Since the likes of Kent & Expansion came on the scene, compilation album's have made a big comeback. Their output tends to be 'themed' and the quality of most of the releases they have released harks back to 60's series from the likes of Motown, Sue & Bell (Cellarful of Soul, etc).

Some other older comps though seemed more contrived but many still contained decent tracks.

One I have always likes was put out by US Buddah Records over 40 years back. Titled 'Classmates' this brought together mainly unconnected artists / producers to end up with a 12 track ensemble.

The daft thing is, with the artists / producers being unconnected, Buddah compounded things by also miss-labeling a few of the tracks.

4 cuts off the Five Stairsteps Buddah album were included on the comp but 2 were badged up as being by Mama & Papa Stairstep (Mr & Mrs Burke). In addition, a track cut by Bongi & Judy was listed as being by Judy White (the Judy in the femme pairing who actually cut the track).

To further add to Buddah's mistakes, female singer Toni Lamarr is called Tony Lamarr on the album.

.......... MOST STRANGE .......... the quality of many of the tracks on offer can't be questioned though.

 

Anyone else care to add any other tenuous couplings on similar albums.

I picked that up at a boot sale on Hastings cricket pitch (now a shopping centre) in 1989

Got mine from the legendary David's Bookshop in the 80's and have seen sold it on but didn't notice the Tony mis-spelling at the time

Ive got loads, themed.

Dont have any tenuously linked tracks.

Usually have to sort the wheat from the chaff but theres always good ens in there somewhere I find

D-town, Mirwood, Thelma, Groovesville etc, then theres the location ones Westcoast/Phili/Detroit ones etc.

Then the themes like Millionares Only/Sought after soul/big City, love these.

Even got some Girls only ones, and got a harmony one.

Great way to hear stuff I wouldnt normally.

I think comp albums are great personally.

such a strange cover for a Soul Lp and sat alongside all those Who and Hendrix volumes - still have my copy!

Got the American version of the Sue LP - not only are is the track listing all mixed up, but the opening for the record is on the bottom edge of the sleeve - perhaps the reason there don't seem to be many copies of it about.

Sales of 'Soul Deep' Vol 2 were disappointing, it wasn't well promoted or widely circulated, maybe because it was released shortly before Contempo folded.

I had a test pressing but it wasn't easy to find a regular copy in UK stores.

 Hi All  Paul although I was an avid reader of BLUES & SOUL from 1970 onwards, & a regular visitor to CONTEMPOS in Hannaway Street  London, and know most aspects about John Abbeys involvement in labels like SUE ACTION MOJO & CONTEMPOS, I know very little about the demise of the label and the closure of the shop, like who had all the shops stock, someone got lucky, it just vanished or it's in a lock up somewhere?  DAVE K

Hello Kev, I can't forget Rumbelows because it was the only record department in town, apart from upstairs at Fine Fare, I remember buying ex-chart 45s with money which was intended for school dinner tickets.

 

And just around the corner was a favourite hang-out, the Cofficana where Gabrielle's daughter Gloria would give us free selections on the jukebox and sometimes gave us cash to buy some 45s from Rumbelows.  That was real power, getting to pick what went on the jukebox!

 

And it wasn't far from Batchelor's off-license where kids who couldn't afford a pack of ten cigarettes could buy them in smaller quantities: Batchelor would open a pack and sell loose cigarettes in twos or threes which he sold in sweet packets!  Is Geoff still around?

 

Getting back on topic, I bought many LPs at Rumbelows. Compilation LPs were a great way to find new tracks, I bought albums like 'Stax Soul Explosion', 'Taking You There' and 'Soul Bible', not to forget the EMI Sounds Superb things which were 99p I think, such as the Isley Brothers LP with 'My Love Is Your Love' on it so we could spin it at the Youth Centre.

I was writing for Black Echoes at the time and I'd pestered Contempo about doing a Volume 2 and suggested some of the tracks.

When they finally issued it (about two years after Volume 1) they sent an advance copy with a nice letter which Paul Phillips at Black Echoes kept as a rarity because Contempo were obviously rivals through their ownership of Blues & Soul.

Anyway, I don't think the WEA deal was going very well and Contempo folded soon after the LP was issued.

By the way, most copies of 'Soul Deep Volume 2' seem to turn up in Germany for some reason.

 HI ALL  About CONTEMPOS demise & going under, I was told that the receiver would have taken the stock and it was sold at auction? that's sounds plausible, however surely someone on the soul scene would know the full story, I have yet to read anything about the end of the company, a mystery for sure.

