Frankie Crocker Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 totally agree but you also need a plot that transends its setting for it to have any appeal beyond a northern soul audience.Who cares about the masses - let them watch Grand Theft Auto. If the movie pleases the soul critics, it has a chance of crossing over to a wider audience so let's hope it it realises it's potential. I liked Blue Juice and Soul Boy as they were fillums pet ie entertainment, culture, a bit of a caper, not a matter of life or death, but something that's been created for our appreciation so let's look ahead to enjoying the movie and save the analysis until later... 1
Swifty Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 When is it out , ain't been to the Flicks since Jungle Book & Love Story (Had to pretend I had Hay fever when my eyes started running ) Looking forward to boring my Mrs. and saying , I used to have that , I went there etc. etc. Swifty 2

Paul Shirley Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 (edited) You know nothing about her, the dedication she has shown into making the film, and the film hasn't even come out yet, and you are already there with the snyde remarks..Class act... snide ? not at all, btw i never said i did know anything about her , i heard that the film maker went to wigan i also heard the film maker didn't go to wigan, i was interested curious is that wrong ? so the film makers age came up on wikipedia , i commented on humorous post by another person ....ffs no mention by me of any film!! no knocking the film maker!! was just a pun on the endless amount of people that claim to have been at the casino its a long standing joke on this site or didn't you know , class act maybe arrogant ..... never The hilarious thing is nowhere does it say its the story of Wigan, nowhere does she claim she went, and nowhere does it say Martin Scorsese was actually a physcotic paranoid taxi driver with a Mohican. Wonder if we should tell him his methods are wrong....... did i say it was the story of wigan then er? no and she actually did say herself and others on her behalf that she went to wigan and did i say that she didn't go er? no, you make a lot of presumptions take a bow the chuckle brothers Edited October 9, 2013 by steptoe 1
Swifty Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 couldn't even get mine to watch this trailer I take it Mrs. Back Street Blue isn't in to the music ? Swifty
Paul Shirley Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 (edited) how many times have people on here mentioned that they went to the casino , how many times as folks made a joke about it good god get over yourselves , the i went to wigan badge but actually didn't but went a few times at the end, that's the pun!! it was about that more than anything read it again, i couldn't give a monkeys if you don't like what it says in black n white its not my fault and i ain't getting at anyone or knocking any films books or waist coats , personally i think the woman has done well to rectify the damage already done in previous tv programs and films good luck to her Edited October 9, 2013 by steptoe 1
Manfromsoul45s Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Oh I'm sorry, you were flirting with humour?. Don't need to look her up
Back Street Blue Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I take it Mrs. Back Street Blue isn't in to the music ? Swifty comes to all the do's with me and always gravitates to the modern room if there is one, but just over-faced by my preoccupation with it.......I think? 1
Geeselad Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 And why are you assuming that it doesn't? I'm really hoping it does, but that didnt come across strongly in that promo. Pete mentioned it was a story about a trip to the states, bringing back a killer tune. I just dont know if that story has a wider appeal, its pretty difficult for anyone on here to say too, cause we all are interested in that story.
Guest Byrney Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Nah, your comment was snide in that you had a dig saying something like she could be one of those who went to Station Road instead of Sesame Street. Sure Wikipedia didn't give you the sterling example of quality humour.

Popular Post Md Records Posted October 8, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 8, 2013 I don't know Elaine, but anyone who puts all their savings into a film about "Northern Soul" is either passionate about her subject, or completely insane - Either way she gets my utmost respect for "having a go" regardless of what the finished product is like!! I know nothing about films, and usually see the family cinema outings as an excuse to have a kip, but will certainly support this film, and the effort that went into it!!! Des 10
Geeselad Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I agree, I'd imagine the plot does although like all of us I've only got this brief trailer to go on. But even on the trailer I can see parallels with dance culture that my mates on that scene would be interested in. a mate said he'd seen soulboy on TV (is it really that bad?) and said, thats just like what we used to do at the Hac.
Guest Byrney Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 It is really that bad, not just on a Northern subject level but in terms of plot, sub plot, set and so far away from Fac 51 it's untrue mate.
Guest Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 The new film got a good review on Loose Women in the week from John Thompson actor think he's Terry who is the Dj in the film spoke well about Elaine etc ?
Reg Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Me and nlsoulxx used to knock around with Elaine a bit in the 80s, she's from Bury. We used to go to the Parr Hall,Twisted Wheel to name a couple. Not that she needs me to verify her "credentials" ...plus you can just check Wikipedia!!. Film looks fab, hope it does well.
Popular Post jocko Posted October 8, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 8, 2013 in fairness, yep your right, it needs room to breath a little.Interesting edit, but since lots of people will have seen your original words its maybe worth turning that round and saying lots of peoples positivity is generally in answer to lots of personal negative comments and competely daft comments as if it is somehow it’s a history of the whole scene. And I suspect lots of the positive people are jusn't being hopeful, they actually know just how much has been invested in this film in time and passion, script reedits, career time, research to get it as right as feasible and a huge investment of someone's life. The cash-in jibes particularly are so hilarously unfounded its pretty hard not get to defensive in all honesty. So to me most of the positivity seems based on some knowledge, whereas most of the negative seems to be based on things people are making upIt just seems to be more people want to knock it just because they can, and for me, before I get accused of having a vested interet in being friends, I said the same for SoulBoy when it was first talked about and same for Paul Sadot's play, albeit before my SS membership, and like all art there is a risk of getting over excited, one was a huge dissapointment and one massively fantastic piece of art. I will let you decide which is which.I will say I was very lucky to see a little bit and the dancehall scene had me completely emotional, and had me right there, it was absolutely brilliant, to me that’s what it should be judged on.I do agree with you, it will stand on its story as a film and all along I have said lets judge it as a film, however lets give it a chance. And lets be honest if we judged all our films story on the trailers then I suspect we would watch a lot of Hollywood turkeys 4
Phild Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I will go and see the film. However, the book is a thinly disguised charged for promo/advert for the film. It is very subjective and doesn't dig really deep. Some of the photos are OK though
Guest uroffal Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I think the plot is that they go to America to discover the greatest record ever and bring it back to the UK? I look forward to the endless argument about the credentials of 'the greatest record ever' then :-D

