totally agree but you also need a plot that transends its setting for it to have any appeal beyond a northern soul audience.

Who cares about the masses - let them watch Grand Theft Auto. If the movie pleases the soul critics, it has a chance of crossing over to a wider audience so let's hope it it realises it's potential. I liked Blue Juice and Soul Boy as they were fillums pet ie entertainment, culture, a bit of a caper, not a matter of life or death, but something that's been created for our appreciation so let's look ahead to enjoying the movie and save the analysis until later...

You know nothing about her, the dedication she has shown into making the film, and the film hasn't even come out yet, and you are already there with the snyde remarks..Class act...

snide ? not at all, btw  i never said i did know anything about her , i heard that the film maker went to wigan i also heard the film maker didn't go to wigan, i was interested curious  is that wrong ? so the film makers age came up on wikipedia , i commented on humorous post by another person ....ffs   no mention by me of any film!! no knocking the film maker!! was just a pun on the endless amount of people that claim to have been at the casino its a long standing joke on this site  or didn't you know , class act maybe arrogant ..... never 

The hilarious thing is nowhere does it say its the story of Wigan, nowhere does she claim she went, and nowhere does it say Martin Scorsese was actually a physcotic paranoid taxi driver with a Mohican. Wonder if we should tell him his methods are wrong.......

how many times have  people on here mentioned that they went to the casino , how many times as folks made a joke about it good god get over yourselves  ,  the i went to wigan badge but actually didn't but went a few times at the end, that's the pun!!  it was about that more than anything read it again, i couldn't give a monkeys if you don't like what it says in black n white its not my fault and i ain't getting at anyone or knocking any films books or waist coats   , personally i think the woman has done well to rectify the damage already done in previous tv programs and films good luck to her

I'm really hoping it does, but that didnt come across strongly in that promo. Pete mentioned it was a story about a trip to the states, bringing back a killer tune. I just dont know if that story has a wider appeal, its pretty difficult for anyone on here to say too, cause we all are interested in that story.

I don't know Elaine, but anyone who puts all their savings into a film about "Northern Soul" is either passionate about her subject, or completely insane - Either way she gets my utmost respect for "having a go" regardless of what the finished product is like!! I know nothing about films, and usually see the family cinema outings as an excuse to have a kip, but will certainly support this film, and the effort that went into it!!!

But even on the trailer I can see parallels with dance culture that my mates on that scene would be interested in.

a mate said he'd seen soulboy on TV (is it really that bad?) and said, thats just like what we used to do at the Hac.

Me and nlsoulxx used to knock around with Elaine a bit in the 80s, she's from Bury. We used to go to the Parr Hall,Twisted Wheel to name a couple. Not that she needs me to verify her "credentials" ...plus you can just check Wikipedia!!.

Interesting edit, but since lots of people will have seen your original words its maybe worth turning that round and saying lots of peoples positivity is generally in answer to lots of personal negative comments and competely daft comments as if it is somehow it’s a history of the whole scene. And I suspect lots of the positive people are jusn't being hopeful, they actually know just how much has been invested in this film in time and passion, script reedits, career time, research to get it as right as feasible and a huge investment of someone's life. The cash-in jibes particularly are so hilarously unfounded its pretty hard not get to defensive in all honesty. So to me most of the positivity seems based on some knowledge, whereas most of the negative seems to be based on things people are making up

It just seems to be more people want to knock it just because they can, and for me, before I get accused of having a vested interet in being friends, I said the same for SoulBoy when it was first talked about and same for Paul Sadot's play, albeit before my SS membership, and like all art there is a risk of getting over excited, one was a huge dissapointment and one massively fantastic piece of art. I will let you decide which is which.

I will say I was very lucky to see a little bit and the dancehall scene had me completely emotional, and had me right there, it was absolutely brilliant, to me that’s what it should be judged on.

I will go and see the film. However, the book is a thinly disguised charged for promo/advert for the film. It is very subjective and doesn't dig really deep. Some of the photos are OK though

Closely followed by 500 Soulies grinning at one another and going ahead and doing exactly what we've all done over the last 30-40 years. 

As far as the tongue in cheek comment re researched goes I can confirm that it really has been researched well, even down to stopping filming at various points to confirm if such and such would have happened in 1974/5 etc, fear not it's in very safe hands.

Steve, I didn't sit and watch Soulboy, and think, what a masterpiece, I enjoyed it for what it is, a little bit of frivolous entertainment, and something I'd rather watch than 'My big fat Gypsy's big brother is a Kardashian living on the Geordie Shore'. ;)

 

From what I've seen, and been told, Elaine's film looks good, the story appears to be a lot punchier and the script better written, hence me looking forward to it

Totally agree Steve, the atmosphere was fantastic throughout the whole day (and in the kebab shop after with Elaine!) and I know many were stunned at just how right it all felt. As with all things lets wait and see the film before we pass comment on its merits etc, otherwise its all a bit pointless isn't it. Look at the slaughter and abuse that Daniel Craig took when he was cast as Bond before the film hit the screen - when it did he turned out to be superb and a lot of people had to eat their words and frankly look total knobs!

I quite enjoyed Soulboy too Winnie despite all it's faults - had a good night out going to see it and having the craic in the bar afterwards - I didn't have big expectations about it being too factual so I wasn't too dissapointed. And the mass slagging of the film on here before anyone had even seen it was quite interesting. Really looking forward to the new film as it sounds like it will capture the time period more accurately.

At 22 I would say you were Grandad material at Wigan hence why me and the other 'fillers' at the KGH filming were in the shadows a lot - don't recall that many 50+ soulies at the venues i was at from '78

I'm not quite sure if they went that far Dave and knowing Saddam Smith as we do I cant see him downgrading any prices lol, but those are Taffs decks in the film too - and they broke down at one stage so - authentic! Taff was telling me they wanted a pic authenticated that it was indeed the record bar at wigan and he was able to do so - considering the arms in the pic with tats were his and the boxes were on the table in front of them now! Priceless. 

Oh, and not sure if Steve G can be heard muttering "Wheres the Modern" or not hehe