About those Motown LPs the Isley Brothers track was a reel discovery for many, back in 72 the R Dean Taylor LP was every bodies find with "there's a ghost in my house" the LP has an extra verse than the TAML MOTOWN 45, also the Steve Wonder LP had his version of "Angel Baby" not the best version, Darrell Banks was the one to get until Mick Smith found the classic by George Carrow, I'm sure you would all agree? great days when you could go hunting for dusty's buying on line is very boring in comparison.  DAVE K

Got to agree with Paul, in the early days when we were still 'wet behind the ears', compilation LP's were a great way to get introduced to new artists without too much risk (as you knew you would like some tracks coz you knew those artists but not some of the others).

The comps that helped most with my early soul education included the Sue stuff (various Sue Story volumes, Dr. Soul, Soul 66), the EMI / Bell ones (Bell Cellar of Soul Vols.1, 2 & 3), the Pye Records ones (Sing a Song of Soul, Blues & Soul,Rhythm & Blues Vol.2) and of course the Motown ones.

..... bought some of these from the top floor based record department of the Co-op in Dony back in the mid to late 60's .... before that floor was turned into 'the Attic' soul club !!!

 

But other interesting releases (though also not really containing tenuously linked tracks) that I got down the years include ........

The Action label LP 'These Kind of Blues'

 Sonet's 'The Soul of Black Music' (all gospel cuts)

The great UK Stax comp 'Boy Meets Girl' (though the US release featured more tracks as it was a double LP package)

The French series 'Rhythm & Blues Formidible' &  'Rhythm & Blues Terrible' (though these are spoiled a bit as each track runs into the next)

The Spanish Atlantic (& some Stax) releases 'Hits & Soul' 

The US East Memphis Music double LP (& cassette package) 'History of the Memphis Sound' (think a 2nd revised version of this also escaped)

A Jamaican issued Hi Records comps 'Hi Sounds Rare Collection Vol.1 & 2' (Vol.2 escaped as Hi was failing back in the US and contains tracks that aren't too cheap to obtain on original US 45's -- Quiet Elegance, Gene Anderson, Darryl Carter, Veniece)

The series of special LP's produced by record companies for the BBC (on the BBC Radioplay Music label) ........ artists featured included Thelma Houston & Jerry Butler, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Jnr. Walker, Jimmy Ruffin, High Inergy, 4 Tops, Shorty Long, Gladys Knight, Impact of Brass .......... one of these albums was even titled 'Keep The Faith'.

Geoff is still around, think he distributes wine now for a living, remember going back to the days of the shop, 1982 I think it was when he was selling those cut outs, Ralph Graham, Walter Heath, Dells, New Birth etc, I got loads and during the course of time gave loads away to the extent that when I went to dig Ralph Graham out I found that I had given them all away and not kept one gutted

Think these were bootlegs pressed for the Japanese deep & sweet soul market. Dave Porter has stated that 32 LP's were pressed in the series

These are pretty odd too, I believe they originate from Holland and were pressed for the Surinamese scene there, they are a mixture of deep, southern and surinamese soul. Never seen a volume 2 of any of them and the covers are all dodgy as hell

I suppose you see allot of comps made for various scenes dont you, remember ZYX records in Germany re issued all sorts of soul/funk/groove stuff for the House scene, and wider sales if they could get them.. but these are quite perplexing, only label I know thats near these would be the Rare Grooves For The Dance Floor series, dunno... I'd love to hear them though..

Not all soul, but it includes the Impressions "Love is a mystery" (its only appearance on vinyl, I believe), the Sapphires "Why don't you let yourself go" (same as Mary Wells, not on 45 as far as I can see) and tracks by the Tams, Steve Alaimo and Fats Domino, plus some horrors.

The Bill Lee is a total novelty record, which is kinda interesting (especially for me). I used it as an intriguing opener on my radio show once, otherwise, I don't think I'd ever play it again ;)

 

And The Bangers 'I want to bang your box' is nice enough....but seek out a version by Lorenzo Manley....proper r&b dancefloor mayhem kinduva cut.

UK EMI released a similar compilation on Stateside in 1986 titled 'One Minit At A Time' 

AND ... in Germany EMI put out 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind' in 1981 on Capitol that included old Minit, Capitol, Liberty, Imperial & United Artists tracks.

MIND YOU, we've mentioned loads of great soul comp series so far but failed to mention the really good 'This Is Loma' series. 

..back in the mid 80's i found 2 LP's in a local library in Lambeth, S London. One was an R&B album containing excello blues tracks..i'd always liked blues but was surprised to hear a track called 'voodoo working'..i thought it sounded more northern soul..the other was more rockabilly but contained a midtempo very soulful sounding track..something to do with shoes,or walking..of course years later i heard the Charles Sheffield track was a current biggie...

Great album, Dave, we've discussed it on here before.

Sales of 'Soul Deep' Vol 2 were disappointing, it wasn't well promoted or widely circulated, maybe because it was released shortly before Contempo folded.

I had a test pressing but it wasn't easy to find a regular copy in UK stores.

One of my favourite LP's ,actually got my copy from a paper shop , and got a test pressing also now .The first volume is great as well ,and took me years to find one .