She, like myself, certainly grew up in the 7ts and was probably surrounded by the culture at least. I do have some apprehensions based on this trailer, the previous one was brilliant, and I actually thought soulboy wasnt that bad, it had some humour at least and it was set in an actual soul city. 1

I saw this film the other night.....' My point is even from that, (soulboy) he got it, travelling to dance, the focus on music, turning away from beer culture, its all there Perhaps like you intonated that is the story, the very concept of underground music culture in this shitepop era is sensational enough to interest people. 1
Steve G Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I am not understanding the negativity here.....frankly if Wikipedia is now the source for assessing someones credentials to make a film, then we're all doomed. 3

Really looking forward to the film, from the clips I've seen I think I'll enjoy it and there's certainly nothing in the trailers that fills me with dread.... strike that, I did see an extra clap put into Duke Browner, so I will now question whether it's been researched properly........ It's a film, let's all watch it in it's entirety then talk about it 1

Wasn't Russ the consultant on that? Tells you all you need to know, but he's not on here to defend himself so I'll stop there.... You can't draw a comparison. The attention to detail that has gone into the new film to make it as accurate a recreation of a moment in time nearly 40 years ago is quite amazing. 1

Closely followed by 500 Soulies grinning at one another and going ahead and doing exactly what we've all done over the last 30-40 years. As far as the tongue in cheek comment re researched goes I can confirm that it really has been researched well, even down to stopping filming at various points to confirm if such and such would have happened in 1974/5 etc, fear not it's in very safe hands. Oh and Steve 'Schofield' G and Taffy were also on hand so nuff said! Edited October 9, 2013 by TheBigO 2

Steve, I didn't sit and watch Soulboy, and think, what a masterpiece, I enjoyed it for what it is, a little bit of frivolous entertainment, and something I'd rather watch than 'My big fat Gypsy's big brother is a Kardashian living on the Geordie Shore'. ;) From what I've seen, and been told, Elaine's film looks good, the story appears to be a lot punchier and the script better written, hence me looking forward to it 3

TheBigO Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 No problem Winnie, understood that. It just made me laugh when the guy came out and said that there needs to be a clap at XXX min and again at XXX min! I was tempted to whiplash him with my fancy dress (yet strangely attractive) baggies! Picky? Us? Surely you jest sir 1
Steve S 60 Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 If the filming I witnessed at KGH last year is anything to go by, it certainly won't be a tea break production. They took a whole day to film two scenes. There was a real buzz amongst the youngsters on the dance floor, this being the culmination of all the dance clubs they'd attended over the previous years. If they can capture the atmosphere in that hall onto celluloid, then I believe they'll have something special. 1

Totally agree Steve, the atmosphere was fantastic throughout the whole day (and in the kebab shop after with Elaine!) and I know many were stunned at just how right it all felt. As with all things lets wait and see the film before we pass comment on its merits etc, otherwise its all a bit pointless isn't it. Look at the slaughter and abuse that Daniel Craig took when he was cast as Bond before the film hit the screen - when it did he turned out to be superb and a lot of people had to eat their words and frankly look total knobs! 1

And the mass slagging of the film on here before anyone had even seen it was quite interesting. Really looking forward to the new film as it sounds like it will capture the time period more accurately. 1

macca Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 , i read she was born in 1965 that would make her about 8 when it started and 16 the year it closed , perhaps part of the 200 million mistook station rd for sesame street I was 14.5 years in February 1975 when I first attended said club with one of the moderators on this site. He's six months older than me so was evidently quite ancient when he visited the place in the summer of 1974. I've been green with envy ever since. So, going by your esteemed calculations, the maker of the film was comparatively ancient when she passed through those hallowed swingdoors in its latter period. I think we're going to love it... 1

I'm not quite sure if they went that far Dave and knowing Saddam Smith as we do I cant see him downgrading any prices lol, but those are Taffs decks in the film too - and they broke down at one stage so - authentic! Taff was telling me they wanted a pic authenticated that it was indeed the record bar at wigan and he was able to do so - considering the arms in the pic with tats were his and the boxes were on the table in front of them now!
