JOE TORQUAY Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Telma Laverne Baby Don't You Leave Me C/w He's A Lucky Guy A Northern Soul Detroit Grail we have the greatest pleasure in showing off. You are viewing one of the most-preposterously RARE Northern Soul 45’s to ever emerge from the Motor City. A Johnnie Mae Matthews project that only a handful of collectors can crow of ever owning. The soundfile will reveal this is just not an inconceivable rarity but also delivers spectacular Soul-Sister Northern Soul on BOTH sides! Do not pass by, seeing another copy in my lifetime could be a forlorn wish.. The vinyl on the a-side is Mint - totally without blemish. The flipside vinyl has one light surface mark NOT affecting play, both labels are perfect. Let’s get serious! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 1,206.00 Edwin Starr Agent Oo-soul (agent Double-o-soul) Ric-Tic addicts, here is the VERY FIRST press of this iconic 45. Decorated with the ORIGINAL TITLE that was quickly replaced as allegedly local DJ’s kept mispronouncing it into various forms e.g. Agent-OOOOH-Soul This is the abandoned Lemon coloured label parading the rarely seen text “Agent OO-Soul (Agent Double-O-Soul)” ZTSC matrix “trainspotters” can also note Columbia’s practice of changing masterplates at regular intervals and upping the last matrix letter by one will also be interested to know this withdrawn copy is from the very first run with matrix ZTSC104309 1 “A” with ZTSC104314 1 “A” stamped into the flipside. So rush and see which masterplate your copy came from; we have had copies as high as ZTSC104309 1 “F” but of course it will not be wearing this VERY RARE 1st. variation of the title. This listing is especially aimed at the Detroit-Obsessives who just need to know & own EVERYTHING, because it’s interesting…. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 155.00 Susan Singer Bobby's Lovin' Touch Looking back to my formative years of record dealing I was very interested in the Belgium “Popcorn” scene. Daly City Bob was bootlegging some in-demand titles. Robert Van D Hove was leafleting what seemed the whole of the USA with his weird and wonderful wants list and we even witnessed some very smartly dressed but bemused “Popcorn” collectors visiting Cleethorpes Pier, agog at crazy Brits going berserk to what they thought was speeded-up soul (well it was in a way) So how equally bemused was I, when Robert Van De Hove kindly escorted me to a Popcorn Club in Gent, Belgium. Where I witnessed girls & boys dancing together (how weird) to moody down-right dirty productions. Which by the end of the night I was enamored with… Susan Singer was on Robert’s now famous “Wants List”. As hard as I tried, as much junkin’ for 45s as I could do, I never found a copy! So today I’m pretty pleased to be able to let you hear 1962 UK production that was then a major “Popcorn” want and today sounds better than ever, as “Popcorn” has slowly but surely crept into Northern Soul again widening the spectrum of our underground music. We are sure you will adore this RARE 45 in magnificent condition …but dancing with girls is still not an option. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 198.00 Pro-fascination Overpowering Love C/w Something On My Mind Vocal group excellence giving up two precisely constructed harmony sides covering dance & Sweet Soul. “Overpowering Love” is a tricky, infectious soulful stepper decorated with subtle horns peppered with a multitude of different vocal all tightly fitting into seamless harmony! Now with your expectations heightened, you just know when the slow side starts that silky proficiency will carry over to the other style.. and how. The flip is lush, dreamy, utterly luscious milky Sweet Soul.. cooled by some impressive icy vocal pitches.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 75.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 Chris Clark Love's Gone Bad C/w Put Yourself In My Place Non-hit tough to find 1966 British release in fine clean condition sporting the original company sleeve. This is a TMG that many Motown collections are missing, but DJ’s will also know both sides are also well received by the Northern Soul dancefloor when played. A 45 drippiing with desirability on several fronts, that will also prick the attention of the Tamla Motown serial up-graders Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 104.00 Taste Got To Get Better Silly-obscure 1983 Ohio D.I.Y. group-soul dance tune. Strong lead vocal soars over a jazz influenced production - Ramsey & Co. style piano work blends into string arrangement with subtle vocal chorus melting into the proceedings, then towards the end the whole groove is lifted by an inspired inclusion of a girl-group chorus. 80s street soul does not get any obscurer, a private press that most-likely never got passed relatives & friends. DJ’s seeking something cool very few others own - this ticks those boxes for sure.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 61.00 Festival Something In Your Smile C/w Let's Make Love Ridiculously RARE 1978 British indie, with both sides offering up exhilarating Northern Soul 70s dance benefiting from what sounds like a black lead-vocal. As far as we can ascertain this is the “last” 45 release for this mystery label who’s short-7”-life spanned from 1977 to 1978, releasing “novelty” orientated singles and then moving into the independent album market. We no nothing about the group and very little about the label, except every release is rare, obviously only doing extremely limited runs of their product. For the British 45 completist this 45 is essential, for the enterprising 70s orientated NS DJ this disc bubbles with life and potential. so RARE and in immaculate condition.