Derek Pearson Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 An imaginary project called Dream Sleeves If I was something like an Art & Design Teacher at a Soul Music History Museum I’d set my students a project to inspire their imagination. To see who could design the best company sleeve for a variety of labels who — as far as we know - never actually had any. Their interpretation of ‘this is how they could’ve looked like’. For me personally there’s a whole raft of Detroit based labels that I’d love to see company sleeves for — Big Wheel, Ric Tic, Golden World, the list is endless etc etc etc. Further afield a sleeve for the legendary Shrine label is one I suspect many would love to see and own. In fact most of the labels from this city which we avidly chase and collect never came wrapped inside a company sleeve did they? It’s time like these that I wish I was a competent artist but I’m not, these days I struggle to draw a pair of curtains... And with a little bit of imagination it wouldn’t take much to knock up a rough idea of what the sleeve could’ve looked like would it? We’re starting from a good place as we know both the design and the primary colours they regularly used. So what labels do you wish there was a company sleeve for? With there being such a booming market for reproduction sleeves I’m surprised nobody has started selling ‘what could’ve been’, ‘what should’ve been’ dream sleeves. Mmmm now there’s a business idea. Anais nin Carms Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 You and I are on the same wave length Derek I had a similar thought ...mine was to create a sleeve picture art form that has an identity with the song rather than the record label , can you imagine all those little works of art in one box. I would love to see some other peoples ideas put to sleeves...could there now be a rush on white sleeves ? as they are a great blank canvas I think I might get my water colors out and give it a go
Paul Dunn Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Hi Derek, A friend of mine made me a Drew sleeve attached and is in the process of making a sur-shot. Regards Paulscan0235.pdf 1

dthedrug Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 HI ALL Some record dealers have already had a go at this, it's a bit late for me to use the scanner, but I have seen many records advertised in the TOP POPS sleeve that EMI sent out as RUSH RELEASE 45s, and records in company sleeves like KING & BLUEBEAT that were not used on any rare soul records in the case of KING, but they do look good in, & a original BLUEBEAT sleeve is very rare in the original wavy top thin paper style, the TROJAN records have a good sleeve design that they used since the millennium . I have an early ISLAND sleeve that is rare, but it would be nice to have a ISLAND sleeve that copied the SUE label, other rare sleeves I have are from PAMA a PAMS GAS, & NU BEAT sleeves are very rare, so the idea is great as the chances of finding such rare sleeves today are zilch DAVE K
Robbk Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 (edited) Maybe we could also have a Leiber & Stoller Productions sleeve for Daisy and Tiger, Red Bird and Blue Cat records. Then, I could take all my US Red Birds out of the UK Red Bird sleeves I've accumulated. I'd also like sleeves for Kent Records, so I can take them out of the old Modern Records sleeves, and Money Records for Cash and Money records. We also need company sleeves for Keen Records, and SAR Records for SAR/Derby records, also Dig Records, United and States Records, Lenox Records, BobDan Productions for Red Robin/Holiday/Vest/Everlast/Fury/Fire etc., Sue Records for Sue/Symbol/Eastern/Broadway/Crackerjack/AFO Records, Highland Records, Dore Records, Flip Records, Music City Records, Ebb Records, Arvee Records, Bruce Records, Hull Records for Hull and Mascot, Glory Records, Recorded in Hollywood Records, Hollywood Records, Swing Time Records, Leo Austell Productions for Renee/Sta-Set/Mar-Jan/Vick/Conduc/Jerhart/Toi/Big 3/Hawk/Toi, Marvello Records, Edited October 7, 2013 by RobbK

Derek Pearson Posted October 6, 2013 Author Posted October 6, 2013 (edited) As far as I know this San Antonio, Texas based label never had any specific company sleeves during it's lifespan. Is this the closest they ever got to one? Derek Blimey I'd forgotten just how expensive Soul Bowl was at the time I bought this.......... Edited October 6, 2013 by Derek Pearson
