything other than a faily acurate historical cultual depiction are they?

Throw in a good narrative to glue it together, then we are all happy aren't we?

Well that'll be enough for me, oh, and some good music.

We can tend to get a little precious here, whats the point of that?

Have a little faith in the filmaker, its a labour of love, and that'll be the difference.

there was no promt from me, I cringed when he said he'd seen it, ' er your into that soul shite arent you? I saw this film the other night.....' My point is even from that, (soulboy) he got it, travelling to dance, the focus on music, turning away from beer culture, its all there Perhaps like you intonated that is the story, the very concept of underground music culture in this shitepop era is sensational enough to interest people.

Your mate's comment made me cringe as he was into the dance scene but in another decade - why no empathy or even a bit of Faith and Understanding? I am looking forward to the soundtrack of the movie, the dance scenes, old fashions, travel escapades, humour amongst friends etc, in other words, the things Soul Boy scored well on, pleasing plenty of us on SS. Personally, I expect the movie to provoke a 'Commitments' film reaction when those oblivious to soul music, speak up and say what great sounds were played, and we can feel smug because we knew that all along.

Just a quick mention that I was briefly involved with the soulboy film as a dancer (before fecking off back home due to is being so terrible) and they didn't give a shit about getting the dancing or clapping right. It was shambolic.

I'm not one for sitting through any old shite then being content with an ok outcome. I thought Soulboy was a disgrace in every possible way.

Northern Soul is a film drama; it isn’t a documentary, so I don’t understand why so many — without having seen it — want to pass judgement on it as if it were a documentary.

 

I personally love Quadrophenia as a film, I know some don’t, and I’m not suggesting it’s the best film ever made, but it’s a favourite of mine. It isn’t a 100% accurate depiction of the 1960’s mod scene in London but that doesn’t detract from my enjoyment of the film.

 

For some it’s always going to be easier to be a critic than a creative.

Thanks for posting. Always good to get the perspective from someone on the inside.....my perspective was from the other side of the screen in the Cinema....didn't know about the shambles...altho now you mention it, I seem to recall Karen B telling me something similar....

I will go and see the film. However, the book is a thinly disguised charged for promo/advert for the film. It is very subjective and doesn't dig really deep. Some of the photos are OK though

Actually, the first half of the film was shot in black and white 35mm, it contained lots of B&E, dodgy dealings in dark places, nicking cars, people being robbed at razor point, the odd mass brawl in the early hours, motorway service stations and loads of dead cool lads and girls with not a vest, badge or baggy trouser to be seen all to a fantastic music backdrop. Then, a youth with big mutton chops wearing a button down shirt with a faded Lee Rider jacket with black driving gloves sticking out the top pocket saw the camera man, went over and wacked him, nicked the camera, film and all; so all's left is the more modern footage.

Give the girl a break, whether she went or not, if she's had the commercial acumen to get a book out at the same time full of anecdotes by people who actually were there at the time to support the film, then well done to her and hope it helps recuperate some of the £800k that she's invested.

Now, where's those gloves.................