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 98.00 Impressions Ridin' High Not only perhaps the most-frameable Soul album cover ever created. But also the rare 1966 British press in showroom condition! The iconic 3 sports car pose, on the desirable original MONO press dressed with those gorgeous HMV labels. But more LP is so much more than that. It also boasts 14 tracks many not issued on 45, and covering Billy Butler, Major Lance, Gene Chandler and walter Jackson recordings injecting their own especially slick harmony to them. A killer album on so many levels - so when we say condition could not be finer, we now expect strong interest for ownership. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 156.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 Bobby Guitar Bennett You Did It Again C/w Evol (love Spelled Backwards) Seldom-seen testament to the seemingly boundless skills of the late great Bobby Martin who wrote both sides for Kae William’s highly regarded label. A former 80’s cover-up for DJ Guy Hennigan, who picked well when he announced it as Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes. Because Bobby Martin’s “Get Out” style intro seemed the obvious choice of pseudonym, Bobby’s husky slow vocal intro suddenly explodes into a horn-saturated mid-tempo Northern Soul beauty that fitted that purist Stafford era so perfectly. We suggest this 45 is ripe for a DJ turntable revisit - to turn heads and impress just like it did in 1985 as Harold Melvin.. NOTE. The promo of this 45 DO NOT carry the good side just the aggressive R&B thumper EVOL - making this title even more difficult to snare. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 389.00 C. P. Love You Call The Shots C/w Plenty Of Room For More You are viewing one of Deep Soul’s Holy Grails an insane rare New Orleans Earl King creation offering down-on-your-knees beseeching soul one side and a supremely emotional mid-tempo on the other. C. P. has that style of vocal that reaches right into your heart, with his unintentional quavering the occasional crack all add to his convincing conveying of the lyrics. This is real-soul for real-soul-collectors. Deep as you like, flip it, and it’s as smooth as you like it. Both sides scream from the heart, from the streets, from New Orleans Soul! and a Rare as it gets… Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 80.00 Sound-masters Lonely Lonely C/w I Want You To Be My Baby If you like me favor the 60s vocal-group sound, especially if it’s an upbeat dance production. You’ll already know exactly how good this East Los Angeles rarity is. A five man gathering who wrote both sides, guided by a man who bequeathed so many wonderful records to Northern Soul; James Carmichael who’s talent was rewarded when his services were snapped up by Motown when they re-located to L.A. in the 70s. So back to the music, lead vocalist is another Northern Soul hero Morris Chestnut who’s instantly recognizable “Too Darn Soulful” vocal fits snugly into the mid-paced easy going dance arrangement which Mr. Carmichael ratchets up, allowing Morris to harness and strut through his impassioned range. This is absolutely FANTASTIC Northern Soul showcasing an aqueous harmony reinforcement behind a spectacular mood-changing lead voice. Flip it over the pace dives into a funeral-stride as Morris and the gang deliver a suicide-inducing soul ballad. Can I go overboard? and state, I think these two sides offering both aspects of the male-vocal-group sound, are hard to better… Condition of vinyl and labels is flawless. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 387.00 Melvin Davis I Must Love You C/w Still In My Heart AUTOGRAPHED by Melvin Davis copy - in immaculate condition! The label scan & the double-helping of delish-Detroit just speak for themselves.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 306.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 Marvin Gaye In The Groove DJ’s looking to impress the crown with some new Tamla Motown dancefloor food check out the total dance soundfile of tracks perfect for the hoards. This would be a monster Tamla Motown collector piece also but one track “There Goes My Baby” has a mark on it that clicks. Fortunately it’s perhaps the least desirable track on the album - a shame because the rest of the vinyl is a beautiful flaw free. Labels are perfect, cover front and back are really tidy, retains original “advert” inner sleeve. But most-import checkout the sound clip of Motown sessions that are ready for the DJ to floor the crowd with: 1. Tear It On Down - not on 45 2. Change What You Can - released as a flipside but mostly unknown 3. It’s Love I Need - not on 45 4. Every Now And Then - not on 45, a total killer! Northern Soul candidate MONO 1968 original offering some killer tunes other than his hit of that year “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 40.00 The Road To Wigan Casino The Road To Wigan Casino - Souvenir Wigan Casino archeologists here is something so very interesting! an 8 page booklet/story of a girl’s first experience of Northern Soul all-niter and Wigan Casino the effect it had on her. I’ve personally never seen this before and I can tell you it makes riveting-reading. Written in 1981 and published by BABYLON BOOKS of Manchester the same year. Written by a mysterious “Pauline” aided by her friend “Martin” We imagine not many of this actually survived over the last 32 years.. We think for the Wiganist, this may be your one and only chance of ownership… PS if anyone know who the author (Pauline) or (Martin) are, please let us know. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 30.00 E. Rodney Jones R & B Time Part 1 & 2 For the discerning Northern Soul collector who seeks out the very rarest alternative labels to own their Northern Soul classics on - you are viewing one of the “impossibles” Whether it be Baby Huey on SHANN, Benny Harper on GEMINI, Saxie Russell on TOMAS etc. there is a hugely gratifying aura surrounding these rarely if ever witnessed variations. Here is a Torch, Catacombs & Blackpool Mecca dance-floor anthem from the Golden era of Northern Soul in an attire very few have seen in the “flesh” and far fewer can boast of owning. One for the astute collector who appreciates the label as much as the music and it’s pedigree. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 462.00
